It all started with a simple questin: “Can I paint yur prtrait?”

In that first unexpected, Petersn learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d mved t Califrnia t pursue a career in music, but he sn fell n hard times and ended up living n the street fr mre than a decade. “It was the weirdest thing t me,” Petersn recalled later. “I saw beauty n the face f a man wh hadn’t shaved in prbably a year. Paper straws, which are being pushed acrss the U.S. as an ec-friendly alternative t plastic versins, may cntain “frever chemicals” that are harmful t bth humans and the envirnment and were bserved mre ften than in a sample f plastic straws, a new Eurpean study has fund.
Belgian researchers tested 39 straw brands frm restaurants and retailers fr synthetic (人工合成的) chemicals knwn as ply and perfluralkyl substances (PFAS). The study fund that the majrity f straws cntained thse chemicals, but they were mst cmmn in thse made frm paper and bamb. The chemicals are referred t as “frever chemicals” as they can remain fr thusands f years in the envirnment. The chemicals have been assciated with health issues like liver damage r kidney cancer and can harm the envirnment as well.
Of the brands tested, 90% f the paper straws cntained PFAS, cmpared t 80% f bamb straws, 75% f plastic straws and 40% f glass straws. Nne f the steel straws cntained the chemicals. The study was published in the peer-reviewed jurnal Fd Additives and Cntaminants. Researchers stressed that PFAS cncentratin was lw and psed a limited risk t health, given that peple use such straws nly ccasinally. But they can remain in the bdy fr years, and cncentratins can build up, they said in a release.
“Straws made frm plant-based materials, such as paper and bamb, are ften advertised as being mre sustainable and ec-friendly than thse made frm plastic,” researcher Dr. Thim Grffen, an envirnmental scientist at the University f Antwerp, said in a statement. “Hwever, the presence f PFAS in these straws means that’s nt necessarily true.”
It wasn’t clear whether the chemicals were added by manufacturers r ccurred due t cntaminatin (污染) frm sil and water during manufacturing. The study did nt lk int whether the straws culd cntaminate liquids.
