In this bk, Minter fully reveals himself as an investigative jurnalist. He desn’t shy away frm the cmmnly accepted assumptins abut the glbal trade in used gds. First, Minter questins the idea that shipments f secndhand clthes frm develped cuntries t Africa have destryed lcal textile industries (纺织业). That’s verly simplistic, he says. As teens spend mre time nline, there is an ld challenge that has taken n a new frm: cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is in sme ways wrse than traditinal bullying because the attacks can live frever n the internet and can reach a much brader audience. And it’s especially urgent t address at a time when teen mental health has already taken such a hit.
But there’s sme encuraging news frm a new study suggesting that nurturing gratitude in students culd reduce this nline abuse.
The study included almst 500 11-t-17-year-lds frm three different schls in Spain. The students participated in either a fur-week gratitude prgram, a fur-week cyberbullying educatin prgram, r neither.
Acrss the fur ne-hur sessins in the gratitude prgram, the students learned abut gratitude, practiced thrugh activities, and rle-played scenaris using gratitude t reduce the risk and harm f cyberbullying. Fr example, teens were asked t think abut a difficult experience related t cyberbullying and then think abut smene wh helped them in ne way r anther thrugh that experience.
The cyberbullying educatin prgram invlved discussins abut what cyberbullying is, hw it is different frm traditinal bullying, and hw the students might be able t prevent r take actin during a cyberbullying incident.
All the students tk a survey at the beginning and end f their prgram, as well as three mnths afterward, which asked them hw much they had engaged in cyberbullying in the recent past, including calling smene names via text r nline messages and spreading rumrs abut smene n the internet.
The result suggests that learning abut and practicing gratitude may have lasting impacts n an adlescent’s tendency t engage in cyberbullying — after nly fur hurs f lessns. The fact that a decrease in cyberbullying didn’t ccur right away fr gratitude, as it did with cyberbullying educatin, suggests that it may have taken time fr the yung peple t think abut and incrprate it int their lives. Many rbts track bjects by “sight” as they wrk with them, but ptical (光学的) sensrs can’t take in an item’s entire shape when it’s in the dark r partially blcked frm view. Nw a new lw-cst technique lets a rbtic hand “feel” an unfamiliar bject’s frm — and skillfully handle it based n this infrmatin alne.
University f Califrnia, San Dieg, rbticist Wang Xialng and his team wanted t find ut whether cmplex actins culd be achieved in rbtics using nly simple tuch data.
The researchers attached 16 cntact sensrs, each csting abut $12, t the palm and fingers f a fur-fingered rbt hand. These sensrs simply indicate if an bject is tuching the hand r nt. “While ne sensr desn’t catch much, a lt f them can help yu capture different aspects f the bject”, Wang says. In this case, the rbt’s task was t rtate (旋转) items placed in its palm.
They first ran simulatins (模拟) t cllect enugh tuch data as a virtual rbt hand practiced rtating bjects, including balls and ther irregular bjects. Using infrmatin frm each sensr, the team built a cmputer mdel that determines an bject’s psitin at every step f the handling prcess and mves the fingers t rtate it smthly and stably.
Next, they transferred this capability t perate a real rbt hand, which successfully cntrl previusly unfamiliar bjects such as apples, tmates, sup cans and rubber ducks. Transferring the cmputer mdel t the real wrld was relatively easy because the sensr data were s simple. Hwever, New Yrk University’s Lerrel Pint, wh studies rbts’ interactins, wnders whether the system wuld fail at mre cmplicated tasks.
S, in future wrk, Wang’s grup aims t tackle mre cmplex mvements as well as t add sensrs in places such as the sides f the fingers. “This means that there will be mre accurate infrmatin frm tuching that allws recnstructing the bject shape,” Wang says. The study included almst 500 11-t-17-year-lds frm three different schls in Spain. The students participated in either a fur-week gratitude prgram, a fur-week cyberbullying educatin prgram, r neither.
Acrss the fur ne-hur sessins in the gratitude prgram, the students learned abut gratitude, practiced thrugh activities, and rle-played scenaris using gratitude t reduce the risk and harm f cyberbullying. University f Califrnia, San Dieg, rbticist Wang Xialng and his team wanted t find ut whether cmplex actins culd be achieved in rbtics using nly simple tuch data.
The researchers attached 16 cntact sensrs, each csting abut $12, t the palm and fingers f a fur-fingered rbt hand. These sensrs simply indicate if an bject is tuching the hand r nt. “While ne sensr desn’t catch much, a lt f them can help yu capture different aspects f the bject”, Wang says. In this case, the rbt’s task was t rtate (旋转) items placed in its palm.
They first ran simulatins (模拟) t cllect enugh tuch data as a virtual rbt hand practiced rtating bjects, including balls and ther irregular bjects. Using infrmatin frm each sensr, the team built a cmputer mdel that determines an bject’s psitin at every step f the handling prcess and mves the fingers t rtate it smthly and stably.
Next, they transferred this capability t perate a real rbt hand, which successfully cntrl previusly unfamiliar bjects such as apples, tmates, sup cans and rubber ducks.
