Ms. Jennings walked ver t us. I intrduced my teacher t my family and explained that my parents are deaf.
“It’s nice t meet yu.” Mm said, signing.
Sme f my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I nticed Evelyn and her mm standing by the dr.
    “Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said suddenly.
    I turned arund, “Hi.”

Evelyn ndded. “It’s like a secret cde. Wuld yu teach me sme wrds smetime?”
    I smiled. “Of curse.”
Then I gt my parents’ attentin. “Mm, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like yu t meet my friend Evelyn and her mm.”

Sme time ag, I came t realize that I wasn’t imprving much at the things I cared mst abut even thugh I put in a lt f effrt. Thrugh talking t thers and ding sme research, I fund this stagnatin (停滞) is actually quite cmmn and that the mst effective peple and teams in any field d smething we can all emulate (模仿). They g thrugh life back and frth between tw znes (区域): the learning zne and the perfrmance zne.
In the learning zne, ur fcus (焦点) is n getting better. We try new things and practice things we’re nt quite perfect at yet. Making mistakes is expected, even welcmed, because that’s hw we learn and grw. This is different frm the perfrmance zne. When we’re perfrming, we want t d ur best. We fcus n the skills we’ve already mastered and try t reduce mistakes.
The reasn many f us dn’t imprve much despite ur hard wrk is that we tend t spend almst all f ur time in the perfrmance zne. This gets in the way f ur grwth ver the lng term, als ur perfrmance. S what des the learning zne lk like? Let’s take Demsthenes as an example. He was a plitical leader and the greatest lawyer in ancient Greece. T becme great, he didn’t spend all his time just being a lawyer, which wuld be his perfrmance zne. But instead, he did activities designed fr imprvement. He studied law with guidance frm mentrs, but he als realized that being a lawyer invlved persuading (说服) ther peple, s he als studied great speeches and acting. And since curts at the time were very nisy, he als practiced by the cean, prjecting his vice abve the rar f the waves. It is this type f practice in the learning zne that leads t real imprvement, nt just time n task perfrming.
Nw, this is nt t say that the perfrmance zne has n value. It very much des. Being in the perfrmance zne allws us t get things dne as best as we can. It can als be mtivating, and it prvides us with infrmatin t knw what t fcus n next when we g back t the learning zne.
S the way t high perfrmance is t alternate between the learning zne and the perfrmance zne, purpsefully building ur skills in the learning zne, then applying (应用) thse skills in the perfrmance zne. This way, we keep getting better and better. Remember, it’s imprtant t knw when t fcus n learning and when t fcus n perfrming. While we need bth, the mre time we spend in the learning zne, the mre we’ll imprve.
27.Yu are prbably in the learning zne when yu ________.
A.try t learn new things fr imprvement
B.practice things yu’re perfect at already
C.try yur best t avid making mistakes
D.fcus n the skills yu have mastered
28.Why des the writer talk abut Demsthenes in Paragraph 3?
A.T explain why many f us dn’t imprve much.
B.T suggest sme ways f changing learning habits.
C.T stress the imprtance f being in the learning zne.
D.T shw hw peple imprve skills in the learning zne.
29.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A.Wrking Hard Helps Make Imprvement
B.The Real Value f Learning and Perfrming
C.The Way t Get Better at Things Yu Care abut
D.Fcusing n Skills Develpment Helps Yu Grw
If yu are n a bus r train, yu’ve prbably nticed that mst peple spend the ride lking at their cell phnes. N dubt, they think ding nthing but sit there wuld be bring, s they prefer distracting themselves. This squares (一致) with past research shwing peple will d almst anything t avid bredm.
But results frm new research suggest we shuld rethink that chice. We are prbably underestimating (低估) hw enjyable and interesting it is t d nthing but pay attentin t wherever ur thughts take us.
In a series f experiments, researchers brught Japanese university students int a lab and tld them that they wuld sn g int a rm withut their belngings t wait and d nthing but sit fr 20 minutes. While waiting, they culd think abut anything, but were nt allwed t sleep, walk, r exercise; lk at a smartphne; r check a watch. Befre entering the rm, they were asked t predict hw much they’d enjy waiting and thinking, hw interesting r bring it wuld be, and hw much it wuld engage them s that they wuld lse themselves in it and frget the time. Then, they went in the rm t wait. Afterward, they reprted hw waiting actually felt—hw engaging, pleasurable, interesting, r bring it was. In sme variatins f the experiment, they waited in a dark rm withut any stimulatin (刺激). Either way, researchers fund that the participants (参与者) were nt gd at predicting hw much they’d enjy ding nthing but think. Even in a dark rm with n stimulatin, they ended up being mre engaged and interested than they’d expected.
“Peple dn’t recgnize the real value f waiting/thinking,” says researcher Ku Murayama f the Mtivatin Science Lab at the University f Tübingen in Germany and cauthr f the study. “Once they engage in it, thugh, they appreciate it.” Spntaneus (自发的) thinking ften invlves mind-wandering, daydreaming, thinking abut the future, r recllecting memries, all f which can have upsides. Fr example, daydreaming and mind-wandering have been fund t imprve ur md, creativity, gal-setting, and jb perfrmance.
Thugh it’s hard t knw if these results with students wuld apply (适用) t the rest f us, Murayama did at least cmpare German students t Japanese students and fund bth grups underestimated the pleasure f waiting t a similar degree. This suggests that it’s nt necessarily a culturally-driven phenmenn (现象), thugh mre research wuld need t be dne t check that.
Overall, says Murayama, the results suggest we rethink whipping ut ur cell phnes every time we are waiting r bred. Instead, we might benefit frm having a mment t think freely abut whatever catches ur fancy—and enjy urselves just as much.
30.What can we learn frm the experiments mentined in the passage?
A.Participants culd sleep when they stayed in the lab.
B.Participants felt mre interested than they had expected.
C.Participants culd enter the dark rm with their watches.
D.Participants predicted they wuld enjy waiting and thinking.
31.The wrd “engage” in Paragraph 3 prbably means “________”.
    A.upsetB.surpriseC.cnfuseD.attract
32.What des Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
A.Mre studies are needed t supprt the findings.
B.Bth Germans and Japanese undervalued the pleasure f waiting
C.Underestimating the pleasure f waiting may nt be related t culture.
D.The study results with students wuld be able t apply t the rest f us.
33.What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
A.T present the results f new research.
    B.T intrduce a culturally-driven phenmenn.
C.T discuss the true meaning f waiting and thinking.
D.T advise us t think freely when we have nthing t d.
Hw Audibks Help Readers and Inspire a Lve f Bks
Nt lng ag, ne f my third graders Jack was struggling (挣扎) t find bks he liked. His teacher reprted that he kept chsing bks that were t simple r t difficult fr him t manage n his wn.
I visited with Jack ne mrning t find ut what he was lking fr. He started telling me that he just didn’t like t read, but after a bit f cnversatin, he shared that he actually lved bks abut dragns.
I thught f the Dragn Masters series. I tk the first bk ff the shelf. When I pened the bk, there were pictures t help him understand the stry mre easily. He was excited. We sat dwn t read a bit tgether, but it quickly became clear that it was hard fr him t read. He was upset, but I tld him I had an idea.
We dwnladed Sra which is a reading app with audibks and searched fr an audibk f the first Dragn Masters bk. We printed it and picked up a bkmark t hld under each line as the narratr (讲述者) read s he culd fllw alng. Tw days later, he was back in the library happily. The last time I checked, he was nearing the end f the series.
I have advised teachers t use audibks with struggling readers. Hwever sme peple hld that audibks are nt a substitute (替代品) fr silent reading. I disagree. When a student struggles t decde (解码), the interest in reading disappears very quickly. Audibks can help students by allwing their jy f reading t increase as they cntinue t imprve their reading skills in class.
“If we give kids an audibk, wn’t that make them depend n them frever?” The answer is, I deeply dubt it. When we used training wheels, they didn’t prevent us frm learning hw t ride a bike. They prvided supprt as we gt cnfidence, and we learned t let them g and ride ff int the sunset at the end f the street. If a student is enjying audibks as part f their learning, the student will be a real reader when wrking with teachers t increase cnfidence in written text.
