Jamie Gldfarb had finished reading the last bedtime bk t her three-year-ld sn, Kai, when he tld her he was hungry. The mum usually cmplied with such requests since Kai had difficulty feeding as a baby. But this time, as she headed dwnstairs t fetch a banana, she heard him murmur, “Nw that’s hw yu get a furth bk.”
Gldfarb was astnished that her sweet child wuld tell her a lie, but experts wuld say that Kai was engaging in cmplicated cgnitive reasning (认知推理) in his successful attempt fr extra strytime. And accrding t researchers, lying prvides a rich wrkut fr develping brains.
Thugh experts agree that there’s n particular area in the brain leading t telling lies, certain regins f the brain are engaged during the cnstructin f a lie. The brain must als juggle (兼顾) emtins, memries, and knwledge abut anther persn, as well as think abut alternative paths the lie culd take. “It’s really a whle netwrk f cmplex interactins (互动),” says US psychlgist Immrdin-Yang. And that’s why the ability t lie develps ver time, as a yung brain develps.
Starting arund tw years ld, a child is prbably ging t tell his first lie t keep frm getting in truble — and he prbably wn’t be very gd at it. Older preschl-age children tend t try t lie as a way t make themselves lk better. “They may claim they did smething that they didn’t d because they want t get praise, r they exaggerate (夸张) because they want the parent t think, ‘Oh ww, yu’re amazing,’” says Victria Talwar, authr f the bk The Truth Abut Lying. As children enter elementary schl, their mre-develped brains can craft mre cmplex lies.
Parents might feel disappinted when they catch their children being untruthful, but experts advise aviding shaming them — r calling them liars. “That wn’t necessarily prmte the behaviur yu want,” Talwar says. Instead, she suggests parents fcus n the behaviur they’d like a child t exhibit and use language that encurages truth-telling. When the lie is mre invlved, experts recmmend having a direct cnversatin abut it.
8. What d the underlined wrds “cmplied with” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Let dwn.B. Relied n.C. Gave in t.D. Made use f.
9. What can we learn abut telling lies frm paragraph 3?
A. It is unavidable in children’s life.
B. It is based n cmplex brain activities.
C. It is cntrlled by a specific area in the brain.
D. It is likely t hld back the develpment f brains.
10. What is the main reasn why lder preschl-age children lie?
A. T have fun.B. T prtect thers.
C. T win praise.D. T avid getting in truble.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A Suggestins n slving children’s lies.
B. Pssible harm t children if they are called liars.
C. Influence f children’s lies n parent-child relatinships.
D. Relatinships between children’s telling lies and their daily behaviur.
