In English it’s cmmn t say, “I knw this twn like the back f my hand!” While we may knw ur twns really well, hw well d we actually knw ur hands? Maybe nt quite as well as we think, said a scientific study.
Matthew Lng and his team frm University Cllege Lndn studied the left hands f 100 peple. With their hands placed palms dwn under a bard, Lng’s team gave the instructin t pint t their knuckles (指关节) and fingertips with a marker. Hw did they d? Nt that well.
“Peple think their hand is wider than it actually is,” said Lng. He said they als seemed t think their fingers were shrter than their true lengths. Peple were mst accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up t their pinkies (小手指)。
“It is cnnected t ur sense f psitin,” explained Lng. Humans knw where different parts f ur bdies are, even if we can’t see them. “It tells us whether a jint is straight r nt,” said Lng. “We als need t knw the distances between ur jints,“ he went n. Our brains knw the sizes and shapes f ur bdies frm the maps they make fr themselves. “This experiment tried t find thse maps,” he said.
Maybe maps dn’t need t be perfect. But why aren’t ur brains mre accurate? Lng said ur brains “see” areas based n ur sense f tuch, with the strnger the sense f tuch in a specific bdy part, the bigger that bdy part seems. An example is ur lips. As they have mre nerves than ur nses, ur brain’s map shws ur lips are bigger. The same thing can happen with bdy parts that have a lt f nerves. If yu’ve ever had smething stuck in yur teeth it prbably felt huge! That’s because ur tngues als have lts f nerves.
If yu want t have sme fun, try this test with yur classmates. Get sme bards and sme markers and have them mark the spts where they think their knuckles and fingertips are. Cmpare their hands t the marker spts and see hw well they have perfrmed.
    8. What can we learn frm the experiment?
    A. Peple are always mre accurate t judge the width f their palms.
    B. The experiment is t measure with and length f hands accurately.
    C. Peple’ s perceptin f hands is nt smething they take fr granted.
    D. The experiment explres the difference between left and right hands.

    A. The size f the hand.B. The misbelief peple had.
    C. The map the brain makes.D. The psitin f each bdy part.

    A. The shapes f ur bdies.B. Maps f rgans.
    C. The distances between jints.D. The brain.
    11. What’s the purpse f the passage?
    A. T give us a further insight int the brain.
    B. T cnvince us that seeing is nt believing.
    C. T cnduct a wider research abut ur hands.
    D. T intrduce an easy but interesting experiment.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段第二、三句“While we may knw ur twns really well, hw well d we actually knw ur hands? Maybe nt quite as well as we think, said a scientific study.(虽然我们可能非常了解我们的城镇,但我们到底有多了解我们的手?一项科学研究称,可能没有我们想象的那么好。)”可知人们对手的了解并不像我们以为的那样,故选C。
    【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“‘Peple think their hand is wider than it actually is,’ said Lng. He said they als seemed t think their fingers were shrter than their true lengths. Peple were mst accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up t their pinkies (小手指)。(Lng说:“人们认为自己的手比实际要宽。他还说,大家似乎还认为自己的手指比实际长度短。人们在找大拇指时最准确,但越指向小拇指,准确率就越低。)”可知此段介绍了人们对手尺寸的误解;第四段第一句“‘It is cnnected t ur sense f psitin,’ explained Lng. (‘这与我们的方位感有关。’Lng解释道。)”中的It指代第三段所阐述的人们所以为的内容,即对于手尺寸产生的误解。故选B。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段第二句“Lng said ur brains ‘see’ areas based n ur sense f tuch, with the strnger the sense f tuch in a specific bdy part, the bigger that bdy part seems. An example is ur lips. As they have mre nerves than ur nses, ur brain’s map shws ur lips are bigger. The same thing can happen with bdy parts that have a lt f nerves.
文章第一段“In English it’s cmmn t say, ‘I knw this twn like the back f my hand!’ While we may knw ur twns really well, hw well d we actually knw ur hands? Maybe nt quite as well as we think, said a scientific study.(在英语中,我们常说:‘我对这个城镇了如指掌!’虽然我们可能非常了解我们的城镇,但我们到底有多了解我们的手?一项科学研究称,可能没有我们想象的那么好。)”从人们对手的了解出发,介绍了人们对手的尺寸的误解与大脑通过触觉感知身体的不同部位有关,大脑会扭曲我们对身体的认知。所以这篇文章的目的是更深层次地介绍了我们的大脑,故选A。

Lng and thin stne tls were fund near the bttle, which culd have been used t extract the substance within. Nw, Kramberger and his clleagues have analysed the substance in the bttle and examined 13 thers frm the same perid.
The mystery material cntained a white lead mineral called cerussite, while different lead minerals were identified in tw ther bttles. The three lead-cntaining bttles als had cntents cming frm beeswax (蜂蜡) inside.
The bttles’ cntents culd have been used fr painting. says Kramberger. But he says it is mre likely that they were csmetics, because they cntained cmmn ingredients fr such prducts knwn frm later cultures. Cerussite pwder was very ppular amng the ancient Greeks and Rmans fr skin whitening and remedies, despite is knwn txicity (毒性).
Gaydarska says the new study supprts what archaelgists have lng thught—“that the abilities and cultures f Nelithic peple were far mre cmprehensive and cmplicated than they are ften given credit fr”.
    12. Why are the small bttles unearthed in Slvenia special?
    A. The bttles might have been wrn arund the necks r waists.
    B. The bttles cntained sme ingredients related t the make-up.
    C. The time f the bttles is much earlier than previusly thught.
    D. Researchers were astnished at the number f the similar bttles.
    13. Accrding t Kramberger’s finding, what is the substance cntained in the bttles?
    A. String.B. White paint.C. Stne tls.D. Cerussite.
    14. What can we infer frm the passage?
    A. The technlgy f extracting substances was already advanced in ancient times.
    B. Cerussite pwder was a perfect slutin t skin prblems fr ancient Eurpeans.
    C. It’s easy fr archaelgists t find the cntainers with remains f frmer cntent.
