I went t Yuanhe Middle Schl in Xihaigu, Ningxia Hui Autnmus Regin, a place that used t be ne f the prest regins in China, t participate in an English class with village children.
Mst kids in the schl cme frm pr village hmes and are “left behind” children — kids whse parents wrk in the cities t make a better living. After class, we chatted a lt, and they wndered abut everything, using “utside wrld” as a term t describe the wider glbe fr many times.
Taking care f rural children is essential. The schl ffers barding services and free breakfast and lunch t the students, wh can als vide chat with their parents daily. T better care fr the village children, the schl prvides utdr hiking, technlgy, art, and freign language prgrams t help them understand the utside wrld. After all, high-quality educatin t disadvantaged village children is the key t pverty-alleviatin (扶贫) effrts.
During my trip in Xihaigu, I als visited Ningxia Nrmal University, where ver 70% f its students majr in educatin.
In 2013, lcal and central gvernments launched public-funded prgrams t recruit students interested in becming teachers in Ningxia’s rural villages and districts. By 2023, 3,500 students were enrlled in the prgram, many f whm came frm disadvantaged village husehlds in Xihaigu.
I had the pprtunity t speak with Yang, a public-funded student frm the nce-pr Xihaigu regin. After finishing schl, he planned t stay in the Xihaigu area as a teacher t teach the kids knwledge.
Yang tld me that knwledge is the key t leading a better life as well as understanding the wrld. A lack f knwledge is ne f the main factrs f being pr. Mney culd help the pr fr a while but nt nce fr all. He hpes that by sharing knwledge with the kids in his hmetwn, he can help them braden their hrizns and develp an bjective perspective n the wrld. He envisins a future where these children can use their knwledge t make a better life, stp peple’s steretypes (固有印象) abut China and share Xihaigu’s stries with the rest f the wrld.
    4. Why did the kids repeatedly mentin “utside wrld”?
A Out f curisity abut the unknwn wrld.
    B. With the hpe f changing the wrld utside.
    C. T shw their experiences abut the wider glbe.
    D. Fr lack f cnfidence twards their inner wrld.
    5. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?

    B. The aid t the kids n life and educatin.
    C. The teaching cnditins f the schl.
    D. The high-quality educatin f the schl.
    6. What can we infer frm the authr’s trip in Ningxia Nrmal University?
    A. Students in this university can be free f charge.
    B. The authrities supprt Ningxia’s rural areas by stressing educatin.
    C. The public-funded prgrams target at the students frm pr regins.
    D. Mney is less imprtant than knwledge fr the peple in Xihaigu’s villages.
    7. Which f the fllwing may agree with Yang’s pinin?
    A. Learn and live.B. Sharp tls make gd wrk.
    C. Hang n t yur dreams.D. Pverty-alleviatin starts with educatin.

As archaelgists(考古学家) examined ancient tmbs in Turfan in western China, they discvered sme surprisingly well-preserved and familiar relics. Thugh hardened frm ver 1,000 years, there sat little dumplings.
Exactly wh invented dumplings remains a mystery. But sme schlars suspect they were first spread by nmadic(游牧的) Turkic peples living in western China and Central Asia. This is thught t be the case because “manti,” meaning “dumpling” r “steamed bun” in many Turkic languages, appears t be the rt wrd fr dumpling in several ther languages. Ancient Turkic peple prbably filled their dumplings with meat. But it’s unclear when this practice began, r whether they learned the art f dumpling-making frm thers. Hwever this happened, dumplings certainly gathered steam in ancient China.
Dumplings cntinued t take ff and diversify in China ver the next thusand years. Instead f the traditinal meat filling, sme cmmunities chse vegetarian(素食) dumplings. Peple develped new cking methds. The relatinship between Chinese dumplings and thse in ther areas is tricky t trace, but fd histrians have made their best guesses based n available clues.
Besides Turkic tribes, sme schlars believe that the Mngl Empire als cntributed t the spread f dumplings, perhaps intrducing them t parts f Eastern Eurpe. These dumplings culd have cme by way f China r directly frm sme f the Turkic peples the Mngls hired t run their empire. One thery is that this gave rise t dumplings like pelmeni in Russia, piergi in Pland and vareniki in Ukraine. The Mngl Empire als cntrlled Krea and might have likewise intrduced dumplings there. Later, after Chinese dumpling varieties were intrduced t mre cuntries, English speakers began calling them dumplings, which means “little lumps”. During the Secnd Wrld War, Chinese “jiazi” were brught t Japan. S what abut the Italian dumpling-like pasta? Sme histrians think it might be brught by Arab cnquerrs.
It’s unlikely that all dumpling dishes came frm the same rt traditin. Hwever, we can appreciate the mysterius histrical web that made dumplings s varius.
    8. What made Turkic peples suspected t first spread dumplings?
    A. The languages they used.B. Their eating habits.
    C. Their dumpling-making skills.D. The newly fund tmbs.
    9. What des the phrase “gathered steam” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. The spreading prcess f dumplings.
    B. The pssible rigins f dumplings.
    C. Differences between varius dumplings.
    D. Reasns fr the ppularity f dumplings.
    11. Which f the fllwing best describe dumplings accrding t the passage?
    A. Delicius.B. Diverse.C. Unusual.D. Reginal.
