The first essay I wrte fr my histry f English class was perfect, at least frm my perspective. I had wrked n it cnstantly and culdn’t wait t get my grade back. I handed it in with pride.
Tw weeks later, I received my grade: a D. The pages were cvered in red writing, pinting ut errrs. There must have been a mistake.

But I never stpped wndering what university wuld have been like. I was in my 40s when I sent in my applicatin and as a part-time student, I will be in my 60s befre I’m finished. That’s my gal.
What’s it like t be the ld guy in a class full f 20-year-lds? It’s strange. They pretty much ignred me, and I ignred them. They als ignred each ther. Hwever, after we had mre grup wrk tgether, peple started t cmmunicate. Althugh I was an English majr, sme f my favrite classes were unrelated electives. Curses in art histry and Greek and Rman histry were fascinating. I was eager t d well.

New research finds a link between pverty and pr decisin making. The findings may explain why pr peple smetimes make bad chices that cntinue their hardship.
Earlier studies have fund the pr less likely t escape pverty. But there has been little research n why the pr make decisins that make their lives harder. Until recently, Eldar Shafir, a psychlgist and his team did tw experiments. One tk place at a shpping center in New Jersey. The ther was carried ut amng sugar cane (甘蔗) farmers in rural India.
The New Jersey experiment invlved individuals with lw paying jbs and thers belnged t the middle class. All the vlunteers were asked what they wuld d if their cars needed repairing.
The vlunteers were given tw imaginary situatins. In the first, the car repair cst $150. In the secnd, $1,500.
“In the first, the pr and the rich perfrmed equally well.”
“And when the repair cst $1,500, the pr perfrmed significantly wrse.” The pr lst abut 13 IQ pints n average. This is abut the lss experienced when a persn has nt slept fr ne night.
The scientists then wndered if the same persn reacted differently when he was rich and when he was pr. Once a year when the harvest cmes in, the India sugar cane farmers earn mst f their mney, which ften des nt last thrugh the year.
“S they find themselves basically rich after the harvest when the incme cmes in and pr just befre the harvest.”
The researchers gave them tests similar t the nes taken by the peple in New Jersey. They tested the Indian farmers befre the harvest and after.
And the results were much the same as with the mall shppers.
“They perfrmed much mre slwly and made many mre mistakes when they were pr than when they were rich.”
Mr. Shafir says the results supprt 50 years f research that shws all humans have limited mental pwer t deal with things in life.
“And s the insight here is that, having nt enugh f smething in a way makes it harder t make gd decisins fr everything else.”
