It wasn’t until the last mnths f his life, mre than 20 years later, that we discvered I culd detect the disease in thers, t.
We felt a respnsibility t d smething. We attended a lecture by Prf. Kunath, a neurbilgist. I asked, “Why is the smell f Parkinsn’s nt being used fr early diagnsis?, , He didn’t answer and we left, disappinted. But fur mnths later, he called ur hme. He had fund me after relaying my questin t a clleague, wh tld him, “Yu must find her.” We began t wrk as a team t prve my thery.
When Les died in 2015, he made me prmise I’d carry n the research. I spent time in labs, smelling sufferers skin il n swabs (棉签). I culd detect whether the persn had Parkinsn’s with 95% accuracy. This year, ur research team published a breakthrugh: a three-minute test that can detect the disease by running a swab alng smene’s neck.
I’ve becme knwn and delivered many lectures. I’m wrking n detecting cancers and tuberculsis. I never imagined, at 72, this wuld be my lift’s wrk. I cnstantly think abut hw I lst my Les, but als hw I finally fulfilled my prmise.

Human scieties develped fd preferences based n what was available and what the grup decided it liked mst. Thse preferences were then passed alng as part f the set f scially learned behavirs, values, knwledge and custms that make up culture. Besides humans, many ther scial animals are believed t exhibit frms f culture in varius ways, t.
In fact, accrding t a new study led by Harvard scientist Liran Samuni, bnbs (倭黑猩猩), ne f ur clsest living relatives, culd be the latest additin t the list.
The researchers studied the hunting and feeding habits f tw neighbring grups f bnbs at the Kklpri Bnb Reserve in the Demcratic Republic f Cng. Analyzing the data, they saw many similarities in the lives f the tw bnb grups, given the names the Ekalakala and the Kkalng. They als bth have the access and pprtunity t hunt the same kind f prey (猎物). This, hwever, is precisely where researchers nticed a striking difference.
The grups cnsistently preferred t hunt and feast n tw different types f prey. The Ekalakala grup went after an anmalure that is capable f mving thrugh the air frm tree t tree. The Kkalng grup, n the ther hand, favred a duiker that lives n the frest flr.
“It’s basically like tw human cultures expliting a cmmn resurce in different ways,” says Samuni. “Think abut tw cultures living clse t each ther but having different preferences: One prefers chicken while the ther is mre f a beef-eating culture.”
Using statistical mdeling, the scientists fund this behavir happens independent f factrs like the lcatin f the hunts, their timing r the seasn. In fact, the researchers’ mdel fund that the nly variable that culd reliably predict prey preference was whether the hunters were team Ekalakala r team Kkalng.
The researchers haven’t yet investigated hw the bnb grups learned this hunting preference, but thrugh their analysis they were able t rule ut eclgical factrs r genetic differences.
Basically, it means all evidence pints tward this being a learned scial behavir. “If ur clsest living relatives have sme cultural traits (特征), then it’s likely ur ancestrs already had sme capacity fr culture,” Samuni says.

Swt satellite is scheduled t be launched Thursday mrning t cnduct a cmprehensive survey f Earth’s vital resurce. By using advanced micrwave radar technlgy it will cllect height-surface measurements f ceans, lakes and rivers in high-definitin detail ver 90% f the glbe. It’s really the first time t bserve nearly all water n the planet’s surface.
The majr missin is t explre hw ceans help t minimize climate change by absrbing atmspheric heat and carbn dixide in a natural prcess. Oceans are estimated t have absrbed mre than 90% f the extra heat trapped in the Earth’s atmsphere by human-caused greenhuse gases Swt will scan the seas frm the rbit and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevatins (高度) arund smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much f the ceans’ decrease f heat and carbn is believed t ccur. “Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key questin: What is the turning pint at which ceans start releasing, rather than absrbing, huge amunts f heat back int the atmsphere and speed up glbal warming, rather than limiting it,” said Nadya Shiffer, Swt’s prgram scientist.
By cmparisn, earlier studies f water bdies relied n data f rivers r ceans taken at specific pints, r frm satellites that can nly track measurements alng a ne-dimensinal line, requiring scientists t fill in data gaps thrugh extraplatin (外推法). Thanks t the radar instrument, Swt can scan thrugh clud cver and darkness ver wide ranges f the Earth. This enables scientists t accurately map their bservatins in tw dimensins regardless f weather r time f day and t cver large gegraphic areas far mre quickly than was previusly pssible.
“Rather than giving us a line f elevatins, it’s giving us a map f elevatins, and that’s just a ttal game changer,” said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swt freshwater science leader.
32.What des the underlined expressin “vital resurce” in the first paragraph refer t?
A.Technlgy.B.Climate.C.Oceans.D.Water.
33.What is the majr missin f Swt?
A.T explre the influences f greenhuse gases.
B.T explain the cnsequence f glbal warming.
C.T identify the causes f water absrbing heat and CO2.
D.T study the mechanism f ceans influencing climate.
34.What makes it pssible fr Swt t measure precisely?
A.The high-definitin cmputer.
B.Advanced radar technlgy.
C.The three-dimensinal image.
D.An accurate map f elevatins.
35.Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A.A Slutin t Climate Change

C.First Glbal Water Survey frm Space
D.The Successful Launch f Swt Satellite
