“We are nw witnessing the first signs f a new wave f extinctins f cntinentally distributed bird species,” says lead authr Alexander Lees, senir lecturer at Manchester Metrplitan University in the United Kingdm. “Bird diversity peaks glbally in the trpics and it is there that we als find the highest number f threatened species.”
The study says abut 48% f existing bird species wrldwide are knwn r suspected t be underging ppulatin declines. Ppulatins are stable fr 39% f species. Only 6% are shwing increasing ppulatin trends, and the status f 7% is still unknwn. The study authrs reviewed changes in bird bidiversity using data frm the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature’s “Red List” t reveal ppulatin changes amng the wrld’s 11,000 bird species, The findings mirrr the results f a 2019 study which determined that nearly 3 billin breeding birds have been lst during the past 50 years acrss the United States and Canada.
Despite their findings, study authrs say there is hpe fr bird cnservatin effrts, but transfrmative change is needed. “The fate f bird ppulatins is strngly dependent n stpping the lss f habitats,” says Lees. “That is ften driven by demand fr resurces.
