Heik With, a seismlgist (地震学家) at the German Research Centre fr Gesciences (GMZ), nted that the public ften cntacts the GMZ after strng earthquakes, and that peple cmmnly ask “whether we can predict earthquakes r nt, because there are s many reprts n the Internet that an animal culd d it.”
Accrding t a new analysis f several ther published studies (called a meta-analysis), it’s hard t say. With and his clleagues evaluated mre than 700 published reprts f unusual behavir amng 130 species, including insects, birds, fish and mammals (mstly cats, dgs and cattle) frm 160 earthquakes. The recrds included all kinds f behavirs, including a tiger that reprtedly gt depressed befre an earthquake.
The researchers fund that 90 percent f all reprted cases happened within 62 miles (100 kilmeters) f the epicenter (震中)and within 60 days f an earthquake. Then, they examined when and where freshcks (前震) had happened in the regin. “The space-time pattern f animal precursrs (前兆) and freshcks is strikingly similar,” With said. “Frm this, we cncluded that the abnrmal animal behavir might simply be related t freshcks.” Very likely, nt every abnrmal animal behavir is related t an upcming earthquake. Instead, it’s likely that these animals are reacting t freshcks rather than predicting the earthquake itself.
“Despite the vast number f empirical research, gd infrmatin was little and scientific evidence is lacking. A majr surprise fr us was that the large majrity f the published claims were built n pr bservatinal data meaning mst peple did nt prperly bserve the animals befre, during and after the earthquake, which did nt stand as statistical scientific prf,” With said. “S, given that there’s n evidence yet shwing that animals can predict quakes, peple shuld call these claims int questin.”
T better study whether animals can predict earthquakes, With and his clleagues suggested that researchers ask a number f yes-r-n questins in any upcming experiments, including “Is the experimental setup and mnitring prcedure clearly described and reprducible?” and “Is it prven that the animal behavir is really unusual?”
Meanwhile, humans are wrking n technlgies that can detect earthquakes secnds befre they hit. Fr instance, a smartphne applicatin called Quake Alert helped warn peple in Ls Angeles that an earthquake was cming abut half a minute befre it struck n April 5, 2018. Hpefully, we will have reliable devices t tell peple that the earthquake is cming.

The artificial-intelligence chatbt ChatGPT has shaken educatrs since its Nvember release. New Yrk City public schls have banned it frm their netwrks and schl devices. There is, perhaps surprisingly, ne subject area that desn’t seem threatened, It turns ut ChatGPT is quite bad at maths.
“I’m nt hearing maths instructrs express cncern abut ChatGPT,” said Paul vn Hippel, a prfessr at the University f Texas wh studies data science and statistics. “I’m nt sure it’s useful fr maths at all, which feels strange because maths was the first-use case fr the artificial-intelligence devices.”
ChatGPT’s struggle with maths is inherent in this type f AI, knwn as a large language mdel. It scans a large amunt f text frm acrss the web and develps a mdel that might be extremely effective fr writing grammatically crrect respnses t essay requirement, but nt fr slving a maths prblem.
In an email, I asked Debarghya Das, a search-engine engineer, why ChatGPT gets sme simple questins right but thers cmpletely wrng. “Maybe the right analgy (类比) is if yu ask a rm f peple, wh have n idea what maths is but have read many hierglyphics (象形文字), ‘What cmes after 2+2,’ they might say, ‘Usually, we see a 4,’ That’s what ChatGPT is ding.” But, he adds, “Maths isn’t just a series f hierglyphics. It’s the prcess f calculating.”
It isn’t great fr pretending yu knw it thrugh a maths class because yu nly recgnize the mistakes if yu knw the maths. Anther reasn that maths instructrs are less anxius abut this innvatin is that they have been here befre. The field was upended fr the first time decades ag with the general availability f cmputers and calculatrs.
“Maths has had the biggest revlutin based n machinery f any mainstream subject,” said Cnrad Wlfram, the strategic directr f Wlfram Research. “In the real wrld, since cmputers came alng, have maths, science and engineering gtten cnceptually simpler? N, cmpletely the ppsite. We’re asking harder and harder questins, ging up a level.”
Eventually, AI will prbably get t the pint where its maths answers are nt nly cnfident but crrect. A pure large language mdel might nt be up fr the jb, but the technlgy will imprve. In general, hwever, AI, like cmputers, will likely ultimately be mst useful fr thse wh already knw a field well. They knw the questins t ask, hw t identify the shrtcmings and what t d with the answer. A tl, in ther wrds, is fr thse wh knw the mst maths, nt the least.
41. What des the underlined wrd “inherent” in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
A. Stable.B. Practical.C. Limited.D. Natural.
42. What can we knw frm Debarghya’s reply?
A. Calculating requires sme knwledge f hierglyphics.
B. ChatGPT is gd at slving mathematical questins by analgy.
C. Reading hierglyphics prevents ChatGPT slving maths questins.
D. ChatGPT’s respnse is based n language mdels instead f calculatins.
43. What can be inferred frm maths instructrs’ calmness abut ChatGPT?
A. ChatGPT is useful t identify maths mistakes.
B. Technical revlutin made maths easier t understand.
C. New technlgy will end up pushing the bundaries f maths.
D. ChatGPT has been banned frm netwrks and schl devices.
44. As fr AI, which wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A. It will play the largest rle fr prfessinals in a field.
B. It will becme cnfident t slve all the maths prblems.
C. It will turn the maths field ver again just like cmputers.
D. It will take the jbs frm humans as the technlgy imprves.
D 42. D 43. C 44. A

根据第三段首句“ChatGPT’s struggle with maths is inherent in this type f AI, knwn as a large language mdel. (这种作为大型语言模型而著名的人工智能,ChatGPT在数学上的挣扎是 。)”和“but nt fr slving a maths prblem(但不能解决数学问题)”可知,ChatGPT是属于大型语言模型的人工智能,是语言类的,不能解决数学问题,所以它在数学上的挣扎是自然的,与生俱来的。故划线词应为“自然的,与生俱来的”词义。故选D。
【42题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中““Maybe the right analgy (类比) is if yu ask a rm f peple, wh have n idea what maths is but have read many hierglyphics (象形文字), ‘What cmes after 2+2,’ they might say, ‘Usually, we see a 4,’ That’s what ChatGPT is ding.” But, he adds, “Maths isn’t just a series f hierglyphics. It’s the prcess f calculating.”
根据第五段最后两句“Anther reasn that maths instructrs are less anxius abut this innvatin is that they have been here befre. The field was upended fr the first time decades ag with the general availability f cmputers and calculatrs. (数学教师对这种创新不那么焦虑的另一个原因是,他们以前也遇到过这种情况。几十年前,随着计算机和计算器的普及,这个领域第一次被颠覆了。)”和第六段最后三句“ “In the real wrld, since cmputers came alng, have maths, science and engineering gtten cnceptually simpler? N, cmpletely the ppsite. We’re asking harder and harder questins, ging up a level.” (“在现实世界中,自从计算机出现以来,数学、科学和工程在概念上变得更简单了吗?”不,完全相反。我们会问越来越难的问题,上了一个水平。”)”可知,数学老师对ChatGPT很镇静的原因是几十年前,随着计算机和计算器的普及,这个领域第一次被颠覆了,最终导致数学问题越来越难,数学边界也更上了一个水平,可得出新技术最终将推动数学的极限。故选C。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据末段中“In general, hwever, AI, like cmputers, will likely ultimately be mst useful fr thse wh already knw a field well. (然而,总的来说,像计算机一样,人工智能最终可能对那些已经非常了解一个领域的人最有用。)”可知,作者认为人工智能将在一个领域的专业人士中发挥最大的作用。故选A。

根据前文的“ In mst instances, digital fd rdering can be dne directly with a restaurant app r third party fd service. ”(在大多数情况下,数字订餐可以直接通过餐厅应用程序或第三方订餐服务完成。)可知,此处讲述的是数字订餐的给生活带来的便利和好处。A选项“Then peple can get access t lcal restaurants and menus mre easily.”(这样人们就可以更容易地获得当地的餐馆和菜单。) 故选A。
根据后文的“Because the speedy delivery drivers, with desserts, milkshakes and burgers, can just arrive directly at ur dr. ”(因为快速送货的司机,带着甜点、奶昔和汉堡,可以直接送到我们家门口。)可知,快速的送货司机,不仅速度快,而且还能配送甜点、奶昔和汉堡等快餐食品。D选项“At first it was fun t be able t rder nt just fast fd, but even faster fd.”(一开始,不仅可以点快餐,还可以点更快的快餐食物,这很有趣。)中的faster fd对应下文的desserts, milkshakes and burgers。 “At first”与下文的“even better”呼应。故选D。
根据下文的“The fd we are rdering cntains mre sugar, fat and salt than fd made at hme. And being able t eat frm the cmfrt f the sfa, r even smetimes frm under the blanket, means we aren't even burning calries when we g t pick the fd up. ”(我们点的食物比家里做的食物含有更多的糖、脂肪和盐。而且能够在舒适的沙发上吃东西,有时甚至在毯子下吃东西,意味着我们去拿食物的时候甚至不会燃烧卡路里。)可知,通过电子点餐即小程序点餐给我们带来便利的同时,却也让我们吃到了更多的含糖、脂肪和盐的食物,同时窝在沙发上吃东西,减少了我们的运动。F选项“These apps, n the ther hand, are encuraging vereating and physical inactivity.”(另一方面,这些应用程序正在鼓励暴饮暴食和缺乏运动。)
根据前文的“The fd sizes are ften bigger t. ”(食物的尺寸通常也更大。)可知,食物的尺寸更大言外之意,就是人们要比正常情况下买的食物要更多。C选项“That means peple are cnsuming much mre than they nrmally wuld.”(这意味着人们的消费比正常情况下要多得多。)
根据前文的“As a result, we need t be reminded f the imprtance f cking fr urselves.”(因此,我们需要提醒自己做饭的重要性。) G选项“And with the cst-f-living crisis many families are facing, it’s certainly a cheaper ptin.”(随着许多家庭面临的生活成本危机,这当然是一个更便宜的选择。)

Cmputers, smartphnes, and audi players are an essential part f students’ everyday lives. That means that whenever students are ding hmewrk, they are ging t be faced with the prblem f using their devices fr purpses ther than learning. Instead f cncentrating n ne task, they are perfrming multiple tasks.
Accrding t the research by Larry Rsen, published in the jurnal Cmputers in Human Science, students spend up t 45% f their hmewrk time n varius tasks unrelated t their studies. Students ften get distracted by their phnes r use their laptps fr unauthrized (未经许可的) activities. Often, students think that they are able t multitask effectively, withut sacrificing their studies. Hwever, the research shws that it is true in nly 5% f all cases.
But why d teenagers multitask? The answer is simple: multitasking makes us feel gd. As the research indicates, the entertainment gained frm secndary activities during studies makes learners feel better emtinally.
Watching TV r talking t yur friends by email is pleasant and helps students fight bredm while ding hmewrk r listening t a lecture they find bring. Anther reasn why students multitask is that they simply d nt see the negative impact it has n their cursewrk. Teenagers ften verrate their abilities. The seemingly tiny distractins, hwever, result in a cnstant need t switch fcus and srt ut infrmatin, injuring the brain by veruse and making the prcess inefficient.
Hwever, the effects f multitasking are nt entirely negative. The research cnducted by HKU indicates that peple wh rutinely multitask are able t use their senses in cnjunctin (结合) mre easily. Other research als shws that multitasking has a psitive effect n the ability t pass judgment and slve prblems quickly and efficiently.

50. Students spend up t 45% f their hmewrk time n varius tasks unrelated t their studies, with few knwing that this is at the expense f their wn studies.
51. Because multitasking makes them feel gd. Besides, they are nt aware f the negative impact it has n their cursewrk.
52. Multitasking, which injures the brain by veruse and makes the learning prcess inefficient, has n psitive effects n students. Accrding t this passage, the effects f multitasking are nt entirely negative.
53. When ding hmewrk, I will nt chse multitasking. Because multitasking will make it difficult fr me t cncentrate n what I am ding, which prevents me frm efficiently cmpleting my hmewrk within the time limit.
根据第二段“Accrding t the research by Larry Rsen, published in the jurnal Cmputers in Human Science, students spend up t 45% f their hmewrk time n varius tasks unrelated t their studies. Students ften get distracted by their phnes r use their laptps fr unauthrized (未经许可的) activities. Often, students think that they are able t multitask effectively, withut sacrificing their studies. Hwever, the research shws that it is true in nly 5% f all cases.(根据拉里·罗森发表在《计算机与人文科学》杂志上的研究,学生将高达45%的家庭作业时间花在与学习无关的各种任务上。学生们经常被手机分散注意力,或者使用笔记本电脑进行未经授权的活动。通常,学生们认为他们能够在不牺牲学业的情况下有效地处理多项任务。然而,研究表明,只有5%例子是这样的)”可知, Larry Rsen的研究告诉我们,学生将高达45%的家庭作业时间花在与学习无关的任务上,却几乎不知道这是以牺牲自己的学业为代价。故答案为:Students spend up t 45% f their hmewrk time n varius tasks unrelated t their studies, with few knwing that this is at the expense f their wn studies.
根据第三段的“But why d teenagers multitask? The answer is simple: multitasking makes us feel gd. (但为什么青少年要同时处理多项任务呢?答案很简单:多任务处理让我们感觉良好)”和第四段的“ Anther reasn why students multitask is that they simply d nt see the negative impact it has n their cursewrk. (学生多任务处理的另一个原因是,他们根本看不到这对他们的课程有负面影响)”可知,青少年选择多任务是因为多任务处理让他们感觉良好,并且他们意识不到这对他们的课程有负面影响。故答案为:Because multitasking makes them feel gd. Besides, they are nt aware f the negative impact it has n their cursewrk.
根据倒数第二段的“The seemingly tiny distractins, hwever, result in a cnstant need t switch fcus and srt ut infrmatin, injuring the brain by veruse and making the prcess inefficient.(然而,看似微小的分心会导致人们不断需要转换注意力和整理信息,过度使用会伤害大脑,使这一过程效率低下)”和倒数第三段的“Hwever, the effects f multitasking are nt entirely negative.(然而,多任务处理的影响并不完全是负面的)”可知,虽然过度使用会伤害大脑以及让学习过程效率低下,但多任务处理的影响并非全是负面的。因此错误的部分是has n psitive effects n students.。 Multitasking, which injures the brain by veruse and makes the learning prcess inefficient, has n psitive effects n students. Accrding t this passage, the effects f multitasking are nt entirely negative.
When ding hmewrk, I will nt chse multitasking. Because multitasking will make it difficult fr me t cncentrate n what I am ding, which prevents me frm efficiently cmpleting my hmewrk within the time limit.
