Wang Fang, a Suzhu native, has given her heart and sul t Kunqu Opera. Wang, wh has twice wn the Plum Perfrmance Award—China’s tp award fr theater and pera perfrmances—started t learn the traditinal art frm in 1977.
Brn with a meldic vice, Wang lved t sing and dance when she was little. She perfrmed quite ften, and was admitted int the Suzhu Kunqu Opera Trupe （剧团） when she was in middle schl. As Mathias describes, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a ttal f 90 invented wrds ver fur days. While the test subjects first heard the new vcabulary, they were shwn a vide f a persn making a gesture that matched the meaning f the wrd. When the wrd was repeated, the subjects perfrmed the gesture themselves. Five mnths later, they were asked t translate the vcabulary they had learned int German. The researchers cncluded that the mtr crtex cntributed t the translatin f the vcabulary learned with gestures. Anther research grup led by Leipzig had yung adults and eight-year-ld children listen t new vcabulary fr five days, paired with matching pictures r vides f gestures. After tw mnths, the tw methds were still tied. But after six mnths, the adults benefited mre frm the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by bth.
But it is nt nly the mtr crtex itself that prmtes learning. The meaning expressed by the gesture als figures in, “I think we underuse gesture in ur classrms,” Gldin-Meadw says. “Gd teachers and gd listeners use it, but nt always in a systematic way. Wang Fang, a Suzhu native, has given her heart and sul t Kunqu Opera. Wang, wh has twice wn the Plum Perfrmance Award—China’s tp award fr theater and pera perfrmances—started t learn the traditinal art frm in 1977.
Brn with a meldic vice, Wang lved t sing and dance when she was little. She perfrmed quite ften, and was admitted int the Suzhu Kunqu Opera Trupe （剧团） when she was in middle schl.
