It has always been hrrible fr me t picture my life in ld age. My recent visits t the senir care center, hwever, relieved sme f my fears and prvided valuable fd fr thught.
Lking fr meaningful ways t spend my weekends after my exams, I signed up fr a prgram f arts and crafts fr the elderly run by my schlmates. I was infrmed that the Renci Nursing Hme, where the prgram wuld be held, accmmdated sme f the less frtunate elderly in Singapre. Sme backgrund research gave me the impressin that many f them suffered frm physical prblems and had little family supprt. As a result, I expected the atmsphere there t be discuraging. And, judging by the lack f interest in the painting activities, I truly sensed a feeling f aimlessness there. Given that we live in a sciety in which the relatinships between the generatins are weakening, perhaps the disappinting atmsphere in the hme wasn’t surprising. The peple were cut ff frm the ties that make life meaningful.
Is it safe t say then that ur lives after retirement will likely feel aimless? But after I spke t a Prtuguese-Chinese man, I thught that this wasn’t necessarily s. At the age f 90, he displayed a surprisingly strng sense f cntrl ver his life. His liveliness was exceptinal amng the elderly ppulatin in the hme. He had spent his life either traveling arund the wrld as a backpacker, r wrking hard in Singapre t save up fr his trips. He had made it a rule t learn freign languages, exercise and eat healthily—smething he cntinued t d during his stay in the nursing hme.
While he spke t me abut hw his time in Lndn had shaped his view f cultural difference, I lked int his eyes. I knew that this was the kind f cntrl ver life that I wanted fr myself. I dn’t want t spend half f my time wandering abut in freign cuntries like he did, but I d want t appreciate the richness that life has t ffer.

    B.It slved physical prblems.
C.It was full f impressive activities.

    B.The view f cultural difference.
C.The liveliness f an ld man.

Bilinguals(双语者) are smarter, says science. But the idea is relatively new. Up until the 1970s, mst educatrs had believed that learning tw languages at the same time wuld cnfuse children and slw their cgnitive(认知的) grwth.
Science disagreed with these pinins, says Ellen Bialystk, a prfessr f psychlgy. The arrival f new technlgy in the 1970s allwed scientists a new way t investigate hw different brains prcess language.

Cntrary t media reprts, executive functin is nt the same as intelligence, Bialystk adds. Even if the relatinship between bilingualism and actual intelligence is unclear, executive functin can help peple d a lt f things that may make them seem smarter, such as ding mre things at the same time and cancelling ut things that take their attentin away.
Many peple believe that knwing at least ne ther language makes it easier t learn a new ne, and cgnitive functin may play a part in that-the equivalent(等同物) f gd study habits fr yur brain. But Bialystk thinks cgnitive functin has less impact n language learners than the similarities between languages' structure and vcabulary. "In learning thse patterns, yu can get a bit f a free ride in learning a new language," she says. Despite the verall cgnitive benefits, bilingualism may present sme disadvantages. When children learn vcabulary, mnlinguals(单语者) can spend mre time remembering wrds in ne language, while bilinguals have t cnstruct tw different vcabularies.
"The biggest advantage in being bilingual is the same as having great internatinal friends: It allws a persn t understand a different way f thinking, with unique philsphies and assumptins abut hw thers see the wrld," Bialystk adds.
