In an age when most Chinese people thought that a lunar eclipse (月食) was a sign of angry gods, Wang Zhenyi (1768-1797), an astronomer and mathematician who worked tirelessly to publish her discoveries about space, said, “Actually, it’s definitely because of the Moon.”
Wang was born at a time when feudal (封建的) customs in China prevented girls from getting a formal education. However, she was fortunate that her family encouraged her in learning. Her grandfather, a former district governor, shared his knowledge of astronomy with her, while her father, a medicinal scholar, taught her basic math. Despite being denied formal education, Wang was determined to learn and became self-taught, studying a vast collection of books on various subjects.
One of Wang’s most famous demonstrations involved creating a model to explain a lunar eclipse. After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow. Her article The Explanation of a Lunar Eclipse is still considered highly accurate for its time.
During the Qing dynasty, the Western calendar was introduced to China. Wang argued for its adoption because it was based on the movement of the Sun. Many Chinese scholars rejected the idea for it had come from the West, to which Wang simply responded, “What counts is the usefulness, no matter whether it is Chinese or Western.”
To make math and science accessible to common people, she spent years publishing articles hoping to make these ancient and poorly understood concepts easier to digest. She explained the rotation (旋转) of the planets, and even the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理) for beginners.
Unfortunately, most of Wang Zhenyi’s works have not passed the test of time, but her contributions continue to be recognized in modern times. In 1994, the International Astronomical Union named a crater (环形山) on Venus after her. Wang’s legacy continues to inspire and encourage future generations to pursue knowledge and innovation.”
    4. Why was it difficult for Wang to receive a formal education?
    A. Her family emphasizes her self-taught education.
    B. Her family encourage her to follow feudal customs.
    C. She came from a upper class family with a good schooling.
    D. She lived in a time when girls were not allowed to attend school.
    5. Which of the following best describe Wang’s personalities?
    A. She was dependent and curious. B. She was intelligent and open-minded.
    C. She was determined and narrow-minded. D. She was hard-working and emotional.
    6. Wang’s contributions include all the following except ______.
    A. introducing the Western calendar to China.
    B. arguing for the adoption of the Western calendar.
    C. translating complex theories into simple concepts.
    D. explaining a lunar eclipse using simple everyday objects.
    7. What is one way that Wang’s legacy is recognized to inspire future generations?
    A. Her books are widely read today.
    B. A lunar crater was named Wang Zhenyi.
    C. A crater on Venus was named after her.
    D. She was awarded a Prize for determination after death.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第二段中“Wang was born at a time when feudal (封建的) customs in China prevented girls from getting a formal education.(王生于中国封建习俗禁止女孩接受正规教育的时代。)”
根据第三段中“After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow. (在查阅了几十年的天文记录后,她用一盏灯、一面镜子和一张圆桌分别代表太阳、月亮和地球。通过移动物体,她能够表明月食发生时,月球正好经过地球后面,并移动到它的阴影。)”可推知,王贞仪很聪明,根据第四段中“Many Chinese scholars rejected the idea for it had come from the West, to which Wang simply responded, “What counts is the usefulness, no matter whether it is Chinese or Western.”(许多中国学者拒绝接受这种来自西方的观点,对此,王只是回答说:“重要的是有用性,不管是中国的还是西方的。”)”
根据第四段中“During the Qing dynasty, the Western calendar was introduced to China. (清朝时,西历传入中国。)”可知,文章只说西历传入中国,并没有说是王贞仪引进的,所以A项“将西历引入中国。”不是她的贡献,根据第四段中“Wang argued for its adoption because it was based on the movement of the Sun. (王主张采用这种方法(西历),因为它是基于太阳的运动。)”可知,B项“主张采用西历。”是她的贡献,根据倒数第二段中“To make math and science accessible to common people, she spent years publishing articles hoping to make these ancient and poorly understood concepts easier to digest. (为了让数学和科学更容易为普通人所接受,她花了数年时间发表文章,希望让这些古老而难以理解的概念更容易消化。)”可知,C项“将复杂的理论转化为简单的概念。”是她的贡献,根据第三段“After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow.(在查阅了几十年的天文记录后,她用一盏灯、一面镜子和一张圆桌分别代表太阳、月亮和地球。通过移动物体,她能够表明月食发生时,月球正好经过地球后面,并移动到它的阴影。)”可知,D项“用简单的日常用品解释月食。”是她的贡献,故选A。
    【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In 1994, the International Astronomical Union named a crater (环形山) on Venus after her.( 1994年,国际天文联会以她的名字命名了金星上的一个陨石坑。)”
    C
Have you ever taken a selfie (自拍照) and thought, “Why do I look so weird (奇怪的)?” The reason may be because photos show us the reverse (相反) of what we see in the mirror. When we take a photo of ourselves using the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures our face as others see it. This can be a little weird because our faces are not perfectly symmetrical, and certain features don’t line up in photos the same way they do in the mirror.
In addition to the reverse image issue, our tendency to like what we’re familiar with also plays a role. We are most familiar with our faces as we see them in the mirror, so we come to prefer that mirror image. According to the mere exposure theory, repeatedly encountering something makes us like it more. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side, or the angle that seems most attractive to us.
“You have that familiarity, which breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face,” said Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center.
New York-based photographer Michael Levy expanded on Rutledge’s point. He noted that when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side — that is, the angle that seems most attractive to us.
Furthermore, when we see our faces in the mirror, we are looking at ourselves in motion, as opposed to completely still in a photo. We tend to notice a lot more details in a still photo, and different camera lenses and a person’s distance to the camera can also change the way people look in photos.
But ultimately, the way we appear in photos is the way we look to the rest of the world, and studies have shown that other people generally like the version of us they see, as opposed to the image we see of ourselves. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. So go forth and selfie.
    8. Why do people sometimes appear “weird” in selfies, according to the article?
    A. Because selfies are often taken in bad lighting.
    B. Because they are not standing at the correct angle.
    C. Because selfies show a reversed image of the face.
    D. Because people tend to overthink their appearance in selfies.
    9. According to the article, what is the mere exposure theory?
    A. A theory about how people like what they see in the mirror.
    B. A theory about how people prefer certain angles in photographs.
    C. A theory about how people tend to focus on details in still photographs.
    D. A theory about how repeated exposure to something makes people like it more.
    10. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To provide tips for better selfies.
    B. To Promoting self-acceptance in photos.
    C. To explain differences in appearance between photos and mirrors.
    D. To explore factors behind preference for mirror images over photo images.
    11. How does the author support his explanations for the phenomenon of why we look different in selfies and mirrors?
    A. By providing statistical data and graphs. B. By comparing selfies and mirror images.
    C. By using questions and persuasive language. D. By citing scientific studies and experts’ opinions.
C 9. D 10. D 11. D
根据第一段“Have you ever taken a selfie (自拍照) and thought, “Why do I look so weird (奇怪的)?” The reason may be because photos show us the reverse (相反) of what we see in the mirror. (你有没有在自拍的时候想过:“为什么我看起来这么奇怪?”原因可能是因为照片向我们展示的是我们在镜子里看到的东西的反面)”可知,人们在自拍时有时会显得“奇怪”是因为自拍照显示的是脸部的反向图像。故选C。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“According to the mere exposure theory, repeatedly encountering something makes us like it more. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side, or the angle that seems most attractive to us. (根据单纯暴露理论,反复遇到某样东西会让我们更喜欢它。当我们照镜子时,我们倾向于关注我们认为好的一面,或者最吸引我们的角度)”可知,单纯暴露理论指的是反复接触某物会使人更喜欢它的理论。故选D。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In addition to the reverse image issue, our tendency to like what we’re familiar with also plays a role.
根据第三段““You have that familiarity, which breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face,” said Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center. (“你有了那种熟悉感,就会产生好感。媒体心理学研究中心主任帕梅拉·拉特利奇说:“你已经对自己的脸形成了偏好。”)”;第四段“New York-based photographer Michael Levy expanded on Rutledge’s point. (纽约摄影师Michael Levy进一步阐述了Rutledge的观点)”可推知,作者引用科学研究和专家的意见支持他对“为什么我们在自拍和照镜子时看起来不一样”这一现象的解释。故选D。
    D
We all follow pretty much the same pattern with any skill we learn, from baking a pie to writing a descriptive paragraph. We typically start with a general idea and receive instruction before practicing to reach an acceptable level of performance, and then let it become automatic. However, once we reach this point, we often stop improving. People often misunderstand this because they assume that their continued baking or writing is a form of practice and that they are bound to get better at it as long as they keep doing it.
Research has shown that additional years of “practice” may not lead to improvement and can even result in a decline in performance. So what do you need if you are not satisfied with this automated level of performance? Purposeful practice turns out to be a successful approach.
Purposeful practice has several characteristics that set it apart from what we might call “naive practice, ” which is essentially just doing something repeatedly, and expecting that the repetition alone will improve one’s performance.
First of all, purposeful practice has well-defined, specific goals. It is all about putting a bunch of baby steps together to reach a longer-term goal.
Furthermore, purposeful practice involves feedback. You have to know whether you are doing something right and, if not, how you may be going about it the wrong way. Without feedback—either from yourself or from outside observers—you cannot figure out what you need to improve on or how close you are to achieving your goals.
Purposeful practice also requires getting out of one’s comfort zone, which means trying to do something that you couldn’t do before. This is perhaps the most important part of purposeful practice. Sometimes you may find it easy to accomplish that new thing, and then you keep pushing on. At other times, however, you run into something that stops you cold. The best way to get past any barrier is to come at it from a different direction, which is one reason why it is useful to work with a teacher or coach.
    12. What is the author’s attitude towards aimless continued practice?
    A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
    13. What does the word “naive practice” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Practice that involves specific goals and feedback.
    B. Practice repeatedly will improve one’s performance.
    C. Practice that involves getting out of one’s comfort zone.
    D. Practice that is only about repetition without improvement goals.
    14. What does the last paragraph imply?
    A. Feedback is not necessary for purposeful practice.
    B. Purposeful practice involves getting out of one’s comfort zone.
    C. Purposeful practice requires a teacher or coach to help overcome barriers.
    D. Purposeful practice involves doing something repeatedly without specific goals.
    15. Which is the best title for the text?
    A. The Shortcut to Success B. Not All Practice Makes Perfect
    C. Automation Makes Satisfaction D. The Challenges of Learning a New Skill
B 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第一段“People often misunderstand this because they assume that their continued baking or writing is a form of practice and that they are bound to get better at it as long as they keep doing it.(人们经常误解这一点,因为他们认为持续的烘焙或写作是一种练习,只要他们坚持做下去,他们一定会做得更好)”以及第二段“Research has shown that additional years of “practice” may not lead to improvement and can even result in a decline in performance.(研究表明,额外的多年“练习”可能不会带来进步,甚至可能导致表现下降)”可推知,作者对漫无目的的继续练习是否定态度。
根据画线词后文“which is essentially just doing something repeatedly, and expecting that the repetition alone will improve one’s performance”可推知,“原始练习”本质上只是重复做某件事,并期望重复本身会提高一个人的表现。
根据最后一段“Purposeful practice also requires getting out of one’s comfort zone, which means trying to do something that you couldn’t do before. This is perhaps the most important part of purposeful practice. Sometimes you may find it easy to accomplish that new thing, and then you keep pushing on. At other times, however, you run into something that stops you cold. The best way to get past any barrier is to come at it from a different direction, which is one reason why it is useful to work with a teacher or coach.(有目的的练习也需要走出一个人的舒适区,这意味着尝试做一些你以前不能做的事情。这也许是有目的练习中最重要的部分。有时候你可能会发现完成新事物很容易,然后你继续前进。然而,在其他时候,你会遇到一些让你措手不及的事情。克服任何障碍的最好方法是从不同的方向出发,这就是为什么与老师或教练一起工作很有用的一个原因)”可推知,最后一段暗示了有目的的练习需要老师或教练帮助克服障碍。故选C。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Research has shown that additional years of “practice” may not lead to improvement and can even result in a decline in performance. So what do you need if you are not satisfied with this automated level of performance? Purposeful practice turns out to be a successful approach.(研究表明,额外的多年“练习”可能不会带来进步,甚至可能导致表现下降。

    Finders Keepers
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. It was a short distance, so I knew they were safe and no trouble would befall (降临) them.
One warm spring day, a cute puppy (小狗) followed them home after school. When my husband got home that evening, she climbed into his lap to watch TV. The girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time the girls took responsibility for another life.
The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was pleading (恳求) for the return of a lost puppy in the vicinity (附近) of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly tucked (把……塞进) the paper away in the closet. There was only one problem: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our puppy was the one they were desperately seeking.
It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Finally, with sweaty palms (手掌), I lifted the receiver and dialed. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but someone did. The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she wanted to come right over.
    注意:
    1. 续写的词数应为150左右;
    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
    Paragraph 1:
Within minutes she was at my door and I asked her to come in.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Opening the door, I noticed a little girl in the car with a small wheelchair next to her.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Within minutes she was at my door and I asked her to come in. One look at the puppy and the woman’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Here, Lucy,” she called. “Come to Mamma.” Lucy instantly obeyed, wagging her tail in delight at the sound of the woman’s voice. Obviously, she belonged to the woman. I felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest. I wanted to grab the dog and run. Instead, I smiled faintly. After some chat, it was time for them to go home.
Opening the door, I noticed a little girl in the car with a small wheelchair next to her. When the child saw the puppy, a bright smile spread across her face. The woman saw me look at the chair and offered an explanation. Lucy was given to her daughter to promote emotional healing after a car accident. When Lucy disappeared, the little girl had gone into a deep depression, refusing to come out of the shell she was in. Suddenly I felt very guilty for my selfishness and the terrible time they had been through. I knew I had done the right thing--that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
