He als ran tw tech cmpanies, funded a third ne that wrks twards cntrlling the ppulatin f linfish, an invasive (入侵的) species.
But the parents are prud that they were able t help Mike with his scial skills alng with his intellectual skills. Melissa tld CNBC that peple expected “Yung Sheldn” befre they met her sn. Yung Sheldn is a televisin shw abut a child talent wh is an indr man and lacks scial skills. “But nce they talk t Mike, they understand that he’s just a nrmal 14-year-ld that happens t be able t d amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa gt t knw abut their child’s intelligence when he entered preschl. A child psychlgist tld them that their sn wuld need a different curse t supprt his fast-track develpment. Many parents aren’t cmfrtable with putting their children with 18-year-lds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child g thrugh it. “I wanted him t be scial and be able t deal with all the different persnalities in the classrms with lder children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able t d this by letting Mike find his wn vice and put it t use. “We let him rder fd when he’s 3 r 4 frm the waiter r waitress and intrduce himself t peple. Thse kinds f things are dne t encurage him t engage with everyne else and be mre cmfrtable talking t thers utside f ur envirnment,” said Melissa.
Thanks t his parents, Mike has learned t get alng with yung and ld alike.

Tday’s Brussels spruts (孢子甘蓝) taste better than yu might remember frm childhd, and that is because a new variety has replaced the riginal vegetable. Yu can thank plant breeders (植物育种家) fr the change. Mdern breeders, armed with new gene-editing technlgy, are lking t reprduce Brussels spruts’ reinventin.
In the late 1990s, scientists discvered specific chemicals which made Brussels spruts taste bitter. Plant breeders started grwing ld seeds, previusly abandned due t pr yields (产量), t lk fr tastier versins with lwer levels f these specific chemicals. Then they crssed these delicius but lw-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they fund a versin that made plenty f tasty spruts, transfrming the vegetable frm a bitter pill int a ppular dish.
But ther vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because mst breeding decisins favr plant traits that matter t vegetable grwers, nt vegetable eaters. Fr instance, disease resistance is prbably the majr fcus these days f mst breeding prgrams because that prevents the farmer frm grwing the crp. The taste f vegetables is ignred.
Peple, hwever, are nw becming interested in priritizing the taste f vegetables thanks in part t new genetic technlgy such as the gene-snipping technique CRISPR and DNA sequencing which is cheap enugh t use widely. “There’s never been a better time t be a fruit breeder r a vegetable breeder because we have mre tls and techniques,” says Susan Brwn, an apple breeder at Crnell University.
Sme cmpanies are beginning t use thse tls t deal with the challenge f develping tastier vegetables. One cmpany, Pairwise, is fighting the same cmpunds that trubled Brussels spruts: glucsinlates. But this time researchers are imprving the flavr f salad greens.
All vegetable grwers hpe that mre flavrful prducts n stre shelves will cnvince peple t cnsume the recmmended allwances (推荐量) f fruits and vegetables — and d s better than decades f nutritinal guidance have. “Dn’t waste yur time talking abut trying t educate peple t eat better,” said Harry Klee, a prfessr wh specializes in tmat breeding. “Just give them prducts that taste better and that they want t eat.”
28. Why did plant breeders grw ld Brussels sprut seeds?
A. T find ut why Brussels spruts are bitter.
B. T find the less bitter versins f Brussels spruts.
C. T study the specific chemicals f Brussels spruts.
D. T select high-yielding versins f Brussels spruts.
29. What des the underlined wrd “fared” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. PrfitedB. Emerged.C. Survived.D. Succeeded.
30. What can we learn frm Susan Brwn’s wrds in paragraph 4?
A. Fruit and vegetable breeding techniques are bming.
B. Fruit and vegetable breeding techniques need n further imprvement.
C. Fruit and vegetable breeders are struggling t develp new species.
D. Fruit and vegetable breeders shuld develp new genetic technlgy.
31. Which is the best way t get peple t eat mre fruits and vegetables accrding t Harry Klee?
A. Enhancing the taste f vegetables and fruits.
B. Making vegetables and fruits mre affrdable fr peple.
C. Imprving the nutritinal cntent f vegetables and fruits.
D. Educating peple abut the benefits f vegetables and fruits.
D
Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. The teaching methd imprves memrizatin f separate facts, prceeding frm ne textbk chapter t the next withut necessarily making cnnectins between them, instead f learning hw t use the infrmatin and cnnect thse facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we develped a series f crss-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bilgy curses. We asked them t identify cnnectins between the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals, clams and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge t explaining the bilgical phenmena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science curses and hw well prepared they are t apply that infrmatin.
The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn’t have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it’s the basis f science literacy (科学素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.
What des the existing science educatin fail t d accrding t the research?
A. Extend students’ theretical knwledge.
B. Engage students in mre utdr activities.
C. Encurage students t enjy the learning prcess.
D. Teach students t make cnnectins amng different subjects.
33. What can we learn abut the student interviewees?
A. They have rich academic knwledge.
B. They pay little attentin t bilgy curses.
C. They hardly identify the cre ideas f science.
D. They fully understand their majr’s imprtance.
34. The activity abut cean acidificatin expects students t _____________________.
A. analyse the exact cmpsitin f sea water.
B. study sme unusual phenmena under the sea.
C. cme up with practical methds t prtect sea life.
D. explain the effects f carbn dixide n sea creatures.
35. What des the authr see frm the result f the study?
A. The need t remve the unfairness in educatin.
B. The difficulties f crss-disciplinary study.
C. The ptential t prmte students’ science literacy.
D. The methd f increasing students’ practical skills.
