Making marks r signing names in the sand is a great fun fr mst travelers n a vacatin beach. But fr Dubai-based Filipin artist Nathaniel A. Alapide, it’s hw he became a Guinness Wrld Recrd hlder.
Dubai’s 72 kilmeters castline, and the vast Arabian Desert, are Alapide’s canvas (画布). Using nly a simple garden tl, he draws enrmus lines acrss the beaches and deserts, making huge and cmplex designs. His average drawing is arund 20 meters squared. When he includes a written message, the pieces can be mre than 100 meters lng.
Alapide’s sand art began in 2014, when he drew a tree in memry f his late grandmther n the beach, near Jumeirah Beach Htel. The size f the drawing appealed t the htel which ffered him his first full-time jb as a sand artist in 2015. Since then, he has decrated the sands with arund 1,900 drawings. He’s been assigned by big brands, and he created a wrk fr Natinal Gegraphic fr the prgram “The Emirates Frm Abve”. In 2022, Alapide set a new recrd fr the wrld’s largest sand image.
Thugh Alapide has crafted a career frm the practice, he says creating an artwrk frm sand isn’t always plain sailing. “On the 20th day f creating the wrld-recrd piece, we were almst 70% dne but there was this weather that happened,” he says. “It was raining, and the wind was s strng, which remved almst the whle piece.”
“I think where I find this kind f wrk interesting,” Alapide cntinues. He says that the temprary nature f his wrk reminds him that everything is in cnstant change. “And I think making sand art is a great way t cnnect with peple,” he adds. “I like t watch hw peple interact with the wrk and I have fund that the kids ntice the drawings mre than the adults.
