As I walked int the Gerge Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theater, I felt as thugh I had stepped int a time machine. On the way t the traditinal, ld-timey bx ffice, tns f vintage mvie psters and the theater entrance made me feel like I was n Bradway. As everyne tk their seats, an lder gentleman wh lked like he walked straight ut f the 1920s gave the attendees a histrical backgrund f the film we were seeing-The Barker.
The film itself, which was released in 1928, is cnsidered a “part-talkie”. Befre films included synchrnized (同步的) sund, films were played with live accmpaniment and cntained subtitles t add cntext. With the inventin f synchrnized sund, films slwly added talking dialgue in scenes thrughut the film; these films were cnsidered “part-talkies”.
The Barker, which explres the lives f carnival wrkers, is the talking debut (首次登场) f all f the main cast. The film was revlutinary nt nly fr the technlgy but als fr the actrs. My film experience cnsists f mstly talkies, s when I finished The Barker, I felt like I witnessed smething brand new fr the first time.
The experience I had at Dryden Theater was unlike any mvie-ging experience I had ever had. The music, the film, and the atmsphere itself were cmpletely unique! Since viewing films has gradually been switched t streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has bth increased the accessibility f films and stripped us f reliance n a scial experience t watch a mvie-ne that attending The Barker reminded me f.
“Barbenheimer”, a phenmenn that cntrasts the bvius differences in the recently released mvies Barbie and Oppenheimer, allwed us t return t the mvie-ging adventure. Finally, everyne wanted big screens and surrund sund rather than the tiny screens in bedrms. Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece f cntent alngside ther peple. “Barbenheimer” brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema-ne that I think we shuld cntinue t engage in. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return t the cinema.
    4. Wh helped the audience knw better abut the histrical backgrund f The Barker?
    A. A star wh was cast in the mvie.
    B. A man wh had a lk f the past.
    C. An elderly gentleman frm the 1920s.
    D. A staff member wrking at the bx ffice.

    A. The Barker is a “part-talkie”.
    B. “Part-talkies” are ttally silent.
    C. “Part-talkies” invlve live accmpaniment.
D The films befre The Barker are “part-talkies”.
    6. What des the underlined wrd “stripped” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A Accused.B. Infrmed.C. Rbbed.D. Warned.
    7. What des the authr suggest?
    A. Having mre big screen experiences.
    B. Interacting mre with peple arund us.
    C. Engaging in “Barbenheimer” and watching The Barker.
    D. Reading mre vintage playbks befre watching mvies.
    【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. A

    【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece f cntent alngside ther peple. “Barbenheimer” brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema-ne that I think we shuld cntinue t engage in. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return t the cinema. (更重要的是,我们都能够与其他人一起与一段内容进行互动。Barbenheimer使去电影院消遣重新流行起来——我认为我们应该继续参与其中。我建议我们借鉴20世纪20年代的剧本,回到影院。)”可知,作者认为在影院观看电影有益于与电影内容的互动,建议大家回到影院,拥有更多的大屏幕体验。故选A项。

Tday’s Brussels spruts(孢子甘蓝) taste better than yu might remember frm childhd, and that is because a new variety has replaced the riginal vegetable. Yu can thank plant breeders fr the change. Mdem breeders, armed with new gene-editing technlgy, are lking t reprduce Brussels spruts’ reinventin.
In the late 1990s, scientists discvered specific chemicals which made Brussels spruts taste bitter. Plant breeders started grwing ld seeds, previusly abandned due t pr yields(产量), t lk fr tastier versins with lwer levels f these specific chemicals. Then they crssed these delicius but lw-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they fund a versin that made plenty f tasty spruts, transfrming the vegetable frm a bitter pill int a ppular dish.
But ther vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because mst breeding decisins favr plant traits(特性) that matter t vegetable grwers, nt vegetable eaters. Fr instance, disease resistance is prbably the majr fcus these days f mst breeding prgrams because that prevents the farmer frm grwing the crp. The taste f vegetables is ignred.
Peple, hwever, are nw becming interested in priritizing the taste f vegetables thanks in part t new genetic technlgy. “There’s never been a better time t be a fruit breeder r a vegetable breeder because we have mre tls and techniques, ” says Susan Brwn, an apple breeder at Crnell University.
Sme cmpanies are beginning t use thse tls t deal with the challenge f develping tastier vegetables. One cmpany, Pairwise, is fighting the same cmpunds that trubled Brussels spruts. But this time researchers are imprving the flavr f salad greens.
All vegetable grwers hpe that mre flavrful prducts n stre shelves will cnvince peple t cnsume the recmmended allwances(定量) f fruits and vegetables—and d s better than decades f nutritinal guidance have. “Dn’t waste yur time talking abut trying t educate peple t eat better, ”said Harry Klee, a prfessr wh specializes in tmat breeding. “Just give them prducts that taste better and that they want t eat. ”
    8. Why did plant breeders grw ld Brussels sprut seeds?
    A. T study why Brussels spruts are bitter.
    B. T research the specific chemicals.
    C. T select high-yielding prducts.
    D. T find the less bitter versins.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “fared” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Survived.B. Emerged.C. Mushrmed.D. Succeeded.
    10. What can we learn frm Susan Brwn’s wrds in paragraph 4?
    A. The breeding techniques are bming.
    B. The breeding techniques need n imprvement.
    C. The breeders are struggling t develp new species.
    D. The breeders shuld develp new genetic technlgy.
    11. Hw can fruits and vegetables be cnsumed mre accrding t Harry Klee?
    A. By enhancing the taste.
    B. By imprving the nutrients.
    C. By making them mre accessible.

Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. The teaching methd imprves memrizatin f separate facts, prceeding frm ne textbk chapter t the next withut necessarily making cnnectins between them.
With that in mind, we develped a series f crss-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bilgy curses. We asked them t identify cnnectins between the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin (酸化) n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge. The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn’t have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it’s the basis f science literacy (素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.
    12. What des the present science educatin fail t d accrding t the research?
    A. Extending students’ theretical knwledge.
    B. Invlving students in mre hands-n activities.
    C. Encuraging students t enjy the learning prcess.

    13. What can we learn abut the student interviewees?
    A. They have rich academic knwledge.
    B. They pay little attentin t bilgy curses.
    C. They hardly identify the cre ideas f science.
    D. They fully understand the imprtance f their majrs.
    14. What shuld students d in the cean acidificatin activity?
    A. Analysing the exact cmpsitin f sea water.
    B. Studying sme unusual phenmena under the sea.
    C. Cming up with practical methds t prtect marine life.
    D. Explaining the effects f carbn dixide n certain sea animals.
    15. What des the authr see frm the result f the study?
    A. The challenges existed in chemistry curses.
    B. The need t remve the unfairness in educatin.
