S far, the earthquake is reprted t have killed ver 2,900 peple. The earthquake was especially precarius as it happened at night, when mst peple were asleep at hme.
The center f the earthquake was in the Atlas Muntains, abut 72 kilmeters suthwest f Marrakesh, a large city ppular with turists in the center f Mrcc. Frtunately, many f its mdern buildings survived the earthquake. Hwever, the ld part f the city, called the Medina, whse buildings are ver 1,000 years ld, was hit hard, leaving many f thse buildings in ruins.
Outside f Marrakesh, the earthquake caused even mre damage, In the Atlas Muntains, the earthquake’s center, there were many small villages. Many peple in the area lived in simple huses made f mud, a traditinal way f building in Mrcc, But they’re nt strng enugh t survive earthquakes and many f these huses simply fell apart, turning int sand, The Mrccan gvernment has laws requiring buildings t be built mre safely. yet these rules were ften verlked.
In larger cities, rescue effrts seemed t be ging well, But it tk a lt lnger fr help t reach remte (偏远的) areas in the muntains, That meant the lcal peple in thse areas had t deal with the situatin n their wn. They had t dig thrugh the ruins with their hands, searching fr survivrs wh were trapped. Mrever, many peple were sleeping utside. unsure if their huses were safe enugh, Mre help was n the way. As newer, mre advanced technlgies cme ut, huge amunts f electrnics (电子产品) are thrwn away, instead f being reused. These gds ften end up in landfills, where the chemicals inside them may be a danger t the envirnment. Electrnics can cntain harmful materials. If these materials get int the grund r water, the pllutin can cause serius prblems, Mst electrnics require metals. These metals must be mined frm the Earth. Often the mining prcess creates serius pllutin.
A grup knwn as Waste Electrical and Electrnic Equipment (WEEE) Frum is trying t make peple mre aware f the prblems f e-waste. Recently, the WEEE Frum asked researchers frm the United Natins (UN) t study a kind f e-waste that’s ften nt nticed because peple dn’t cnsider the gds t be electrnics. The WEEE Frum calls this kind “unable-t-be-seen” e-waste.
The UN study shws that abut 1/6 f all e-waste is “unable-t-be-seen”. Thugh it’s “unable-t-be-seen”, it’s certainly nt a small amunt. The “unable-t-be-seen” e-waste weighs abut 9 billin kilgrams. The WEEE Frum says that if this e-waste were put int40-tn trucks and the trucks were then lined up, the line f trucks wuld be abut 5,630kilmeters lng.
The surprising kind leading the “unable-t-be-seen” e-waste grup was tys. Wrldwide, rughly 7.3 billin electrnic tys are thrwn away each year. These include gds like car racing sets, electric trains, and musical tys, They als include tys with electrnic parts, like dlls that speak r games with electrnic timers, In all. tys make up abut 35% f “unable-t-be-seen” e-waste. But the prblem is far larger than just tys, The reprt als shws that ther everyday gds like hme alarms, smke alarms. pwer tls, and cmputer cables (电缆) are als big surces f “unable-t-be-seen” e-waste.

Earthquakes are a natural disaster — except when they’re man-made. The il and gas industry has frcefully used the technique knwn as hydraulic fracturing (水力压裂) t destry sub-surface rck and free the il and gas hiding there. But the prcess results in large amunts f chemical-filled waste water. Hrizntal drilling (水平钻探) fr il can als prduce a large amunt f natural, unwanted salt water. The industry deals with this waste water by pumping it int deep wells.
Previusly, the US Gelgical Survey published fr the first time an earthquake disaster map cvering bth natural and “induced” quakes. The map and a reprt shwed that parts f the central United States were facing a grund-shaking disaster equal t the famusly unstable terrain (地形) f Califrnia.
Sme 7 millin peple lived in places easily attacked by these man-made quakes, and almst all the risk f increasing man-made quakes was tied t cmpanies that were pumping waste water frm il and gas prductin deep int the earth, the USGS reprted. The list f places at highest risk f man-made earthquakes included Oklahma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Clrad, New Mexic, Ohi and Alabama. Mst f these earthquakes were relatively small, in the range f magnitude 3, but sme were mre pwerful, including a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in 2011 in Oklahma that was cnnected t waste water filling.
Scientists said they did nt knw if there was an upper limit n the magnitude f man-made earthquakes; this was an area f active research. Oklahma had had prehistric earthquakes as pwerful as magnitude 7.
It’s nt immediately clear whether this research will change industry practices, r even whether it will surprise anyne in the areas f newly estimated danger. In Oklahma, fr example, the rate f earthquakes was nly ne r tw a year, but there have been hundreds since hydraulic fracturing and hrizntal drilling, with waste water filling, became cmmn in the last years.
32.What can cause man-made earthquakes?
A.The man-made waste water in the factries.
B.The prcess f digging deep wells in thse pr areas.
C.The il and gas industry’s wrk t harvest the il and gas.

A.Man-made.B.Reduced.C.Newly-built.D.Cntrlled.
34.What’s the highest magnitude f man-made earthquakes accrding t the scientists?
A.Magnitude 3.B.Magnitude 5.6.C.Magnitude 7.D.N cnclusin.
35.What is the best title fr the text?
A.Natural Earthquakes in America Are Disappearing Nw
B.Abut 7 Millin Americans at Risk f Man-Made Earthquakes
C.Time fr the Oil and Gas Industry t Change Its Wrking Practices
D.Earthquakes as Pwerful as Magnitude 7 Happen Mre Often in America
