Nightmare disrder is characterized by frequent nightmares that cause unhappiness and greatly impact ur life. But a new apprach is added t existing therapy (疗法) by intrducing certain sunds which can help a persn t turn their nightmare int a sweet dream.
The existing therapy, called Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT), is already used as a way t reduce the frequency and intensity f nightmares. “Yu write dwn the bad dream in a very detailed way and then create new endings that are nnfrightening fr nightmares,” said Dr. Kilkenny, the directr f the Institute f Sleep Medicine at Staten Island University Hspital.
In this newly published study, the 36 participants were divided int 2 equal-sized grups. Bth grups practiced IRT, but the secnd grup additinally used Targeted Memry Reactivatin (TMR). TMR wrks by assciating the stimulatin (刺激) f a specific sund with a specific thught while yu’re awake. The daily practice saw them cmpleting IRT with added TMR. The 36 participants were then recrded fr 2 weeks as they slept.
Frtunately fr the dreamers, bth grups saw an imprvement in their sleep and a drp in nightmare frequency. Hwever, the grup wh had received the cmbinatin f IRT and TMR saw a drp in nightmare frequency that lasted fr three mnths beynd the study—and even began t experience mre jyful dreams instead f nightmares. “The study shws again that IRT alne wrks t imprve nightmare disrder, but the new change is that the additin f TMR t IRT nt nly imprves nightmare disrder but als increases the amunt f psitive dream experiences,” said Kilkenny.
While the results f this study are encuraging, it might be difficult t carry ut them n yur wn. “If yu’re experiencing frequent r serius nightmares, it may be helpful t first address yur sleeping habits and make sure yur are getting enugh sleep with regular sleep and wake times,” said Dr. Dimitriu, the funder f Menl Sleep Medicine in Califrnia.
