D Encyclpedias Knw Everything?
Lng befre Wikipedia (维基百科) r Encyclpedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), there was Pliny the Elder. He was a first-century Rman researcher. His assistants read t him while he ate dinner and while he bathed. Pliny tk ntes. He even thught walking is a waste f time. His assistants carried him arund Rme in a chair while he read.
All f this was dne in preparatin fr his Histria Naturalis (《博物志》). The bk came ut in A.D.77. It is the ldest surviving (现存的) encyclpedia n Earth. There are 2,500 chapters. They cver everything frm mice t Mars.
“N Rman writer has cmpleted such a prject,” Pliny prudly declared. Unluckily, tw years after having published (出版) the encyclpedia, he died in a natural disaster.
Accidents can hardly be avided. Hwever, they can be recrded (记录). Editrs (编辑), like Pliny, rganize the knwledge f ur wrld. Like a valuable gift, the bks are passed dwn thrugh the ages. They begin their lives as a tl and end them as a histrical recrd.
Therefre, in my pinin, an encyclpedia is nt just a recrd f what its editrs knw, it’s als a recrd f what they dn’t knw.
Pliny was wrng when he said there were seven planets, including the Sun and the Mn. He was wrng, t, when he said Africans were black frm being burnt by the sun. After all, Histria Naturalis is a bk edited by a Rman thusands f years ag. It recrded all f the things he truly knew at the time.
Similarly, I believe bth Wikipedia and Encyclpedia Britannica have sme inaccurate (不准确的) infrmatin. Even the biggest encyclpedias nly shw what their editrs knw.
“The task f editing an encyclpedia can never be cmpleted,” said Rger Lewinter, an American researcher. Encyclpedias can’t recrd all f human knwledge but just sme f it. They are always waiting fr smene—yu, perhaps—t imprve them.

A.nbdy knew what Mars wasB.there was n encyclpedia n Earth
C.nbdy had cnsidered walking a waste f timeD.n Rman writer had cmpleted an encyclpedia
28.The underlined wrd “declared” (in Paragraph 3) means “________”.
A.madeB.saidC.createdD.laughed

A.imprve an encyclpedia
B.find all the mistakes in Histria Naturalis
C.cmplete the task f editing an encyclpedia
D.take a lk at the wrld’s biggest encyclpedia
