Zack Nelsn, her byfriend, wanted t give her the ability t explre mre places cnveniently, s he made a special wheelchair fr her, which wuld make it pssible.
Zack began by cmbining tw electric bikes and installing a seat in the centre. It wrked! Cambry experienced a whle new level f freedm using her new “ride”, and she culdn’t be mre grateful t Zack fr cming up with it. Fast frward t a year later, Cambry and Zack tied the knt. They als began mass-prductin f the special wheelchair. Thrughut that time, they imprved the riginal design t make it a mre reliable ff-rader.
While similar vehicles already exist in the market, they said they’re either slw r cst as much as a car. Cambry and Zack wanted t build smething quick, light, super lng-range, and affrdable at the same time. Hwever, cming up with that kind f electric ff-rader wasn’t easy.
The tughest challenge when develping the special wheelchair is the price. “We wanted t create smething that is affrdable fr everyne. Finding quality cmpnents, and a simple enugh design at the cheapest price pssibly tk quite a bit f time,” said Zack. “But I think we have smething nw that everyne will be able t enjy, at a fractin (少量) f the cst f ther ‘ff-rad wheelchairs’ currently n the market.” Anther great thing abut the vehicle is that it’s silent. Its rider will have n difficulty chatting with their cmpanin while using it. A standard schl day fr the average American yuth takes place indrs. But fr sme yung students wh attend frest schl, mst f their preschl r kindergarten educatin ccurs utdrs in frests, parks, r ther wild sites. At these schls, educatrs allw their students’ curisity t guide the curriculum (全部课程) and rely n nature t instill envirnmental values.
Frest schls vary in the amunt f time children spend utdrs, what they study, and hw they’re assessed, but all frest schls put nature first. They have the same standards fr child develpment as traditinal schls d, but their methds are rted in explring and cnserving the natural wrld.
Khavin Debbs, Executive Directr at Tiny Trees Preschl in Seattle. Washingtn, says ne f the benefits f a frest schl is hw it can adapt t students’ unique needs. High-energy students can run and climb. Shy students can sit alne t bserve an earthwrm with a magnifying glass. At Tiny Trees, in additin t learning with art materials, bks, and tys, students engage in a wide range f play-based learning, including ging n hikes, bserving wildlife, and identifying plants and animal tracks. They might ck ver a camp stve, r harvest berries t make jam. The students’ hands-n activities help them grasp scientific cncepts that might therwise seem abstract. “They’ve seen a tree’s leaves turn different clrs in fall, and then seen that same tree blm again in spring. All thse things really d help them understand.” said Debbs.
The ntin f children spending time utdrs t learn and play is nthing new. The mdern-day frest schl cncept riginated in Denmark in the 1950s, and then spread thrugh Eurpe and abrad. In the United States, frest schls are currently n the rise. A natinal survey dne in 2017 fund 250 frest schls perating in 43 states—100 mre than the year befre, with 80 percent f them maintaining waiting lists.
But even thugh they’re increasing in ppularity, frest schls aren’t yet reflective f the cultural, linguistic, r cgnitive diversity f American yuth. Thus, schls that want t be mre inclusive must be purpseful in increasing their influence and making their prgrams mre accessible.
