泰国每年举行大象节是为了感谢泰国的大象,因为它们的祖先曾在战争中献出生命来抵御外敌、保卫国家。在14至18世纪时,象群被用于载运士兵进入战场。
大象是泰国的吉祥动物、国宝,在古代不仅是日常生活中必不可少的重要交通工具,也是战争中国王的坐骑。然而,现今泰国全国野生大象仅存约3000头,人工饲养的大象也只有4000头左右,滥捕大象的问题仍然存在。泰国政府从1998年起,将每年的3月13日定为"大象节",希望通过"大象节"唤起民众对大象的爱护及对大象文化的传承。
