Scientists in the Netherlands have trained bees t identify COVID-19 thrugh their sense f smell, accrding t a press release frm Wageningen University. The research was cnducted n mre than 150 bees in Wageningen University’s research lab.
The scientists trained the bees by giving them a treat — a sugar-water slutin — every time they were expsed (暴露于) t the smell f samples (样本) infected with COVID-19. Each time the bees were expsed t a nn-infected sample, they wuldn’t get a reward. Eventually, the bees culd identify an infected sample within a few secnds — and wuld then stick ut their tngues like clckwrk t cllect the sugar water.
Bees aren’t the first animals t detect COVID-19 by smell. Researchers have als trained dgs t tell the difference between psitive and negative COVID-19 samples frm human saliva (唾液) r sweat with fairly high levels f accuracy. A German study fund that dgs culd identify psitive COVID-19 samples 94% f the time. That’s because the crnavirus (冠状病毒) makes an infected persn’s bdy smell slightly different frm thse f a nn-infected persn. But researchers still aren’t sure whether animals are the best bet fr smelling ut COVID-19 cases utside the lab.
“N ne is saying they can replace a PCR machine, but they culd be very prmising,” Hlger Vlk, a neurlgist, tld Nature. PCR machines are what lab technicians use t prcess standard COVID-19 tests. At the very least, certain animals culd be useful fr identifying COVID-19 in places r cuntries in which high-tech lab equipment is nt enugh r inaccessible.
Wageningen scientists are wrking n a machine that can train bees at nce. Then bees can use their skills t test fr crnavirus aersls (气溶胶) in the surrunding envirnment.
28. Hw did the researchers teach the bees t identify COVID-19?
A. By ffering bees sme rewards. B. By infecting bees with the virus.
C. By raising bees with sugar water. D. By expsing bees t infected humans.
29. Why are dgs able t find ut psitive COVID-19 samples?
A. They can watch fr the hidden virus.
B. They have a sharp sense f smell.
C. They can feel samples’ inner changes.

30. What is the fllw-up task f Wageningen scientists?
A. T keep track f mre bees. B. T detect crnavirus aersls.
C. T help underdevelped cuntries. D. T develp a new type f machine.
31. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Dgs: Well-trained PCR machines
B. Bees: Prmising COVID-19 detectrs
C. Hlger Vlk: A fighter against COVID-19
D. Wageningen University: A leader in keeping bees

A machine can nw nt nly beat yu at chess, it can als utperfrm yu in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisc, a sftware prgram called Prject Debater beat its human cmpetitrs, including Na Ovadia, Israel’s frmer natinal debating champin.
Brilliant thugh it is, Prject Debater has sme weaknesses. It takes sentences frm its library f dcuments and prebuilt arguments and strings them tgether. This can lead t the kinds f mistakes n human wuld make. Such mistakes will n dubt be irned ut, yet they als pint t a vital prblem. As Kristian Hammnd, prfessr f electrical engineering and cmputer science at Nrthwestern University, put it: “There’s never a stage at which the system knws what it’s talking abut.”
What Hammnd is referring t is the questin f meaning, and meaning is central t what makes the least intelligent f humans different frm the mst intelligent f machines. A cmputer wrks with symbls. Its prgram specifies (明确规定) a set f rules t transfrm ne string f symbls nt anther. But it des nt specify what thse symbls mean. Indeed, t a cmputer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans, in thinking, talking, reading and writing, als wrk with symbls. But fr humans, meaning is everything. When we cmmunicate, we cmmunicate meaning. What matters is nt just the utside f a string f symbls, but the inside t, nt just hw they are arranged but what they mean.
Meaning becmes knwn thrugh a prcess f scial interactin (相互作用), nt f cmputatin, interactin that shapes the cntent f the symbls in ur heads. The rules that decide meaning lie nt just inside ur heads, but als utside, in sciety, in scial memry, scial custms and scial relatins. It is this that tells humans and machines apart. And that’s why, hwever shcking Prject Debater may seem, the traditin that began with Scrates and Cnfucius will nt end with artificial intelligence.
32. Why des the authr mentin Na Ovadia in the first paragraph?
A. T explain the use f a sftware prgram.
B. T shw the cleverness f Prject Debater.
C. T intrduce the designer f Prject Debater.
D. T emphasize the fairness f the cmpetitin.
33. What is Prject Debater unable t d accrding t Hammnd?
A. Create rules.B. Talk fluently.
C. Understand meaning.D. Identify difficult wrds.
34. What can be inferred abut the future f human traditin?
A. It will g against AI.B. It will be passed dwn.
C. It will definitely disappear.D. It will be written int prgrams.
35. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. Scial interactin is key t understanding symbls.
B. Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future.
C. Ancient philsphers set gd examples fr debaters.
D. The human brain has mre t be develped.
