Prfessr Evan Risk, f the Department f Psychlgy at the University f Waterl, led a recent study where the team asked abut 100 participants (参与者) a series f general-knwledge questins, such as naming the capital f France. Fr half f the study, participants had access t the Internet. They had t lk up the answer when they respnded that they did nt knw the answer. In the ther half f the study, participants did nt have access t the Internet.
The team fund that the peple wh had access t the web were abut 5 percent mre likely t say that they did nt knw the answer t the questin. Furthermre, in sme cases, the peple with access t the Internet reprted feeling as thugh they knew less cmpared t the peple withut access.
“With the ppularity f the Internet, we are almst frequently cnnected t large amunts f infrmatin. And when that data is within reach, peple seem less likely t rely n their wn knwledge,” said Prfessr Risk.
Studying the results, the researchers thught that access t the Internet might make it less acceptable t say yu knw smething but are incrrect. It is als pssible that participants were mre likely t say they didn’t knw an answer when they had access t the web because nline searching ffers an pprtunity t cnfirm their answer, and the prcess f finding ut the answer is rewarding.
“Our results suggest that access t the Internet affects the decisins we make abut what we knw and dn’t knw,” said Risk. “We hpe this research helps us understand hw easy access t large amunts f infrmatin can influence ur thinking and behaviur.”
