It turns ut that plants are getting help frm their friends undergrund—quite a bit mre than scientists had realized. A glbal team f researchers has calculated that arund 36% f the carbn released int the atmsphere each year frm the burning f fssil fuels is captured and delivered t a cmplicated system f fungi that lives beneath ur feet.
Plants take carbn dixide frm the air and use it t make sugars and fats. These are sent dwn t their rts, where they are taken up by s-called mycrrhizal (菌根) fungi. In exchange, the fungi prvide the plants with water and essential nutrients frm the sil. The mre carbn these fungi are able t draw in, the mre carbn dixide gets captured by plants.
Mycrrhizal fungi helped plants get established n land several hundred millins f years ag, and tday’s plants wuld have a hard time functining withut their partners under the grund. Yet “mycrrhizal fungi have been largely verlked,” said T by Kiers, executive directr f the Sciety fr the Prtectin f Undergrund Netwrks. “They represent an incredibly imprtant part f the carbn cycle, and we are nly just beginning t understand hw they wrk,” she said. “The urgency t understand that and link it t bidiversity belwgrund is the mst imprtant.”
The researchers als said that plants assciated with mycrrhizal fungi can take in eight times mre carbn than plants that are nt. Stephanie Kivlin, an eclgist at University f Tennessee, said the study is a crucial step tward imprving ur understanding f the plant-fungi du’s rle in reducing carbn dixide in the atmsphere. “These mutualism s(互利共栖) can act as a critical carbn sink in many ecsystems n the land,” she said.
Nt nly d the fungi take in carbn frm plants, they als help keep that carbn safely belwgrund by creating a sticky cmpund that hlds the sil tgether. Althugh mycrrhizal fungi have shrt life spans-nly a few years—their usefulness desn’t end after death. “This is my favrite part,” Kier s said. “After they die, they make a dead undergrund netwrk that acts as a scafflding t hld the sil tgether,” lcking the carbn in place.
28. What d the researchers find?
A. Fungi absrb carbn frm plants.B. Carbn is essential t plants.
C. Carbn is released int the air.D. Plants exchange fd with fungi.
29. What can we learn frm paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Carbn sink reduces carbn dixide.B. Carbn cycle is linked t bidiversity.
C. Plants nwadays take in carbn as usual.D. Plant-fungi system functins efficiently.
30. What d we knw abut the dead fungi?
A. They becme sticky scafflding.B. They help prevent carbn release.
C. They prvide vital nutrients.D. They change int fssil fuels.

Fr a mre in-depth analysis, the researchers acquired 39 distinct straw brands made frm five materials: paper, bamb, glass, stainless steel, and plastic. These straws, mainly surced frm retailers and restaurants, underwent tw PFAS test in grunds. A shcking 69 percent f these brands cntained PFAS, with 18 distinct types f PFAS identified. Paper straws were the primary causes, with 90 percent testing psitive fr PFAS. These chemicals were als fund in 80 percent f bamb straws, 75 percent f plastic straws, and 40 percent f glass straws. Stainless steel straws, hwever, were cmpletely PFAS-free.
Althugh the PF AS levels were minimal and straws are used spradically, these chemicals can accumulate in the human bdy ver years. “Small amunts f PFAS, while nt harmful in themselves, can add t the chemical lad already present in the bdy,” says Dr. Grffen. “The presence f PFAS in paper and bamb straws shws they are nt necessarily bidegradable,” Dr. Grffen cncludes. “We did nt detect any PFAS in stainless steel straws, s I wuld advise cnsumers t use this type f straw.”
32. What is PFAS accrding t the passage?

A. Entirely.B. Occasinally.C. Cnsequently.D. Deliberately.
35. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. PFAS are detected in straw brands.B. Different straws are tested fr PF AS.
C. Stainless steel straws are sustainable.D. Paper straws maybe wrse than plastic.
