Eating nuts and peanuts reduces the risk f suffering a heart attack r strke, a new study claims. Researchers fund they were linked with a reduced risk f death frm heart disease amng peple n lw incmes. And they believe their findings suggest peanuts may be a cst-effective measure t imprve cardivascular(心血管)health because they are s cheap.
Hwever, experts heeded tday that salt-cvered nuts wuld nt have the same health benefits. Nuts are rich in nutrients and peanuts, althugh classified as ne bean, have nutrients similar t tree nuts.
The new study, led by Dr Xia-Ou Shu, f the Vanderbilt University Schl f Medicine, Tennessee, analysed varius grups f peple. One invlved 72,000 lw-incme black and white men and wmen living in the US, the ther 134,000 men and wmen living in Shanghai, China. In bth grups, men ate mre peanuts than wmen. In the US grup, abut half f the nuts cnsumed were peanuts, and in the Chinese grup nly peanut cnsumptin was cnsidered.
The researchers fund that verall, eating nuts reduced the risk f death frm heart disease. This was regardless f gender, race, bdy cnditin, smking, alchl cnsumptin and cnditins such as diabetes(糖尿病), high bld pressure and besity.
In the US, the highest cnsumptin resulted in a risk reductin f 21 percent. In the Chinese grup, it was 17 percent.
Dr Shu said: “We bserved n significant assciatins between nut r peanut cnsumptin and risk f death due t cancer and diabetes.” She added the findings highlight the large public health impact f nut r peanut cnsumptin in lwering deaths frm heart disease - especially fr their affrdability. The research was published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Dr Mitchell Katz, deputy editr f the jurnal, added: “Of curse, peanuts are nt really nuts - they are legumes since they grw in bushes, unlike tree nuts. But wh cares if they help us t live lnger at an affrdable price?”

Insects are disappearing. The wrld has 25 per cent fewer terrestrial insects nw than in 1990. This includes thse we rely n t pllinate ur crps and clean ur rivers. If we dn’t slve this prblem very sn, sme species will disappear.
There are many causes fr the insect decline, but insecticides (杀虫剂) are a majr part f the prblem. Thse used tday are lnger lasting and up t 10,000 times mre txic than sme that were banned in the 1970s. Adding t the prblem is that these pesticides are nw applied t crps prphylactically (预防地) and used whether pests are present r nt.
Overall, the amunt f pesticide applied t the land is decreasing, but this is a grssly misleading statistic. A recent paper fund that, between 2005 and 2015, there was a 40 per cent reductin in the amunt f pesticide applied t crps measured by weight. But because mdem insecticides are s much mre txic, the glbal txicity f treated land t pllinating insects has mre than dubled in the same perid.
Gvernments and regulating agencies are aware f the prblem, and sme parts f the wrld have mved t ban the use f certain insecticides utdrs in an attempt t help bees survive. But the pesticides used instead are just as txic.
One ften-tuted apprach is t use pesticide-free pest cntrl methds. These varied techniques are gathered under the name f integrated pest management (IPM) and have been arund fr decades. They ffer effective crp prtectin and include methds such as crp rtatin and the use f natural predatrs. But their adptin has been incredibly slw, because spraying pesticides is viewed as an easier ptin. As a result, IPM methds are unfrtunately seldm used tday
Neither changing insecticides nr shifting t IPM is a quick fix. We argue instead that we need a subtle shift in fcus, away frm killing pests and twards prtecting crps.
By using the minimal dse we need t prtect crps, we culd reduce the amunt f insecticide t a fractin f what is used tday. Farmers wuld benefit frm these changes. They wuld spend less mney n pesticides and imprve crp prductin by keeping health pllinatr insects abut. Reducing insecticide dses wn’t slve the insect decline prblem but it is a mve that culd win us time t make fd prductin mre sustainable and recncile (使和谐) farmlands and the natural ecsystems we crucially depend n. And that will allw insects t recver.
63. Accrding t the passage, which f the statements is NOT true abut the insect decline?
A. Currently-used pesticides are much mre txic than befre.
B. Pesticides have played a key rle in reducing the number f insects.
C. The amunt f pesticides used is much mre than befre.
D. The txicity in pesticides lasts lnger than befre.
64. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd in paragraph 5?
A. Bradly-publicized.B. Recently-created.
C. Frequently-criticized.D. Generally-prved.
65. What is the best way t treat the insect decline?
A. T prtect crps rather than killing ut insects.
B. T raise large-scale natural predatrs f insects.
C. T search and develp new pesticides.
D. T shift t the IPM pesticide-cntrlling methd.
66. What is the best title fr this passage?

Student Drught Bits Smaller Universities
As Lyla University New Orleans is getting ready fr fall classes next mnth, the 101-year-ld university faces a crisis: ____67____ ‘It was a pretty big hit,’ said Mare K. Manganar, vice president fr academic affairs.
Nw, alng with preparing fr fall curses, Lyla fficials are wrried abut hw t plug a S9.5 millin shrtfall in the schl’s S163 millin annual budget, the result f 221 fewer freshmen than expected.
Since last May, the 5,000-student private cllege has impsed a hiring freeze, reduced faculty hurs, hired utside firms t revamp its marketing and financial aid, and is setting up early-retirement packages fr sme faculty. If that isn’t sufficient t fill the gap, the schl may tap its S275 millin endwment. ____68____.
Many in higher educatin believe this might be a trend fr smaller clleges. After decades f grwth, cllege enrllment natinally drpped 2.3% this spring, cmpared with spring 2012 accrding t a reprt released by the Natinal Student Clearinghuse Research Center. ____69____ The number f U.S. high-schl graduates peaked at 3.4 millin in 2010-2011 and is prjected t fall t 3.2 millin by 2013-14, accrding t the Western Interstate Cmmissin fr Higher Educatin.
Lyla has set up numerus cmmittees t figure ut what went wrng and make sure it desn't happen again. Schl fficials were shcked this year by the lw fall turnut. The vice president fr enrllment management resigned abruptly in June. Lyla fficials believe a reasn fr the decline was a reductin in financial aid it ffered t the incming class ff its $35,504 tuitin, frm an average discunt f 58% last year t abut 55% this fall.

Regular exercise can reduce a wman’s risk f cancer, but the benefits may slip away if she gets t little sleep, U.S. researchers said n Mnday. The study invlving 5,968 wmen in Maryland cnfirmed previus findings that peple wh d regular physical activity are less likely t develp cancer.
But when the researchers lked at the wmen ages 18 t 65 wh were in the upper half in terms f the amunt f physical exercise they gt per week, they fund that sleep appeared t play an imprtant rle in cancer risk.
Thse wh slept less than seven hurs nightly had a 47 percent higher risk f cancer than thse wh gt mre sleep amng the physically active wmen, the researchers reprted at a meeting f the American Assciatin fr Cancer Research.
“We think it’s quite interesting and intriguing. It’s kind f a first lk int this. It isn’t smething that has been widely studied,” James McClain f the Natinal Cancer Institute, part f the U.S. gvernment’s Natinal Institutes f Health, said in a telephne interview.
McClain, wh led the study, said it is unclear exactly hw getting t little sleep may make ne mre susceptible(易受感染的) t cancer. “Getting adequate sleep has been lng assciated with health,” McClain said.
The U.S. Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin calls sleep lss an under-recgnized public health prblem, saying Americans are getting less and less slumber. The CDCP said the percentage f adults reprting sleeping six hurs r less a night increased frm 1985 t 2006. Sleep experts say chrnic sleep lss is assciated with besity, diabetes, high bld pressure, strke, cardivascular disease, depressin, cigarette smking and excessive drinking.
In additin, research had shwn that peple wh get regular exercise have a reduced risk f breast, cln and ther types f cancer. Experts think the effects f exercise n the bdy’s hrmne levels, immune functin and bdy weight may play an imprtant rle.
