One f the greatest challenges in caring fr such intelligent animals as chimpanzees(猩猩)is prviding them with enriching experiences. Every day, the chimpanzees at Prject Chimps receive mrning and evening fd-based enrichment devices, but caregivers are always lking fr mre ways t keep the chimps mentally engaged. With 79 chimpanzees, each with their distinctive persnality, care staff ften find that different chimps react differently t new enrichment.
Last year, we began inviting musicians t perfrm fr chimps t see what they may respnd. A
vilin perfrmance received quite the respnse. Additinal musicians were lined up t visit but the crnavirus has stpped the activities, which we hpe t resume in the near future.
This past week, we brught an electric pian fr the chimps t investigate. Sme chimps, like
twins Buttercup and Clarisse, were immediately interested and culd nt wait t tap ut a few ntes. Others, like Emma, were mre interested in trying t take it apart.
29- year-ld Precius has very little tlerance fr the pian. She sat ff t the side fr a few
minutes, but eventually she decided that was enugh. She called an end t the enrichment sessin by thrwing a handful f waste at the pian. Receiving her message lud and clear, we remved the pian.
We culd never have guessed hw 33-year-ld Luke wuld react t it. As with many retired lab
chimpanzees, Luke has sme anxiety issues. He seems particularly distrustful f anything new, including peple, fd, and enrichment. But when we presented the chimps with the pian, Luke was the first t investigate. We culd nt believe ur eyes—this usually anxius chimpanzee bravely chse t explre smething new!

Breaking was riginally part f early hip-hp culture in New Yrk in the 1970s. In the decades
since, it has spread glbally, enjying huge ppularity beynd the US and particularly acrss Eurpe and Asia. Thugh breaking is ften categrized as a style f street dance, it mre easily lends itself t the field f sprts than ther styles fr the cmpetitive nature.
“Back in the Brnx in New Yrk, when it first started, it was always neighbrhds f kids just
battling each ther,” 26-year-ld break-dancer Victr Mntalv tld USA Tday. “That's hw they did it back in the day.”

Fr tday’s intercnnected fd supply chains, “efficient” is what it’s suppsed t be: Each cuntry specializes in what it’s best at and puts it n the glbal market. Prducers and prcessrs within cuntries specialize, t, as a way t minimize csts. As a result, at least in thery, prices stay lw, the wrld gets fed and everyne wins.
Hwever, the COVID-19 crisis demnstrates what is wrng with this apprach. When barriers
prevent fd frm reaching its markets, r demand suddenly drps — bth f which are happening nw — the system falls apart. Belgium, a leading exprter f ptates, lst sales n the dmestic and
verseas markets because f lckdwns(封锁). At least the Belgians can try t eat the ptates at
hme. That strategy wn't wrk fr every crp: Ghana, the wrld’s tp cca exprter, lst markets when peple fcused n buying essential items instead f chclate.
The lss in exprt incme in Africa mre generally culd have a huge impact if the COVID-19
crisis cntinues, as many cuntries there rely heavily n imprted(进口) grains. The prices f these
grains have rcketed nt nly because f rising demand fr these grains during the crisis, but als because a few cuntries — including Russia and Vietnam — carried ut exprt restrictins ut f fear that sending fd abrad wuld lead t higher prices dmestically.
Seeing the spiled prducts acrss the wrld shuld frce all f us t rethink ur “efficient” fd
supplies. We need t rejuvenate(使恢复活力)lcal and reginal fd systems t reduce the
vulnerabilities that cme with being relying t much n imprted fds. This desn’t mean cutting ff all trade r ablishing all packaged fds, but it des mean building diversity, and increasing
pprtunities fr small and medium-scale enterprises t flurish in shrter, mre sustainable(可持续
的) fd supply chains that are clser t hme. Fr gvernments arund the wrld, it shuld be the place t start.
In thery, specializatin f the fd system ________.
A. adapts t changes efficiently B. balances supply and demand
C. fcuses n essential items D. reduces csts f prductin
The underlined wrd “vulnerabilities” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

What can we learn frm the passage?

Grain prices rise due t Africa’s dependence n imprtatin.
