Recently, Tuthill’s team have shwn that an extremely frightening trick helps snw flies survive sub-zer cnditins. When a leg begins t freeze, the insects can rapidly self-amputate (自行截肢) it, preventing ice frm mving up int their bdies, the team reprts in a paper psted nline May 30 at biRxiv.rg.
Tuthill’s team used a thermal camera (热成像仪) t recrd 77 snw flies as they walked n cld plates. They fund the insects kept walking even when their bdy temperature fell t an average f -7℃. Mre than half f the snw flies tested drpped at least ne leg during the experiments.
This team als nticed a temperature rise in the flies’ legs just befre they fell ff. That rise is a sign f ice frmatin. Liquid water releases heat as it turns int ice. Neurns (神经元) in the leg may sense this temperature shift
and make amputatin happen, preventing the ice frm spreading, the team suggests. The flies “have abut half a secnd t get rid f their leg befre that wave f ice crashes int their bdy and then freezes all f their internal rgans,” Tuthill says. Snw flies didn’t lse their legs when the researchers pulled them hard — nly in respnse t freezing.
“Other animals have invented different strategies t prtect themselves frm frst. Sme insects prduce antifreeze prteins; certain snails and frgs simply withstand ice frming in their bdies. The cl thing abut snw flies is that they dn’t actually fllw either strategy” says Dr. Marshall, wh prvided feedback n the team’s manuscript, which has nt yet been published. “They let ice frm in their legs,” she says, and “self-amputate t get rid f it, which is just cmpletely strange t me.”
Snw flies that amputated their freezing legs survived mre than a minute lnger than flies that didn’t, the team fund. That extra time may nt seem like much. But in the wild, when night is falling and the temperature is drpping and the insects are “lking eagerly fr a place t settle dwn.” Tuthill says, it culd be the difference between life and death.

the cuntry’s first civilian astrnaut和first paylad (载荷) expert in space为并列关系,故用连词and连接。故填and。
