Luckily, researchers at the University f Technlgy (UT) in Lima, Peru heard abut their prblem and fund a wnderful slutin. They made a lamp that can be pwered by plants and sil, bth f which can be easily fund in the Amaznian rainfrest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy frm a plant grwing in a wden bx and uses it t light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sund amazing and even impssible, the science behind the ides is quite simple. As plants create
their fd (using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals frm the sil), they als prduce waste which they return t the sil. Tiny animals in the sil eat this waste and they prduce electrns – the building blcks f electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the sil t capture the energy and keep it in the lamp’s batteries fr later use. The
researchers say a single charge can pwer a 50-watt Led light fr tw hurs - enugh time fr lcal villagers t get their evening wrk dne.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps t the villagers f Nuev Sapsa in Octber 2015. S far, they have been a huge success! But Miss Bailey lked past us all. “Will yu park it fr me?” she asked. We lked back t see wh it was and were surprised t see it was twards Shankar. “I dn’t think s, Miss Bailey!” stammered (结结巴巴地说) Shankar. “Why! it up!” said the teacher with a smile.
With that she gave her cycle t Shankar and didn’t lk t see hw he’d manage. Pretending she had cnfidence in his abilities, Miss Bailey turned and walked t class. We watched Shankar as he held her bike, we held ur breath as we thught it was ging t fall. Dines rushed t help. “Leave it!” Shankar said, and we all stpped. It seemed that his hump (驼背) disappeared as he drew himself up t his full height, and then with grwing cnfidence, he pushed Miss Bailey’s cycle t the parking lt. The schl bell rang, and we rushed t class. Shankar was the last t enter, but we were surprised; it was a different by wh walked in.

16、 Science has a lt f uses. It can uncver laws f nature, cure diseases, make bmbs, and help bridges t
stand up. Indeed science is s gd at what it des that there’s always a temptatin(诱惑) t drag it int prblems where it may nt be helpful. David Brks, authr f The Scial Animal: The Hidden Surces f Lve, Character, and Achievement, appears t be the latest in a lng line f writers wh have failed t g against the temptatin.
Brks gained fame fr several bks. His latest bk The Scial Animal, hwever, is mre ambitius and serius than his earlier bks. It is an attempt t deal with a set f weighty tpics. The bk fcuses n big questins: What has science uncvered abut human nature? What are the surces f character? And why are sme peple happy and successful while thers aren’t?
T answer these questins, Brks studies a wide range f disciplines (学科) . Cnsidering this, yu might expect the bk t be a simple descriptin f facts. But Brks has frmed his bk in an unusual, and perhaps unfrtunate way. Instead f intrducing scientific theries, he tells a stry, within which he tries t make his pints, perhaps in rder
t keep the reader’s attentin. S as Harld and Erica, the her and herine in his stry, live thrugh childhd, we hear
abut the science f child develpment and as they begin t date we hear abut the thery f sexual attractin. Brks carries this thrugh t the death f ne f his characters.
On the whle, Brks’ stry is acceptable if uninspired. As ne wuld expect, his writing is mstly clear and, t be fair, sme chapters stand ut abve the rest. I enjyed, fr instance, the chapter in which Harld discvers hw t think n his wn. While Harld and Erica are certainly nt strng r memrable characters, the mre serius prblems
with The Scial Animal lie elsewhere. These prblems partly invlve Brks’ attempt t translate his tale int science.
1 .The authr mentins the functins f science at the beginning f the passage t__________.
A .explain where science can be applied
B .shw the value f Brks’ new bk
C .remind the reader f the imprtance f science
D .explain why many writers use science in their wrks
2 .Accrding t the authr, which f the fllwing culd be a strength f the bk?
A .Its strng basis. B .Its clear writing.
C .Its cnvincing pints. D .Its memrable characters.
3 .What is the authr’s general attitude twards the bk?
A .Cntradictry. B .Supprtive. C .Cautius. D .Critical.
4 .What is the authr likely t write abut after the last paragraph?
A .Death f the characters. B .Brks’ life experience.
C .Prblems with the bk. D .Brks’ translatin skills. E

Hugh Herr, at MIT's Bimechatrnics Grup, cnsiders very pwerful weapns as cncern ver the future. Anther is the grwing rle f technlgy in ur lives."Machines’ taking ver what humans d is nt a gd thing," Herr says.
