We are all familiar with that little excitement frm creating a ppular pst n Facebk. Watching the number f likes can be bth attractive and addictive.
That same buzz(兴奋)can have its disadvantages, thugh. We all knw the feeling f watching ther peple’s psts get unending psitive feedback. We tell urselves that the nly reasn why these peple are getting attentin is that they’re ppular and gd-lking. We sink int self-lading(自我讨厌)and cmparisn. Therefre, after experimenting with hiding likes n Instagram in select cuntries, Facebk is explring ding the same n its main platfrm.
That Facebk is cnsidering this is encuraging. After years f appearing t ignre criticism abut
its effects n sciety, the cmpany finally seems t be listening. Hwever, there is a basic cnflict between Facebk’s business mdel and its new-fund altruism(利己主义). Relying n Facebk t lk after its users’ mental health is a bit like asking McDnald’s t keep its custmers’ bld pressure under cntrl: At sme pint, a cmpany’s need t make mney is nt in line with its suppsed desire t d gd.
The prblem with likes is that they mark ut hw successful r happy thers are, which in turn can prmte a feeling f envy and insecurity. It’s a real phenmenn. Hwever, Facebk wuld certainly want yu t pst things that get mre likes. The cmpany’s success relies upn yu psting mre and encuraging mre “engagement” frm ther peple s that the value f Facebk’s targeted ad business increases.
Facebk’s reliance n engagement is deep-rted, and it destrys a suppsed desire t prevent the platfrm frm encuraging envy. Withut dubt, hiding likes can have sme benefit, but the way Facebk is built means that this will always be a small step at best.
28. Why des Facebk try hiding likes n its main platfrm?
A. T catch mre users’ eyes.
B. T get invlved in an experiment.
C. T reduce users’ negative feelings.
D. T encurage users’ psting psitive things.
29. What can we infer frm the cmparisn between Facebk and McDnald’s?
A. Facebk shws less cncern fr users’ mental health.
B. Facebk fcuses mre n the users’ interests.
C. Facebk makes a health y prfit frm the users.
D. Facebk utperfrms McDnald’s in terms f service.
30. What des mre “engagement” mean t Facebk accrding t paragraph 4?
A. Mre users’ needs. B. The grwth f value.
C. The increases f desire. D. Mre users’ security.
31. What is the authr’s attitude twards Facebk’s hiding likes?
A. Negative. B. Psitive.

We are tld by Psychlgists that ur self-image defines what we believe we can and cannt d. Each f us ver the years has built up belief abut urselves: Uncnsciusly, ur pictures f wh we are have been frmed by past experiences. Our successes and failures, what thers have tld us and what we think peple believe abut us all help frm impressins f what we think we are. Because self-image is s imprtant in ur grwth, it is imprtant t examine ur cncepts f self in rder t reach ur full ptential.
Changing ur self-image is pssible: Sme psychlgists suggest we begin t change ur self-image by mentally picturing urselves perfrming well at sme task. Since we presently react t things based n ur present images, it’s suggested that we replace thse with better nes. In many experiments, peple were asked t sit quietly fr a few minutes each day and imagine themselves ding well. Fr instance, subjects wuld sit and imagine themselves thrwing darts at a bull’s-eye(靶心)n a target. Over a perid f weeks, their dart game imprved. This has been dne with peple wh wanted t play chess better, thrw a ball mre accurately, increase their salesmanship r musical talents, and imprve many ther skills. In mst cases, remarkable imprvement is made.
The pint f changing self-image is nt t develp an image f urselves that is nt real. T try t becme smething we really aren’t is just as wrng as living the unrealistic, inferir image we may have. The aim is t find the real self, t bring ur mental images f urselves in line with ur true ptential. Hwever, it is generally accepted amng psychlgists that mst f us fail t d justice t urselves. We’re usually better than we think we are.
Anther imprtant part f changing self-image is t nt think abut past mistakes. Dn’t let failures d harm. Our errrs r humiliatin (耻辱)ver mistakes are necessary steps in learning. It is all right t make mistakes. But when they have taught us what we did wrng, we shuld frget them and nt think them ver. Smetimes we keep remembering ur failures r mistakes and feel guilty r embarrassed abut them. We let them take ver, and then we develp a fear.
It is imprtant t have realistic expectatins f urselves. Sme f ur dissatisfactin might cme frm expecting t much f urselves. If we demand cnstant perfectin in everything we d, we can be disappinted and ur pr self-image will cntinue. If ur gal is t reach perfectin, we are dmed(注定失败)frm the start.
32. Which situatin agrees with the idea f the passage?
A. T utshine his clleagues, Je sets an idealistic gal.
B. T get alng with her classmates, Dris is always mdest abut herself.
C. T win a speech cntest, Tina pictures herself speaking mre cnfidently.
D. T becme a star player, Alexander repeatedly plays back his faults in his mind.
33. What is the purpse f Paragraph 3?
A. T clarify the rule f changing self-image.
B. T cnfirm the influence f changing self-image.
C. T highlight the imprtance f changing self-image.
D. T prpse a new pint f view n changing self-image.
34. Accrding t the authr, hw shuld we regard ur past mistakes?
A. They are tls fr vercming fear. B. They are part f ur grwth.
C. They are warnings fr future. D. They are harmful t ur develpment.
35. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title f the passage?
A. We Are What We D
B. We Are What We Think We Are
C. Be the Best We Can Be
D. What We Are Decides What We Think
