One f the mst deeply-rted myths in parenting is the s-called Mzart effect, which says that listening t music by the Austrian cmpser Wlfgang Amadeus Mzart can increase a child’s intelligence. The idea has been prmted by advcates fr arts educatin and by retailers(零售商) wh sell special recrdings f Mzart’s wrks fr infants(婴儿) and tddlers(学步的儿童). Sme pregnant wmen have even gne s far as t play Mzart recrdings n headphnes pressed against their bellies.
S, if yu have kids r yu’re expecting t have them, hw seriusly shuld yu take the Mzart effect? Will the child wh has n access t Mzart s music when brn live a life f medicrity(平庸)? Relax. There is n scientific evidence that listening t Mzart imprves children’s cgnitive abilities.
The whle idea came frm a small study dne in 1993 which fund that cllege students wh listened t Mzart’s Snata fr Tw Pians in D Majr (K 448) shwed slight imprvement in a test f spatial reasning( 空间推理). This finding was later turned int smething unrealistic by the musician and entrepreneur(企业家) Dn Campbell, wh in 1997 published the best seller The Mzart Effect: Tapping the Pwer f Music t Heal the Bdy, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlck the Creative Spirit. Campbell’s claims abut the amazing pwer f Mzart s music was repeated endlessly in the media and sped up the enthusiasm fr Mzart-based enrichment activities.
Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mzart bsts intelligence and fund n evidence fr it. The riginal experiment with cllege students was reviewed in 1999, and the increase in the students’ spatial skills was fund t be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry f Educatin and Research cmmissined a team f experts t examine the scientific literature regarding Mzart and child develpment, and they fund n reasn t believe that it bsted intelligence.

An artificial skin is even better than human skin at sensing bjects, because it can detect and identify items that it hasn’t tuched yet.
Even withut tuching an bject, Wang and his clleagues’ artificial skin can sense if it is clse by and can als figure ut sme clues abut the type f material it is made f.
The skin is made up f tw uter layers f cnductive fabric(导电织物) cvered with nickel(镍) t serve as electrdes(电极). These surrund a prus spnge(多空海绵), saked(浸泡) in inic(离子) liquid, which acts as a cnduit(导管) fr electricity. The tw layers act as a capacitr(电容器), string electrical energy in an electric field.
The sensing perfrmance f the capacitr, which W ang claims is between 10 and 100 times mre sensitive than a standard capacitr, means it is als able t detect very minr changes in the electric field arund the skin, allwing it t sense when bjects are near. What’s mre, thse subtle changes can help it identify what type f material a nearby bject is made f.
“The prcess is relatively simple. As the cmpnent cmes clse t cntact, it enters the edges f the electric field f the capacitive structure,” says Jnathan Aitken at the University f Sheffield, UK. “There are several interesting future rutes,” he says, but at present the skin relies n machine learning techniques t identify hw the bject it detects cmpared with data n knwn materials.
Wang thinks the skin culd wrk n a rbtic finger t allw factry rbts t better understand which bjects t pick up and which t leave withut having t grasp them, as well as being useful fr prstheses(假体).
8. What might be the functin f the artificial skin?
A. It can tell the clr f an bject.
B. It can figure ut the material f an bject.
C. It is far better than the human skin in every way.
D. It can nly detect and identify items that it has tuched.
9. What d yu knw abut the sensing perfrmance f the capacitr?
A. It can tell the exact distance f an bject.
B. It can sense the bject even it is nt near.
C. It is much mre sensitive than a standard capacitr.
D. It can sense very big changes in the electric field arund the skin.
10. What can yu infer frm Jnathan Aitken’s wrds?
A The future rutes f the skin is limited.
B. The skin will be applied t varius fields.
C. The artificial skin still has rm fr imprvement.
D. At present the skin relies n itself t identify hw the bject it detects.
11. What might be the best title f the passage?
A. Artificial skin: the future skin f rbts.
B. Artificial skin: a new breakthrugh in space.
C. Artificial skin: a perfect alternative t human skin.
D. Artificial skin: detect nearby bjects withut even tuching them.
D
In 2016, Luncz and her clleagues realized that Brazilian capuchins (卷尾猴) prduced stne flakes (小薄片) frm the rcks they used t pund (击打) fd and dig withut necessarily meaning t. It made the team wnder whether the artefacts (人工制品) really reflected any technical planning by thse early humans.
Since then, Luncz and her clleagues have been studying tl use in lng-tailed macaques (猕猴) n the islands f Phang Nga Bay in Thailand (泰国的攀牙湾). The team set up mtin-activated cameras (动作感应摄像头) t study the behaviur f the wild macaques. During 100 hurs f ftage (镜头),the team witnessed mnkeys accidentally creating flakes as they struck nuts between tw stnes and then leaving the brken stnes t find new, whle stnes.
This is almst exactly what the capuchins did in the earlier study. The team then cmpared 1119 stne flakes frm the macaques’ nut-cracking sites with artefacts fund at hminin (古人类) sites in Ethipia, Kenya and Tanzania. The mnkeys’ thin, flat, wide stne flakes—ranging frm 1.3 t 7.9 centimetres in length—were “almst the same” with flakes that were assciated with ancient humans up t 3.3 millin years ag, says Tms Prffitt, anther member f the research team at the Max Planck Institute fr Evlutinary Anthrplgy.
The findings culd challenge the current understanding f early stne technlgy, says Prffitt. “I wuldn’t g s far as t say that all f the ld material is nt intentinal,” he says. “But what ur study shws is that we can’t be 100 per cent certain that every single flake in the early Stne Age archaelgical recrd was intentinally made. There may be a cmpnent within that recrd that’s unintentinal.”
12. What did Luncz and her clleagues realize in 2016?
A. Brazilian capuchins used the stne flakes t ck fd.
B. Brazilian capuchins culd make artefacts like humans.
C. Brazilian capuchins didn’t prduce stne flakes frm the rcks n purpse.
D. Brazilian capuchins were mre capable f prducing stne flakes than early humans.
13. What might capuchins d in the earlier study?
A. They kept the brken stnes fr future use.
B. They created flakes when they searched fr fd.
C. They were desperate t find new, whle stnes t make stne tls.
D. They accidentally created flakes as they struck nuts between tw stnes.
14. What did the team find ut after they made the cmparisn in Paragraph 3?
A. The mnkeys’ flakes were assciated with ancient humans.
B. The flakes used by hminins were actually made by mnkeys.
C. The mnkeys’ stne flakes ranged frm 1.3 t 7.9 centimetres in width.
D. The mnkeys’ stne flakes were quite similar t thse frm early humans.
15. What d yu knw frm the last paragraph?
A. All f the ld stne material was unintentinal.
B. We culd be sure t say all the flakes were made ut f purpse.
C. The findings cnfirmed the current understanding f early stne technlgy.
D. Sme flakes in the early Stne Age archaelgical recrd might be unintentinal.
