I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a vide abut saking the lettuce stub(残余部分)in water t grw a whle new vegetable. S I tk ut a wide-muthed mug and placed the stub int it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the windw.
On a snwy mrning, I nticed the first sign. A first small leaf frm its heart spread ut. A tiny green flag f hpe. Beaten, but nt defeated. This lettuce was nt dne living! Within days, it was impssible t see the cuts where I had remved the leaves. The grwth was explsive. And when I lifted the blssming head ut f the mug(大杯),tiny rt threads fell dwn, seeking fr the earth. What is grwing here? Lettuce r hpe?
If I were a lettuce in a similar cnditin, I’d want t skeptically assess where I fund myself befre cmmitting t full grwth. Yet fr this lettuce, my inadequate ffering f water and a place by a windw was enugh fr it t decide t reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug f water, in faith. This is the heart f this lettuce: alive, strng and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided t call it Mnty.
Mnty wanted t grw, as we all d. I think I gave him a little lve and freedm. Thse tw ingredients were all he needed t return t himself. I see jy in this lettuce. The return t self is always an expressin f jy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency f all living things.
Mnty still lives in a mug, but I’m ging t transplant him utside. He deserves t becme his full self. The nly prblem I see nw is my capacity t supprt Mnty. I hpe I have enugh f a green finger.
I’m surprised t find myself where I am. Maybe Mnty is, t. I have the same chice as he des: give in and decay(腐败),r start again. The prspect f starting again is discuraging. But my lettuce-friend, Mnty, leads the way. I can nly hpe t be as brave.

Nuclear bmbs. That’s the g-t answer fr incming space bjects like asterids (小行星) and cmets as far as Hllywd is cncerned. Mvies like Deep Impact and Armageddn rely n nuclear weapns, delivered by stars like Bruce Willis, t save the wrld and deliver the drama.
But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astrnmers sptted a dangerus in-cming space rck, the safest and best answer might be smething mre subtle, like simply pushing it ff curse by crashing it with a small spacecraft.
That’s just what NASA did n Mnday evening, when a spacecraft headed straight int an asterid called Dimrphs, which is arund 7 millin miles away and pses n threat t Earth. It’s abut 525 feet acrss and rbits anther larger asterid.
In images streamed (传输) as the crash neared, the egg-shaped asterid grew in size frm a little spt n screen t have its full rcky surface cme quickly int fcus befre the signal went dead as the craft hit right n target.
Events happened exactly as engineers had planned, they said, with nthing ging wrng. “As far as we can tell, ur first planetary defense test was a success,” said Elena Adams, the missin systems engineer, wh added that scientists lked n with “bth terrr and jy” as the spacecraft neared its final destinatin.
The crash was the peak f NASA’s Duble Asterid Redirectin Test (DART), a 7-year and mre than $300 millin effrt which launched a space vehicle in Nvember f 2021 t perfrm humanity’s first-ever test f planetary defense technlgy. It will be abut tw mnths, scientists said, befre they will be able t determine if the crash was enugh t drive the asterid slightly ff curse, prbably shrtening its riginal rbit.
NASA plans t launch an asterid-hunting space telescpe named NEO Surveyr in 2026. “We’ve tracked lts f space rcks, especially the larger nes that culd cause extinctin-level events. Thankfully, nne currently threaten Earth. But many asterids the size f Dimrphs haven’t yet been discvered, and thse culd ptentially take ut a city if they came crashing dwn,” explains Lindley Jhnsn, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer.

The number f fish caught just utside a recently expanded marine (海洋) prtected area in Hawaii has risen. It is a sign that quadrupling (四倍) the size f the reserve in 2016 may have shred fish ppulatins in the regin.
When the Marine Natinal Mnument arund Hawaii was enlarged t 1,510,000 square kilmeters, marine cnservatinists arund the wrld rejiced.
Fishers may have felt differently, hwever, as fishing inside the area is nt allwed. Yet by creating a space fr dwindling tuna ppulatins t recver, supprters argued, the reserve wuld benefit fisheries as well.
As ppulatins inside the reserve bundaries steadily increased, they predicted, the fish wuld spill (溢出) ver int the surrunding areas, increasing the amunt f tuna available t catch.
Prving that is tricky, hwever, as tuna can’t be cunted directly. Their numbers may rise r fall fr a variety f reasns ther than the expansin f a reserve. But the new study, published in Science this week, strngly suggests the number f fish caught just utside the MPA is higher nw than it used t be.
Alan Friedlander, chief scientist fr the Natinal Gegraphic Sciety’s Pristine Seas prject, calls the study a “very careful and strict test f spillver frm marine prtected areas.”
Imprtantly, says Jhn Lynham, an envirnmental ecnmist at the University f Hawaii and ne f the study’s authrs, the increase in tuna catches near the reserve held up even when lking at the average numbers caught by particular fishers. This shws the effect is nt due t mre effective crews nw fishing lcal waters, he explains. T accunt fr effrt, catch numbers were divided by the ever-increasing number f fishing hks in the area.
Lynham and clleagues fund the catch per hk increased ver the 10 years f the study. Fishers were catching n average six mre yellwfin and five mre bigeye tuna per year after the expansin than befre.
“That last ne, especially, was a surprise,” says Lynham, “because it is ecnmically much mre imprtant, and there were fewer indicatins f an increase.”
32. What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
A. The rising number f fish caught is a sign f a well-reserved area.
B. Enlarge the size f reserve may cntribute t the increasing f fish ppulatin.
C. The number f fish caught has risen t quadrupling (四倍) the size f that in 2016.
D. Fish catching utside the reserve des gd t the expanded marine prtected area.
33. Hw did fishers feel when the reserve annunced expanded?
A. They felt jyful.B. They felt different.
C. They felt unpleasant.D. They felt excited.
34. Hw d the researchers prve the tuna ppulatin has increased?
A. By figuring the average catch per hk in the area.
B. By summing up the catch f mare effective crews.
C. By lking at the numbers caught by particular fishers.
D. By detecting the number f tuna ppulatin in the surrunding area.
35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Tuna ppulatin embraces a bst
B. Marine Prtected Areas Help Fisheries
C. Lcal fisheries hld a prmising future
D. Tuna ppulatin can be cunted scientifically
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Hw much time d yu spend ding research befre yu make a decisin? There are peple wh g ver every detail exhaustively befre making a chice.
36 Psychlgists call this way f thinking a cgnitive bias (偏见), a tendency tward a specific mental mistake.
T study “jumping”, we examined decisin-making patterns amng mre than 600 peple frm the general ppulatin. We fund that jumpers made mre errrs than nn-jumpers n prblems that require thughtful analysis. 37 In a quiz abut US civics, they verestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly mre than ther participants did—even when their answers were wrng.
S what is behind “jumping”?Psychlgical researchers cmmnly distinguish between tw pathways f thught: autmatic system, which reflects ideas that cme t the mind easily, spntaneusly and withut effrt, and cntrlled system including cnscius and effrtful reasning. Jumpers and nnjumpers are equally influenced by autmatic thughts. 38
It is the cntrlled system that helps peple cunter balance mental biases intrduced by the autmatic system. As a result, jumpers were mre likely t accept the cnclusins made at first blush withut further questining. A lack f cntrlled thinking is als mre bradly cnnected t their prblematic beliefs and faulty reasning.
39 A methd called metacgnitive training can be used t target their biases, which can help peple think mre deliberatively. In this training, participants are cnfrnted with their wn biases. They can learn abut the missteps and ther ways f thinking thrugh the prblem at hand. It helps t chip away at participants’ vercnfidence.
In everyday life, the questin f whether we shuld think things thrugh r instead g with ur gut is a frequent and imprtant ne. 40 Smetimes the mst imprtant decisin we make can be t take sme mre time befre making a chice.

G. Recent studies shw that even gathering just a little bit mre evidence may
help us avid a majr mistake.
