W: Not any more. We’ve moved to Eastgate.
M: Eastgate! That’s twenty kilometres from here!
W: Yeah, I know. So I’ve got a long drive to work these days. But we bought a really big house with a nice garden.
M: Great! You’re a landscape gardener, aren’t you? So you’d be working much more in the summer.
W: Uh huh. But actually I’ve been working as a city planner for the last year or so.
M: Oh... Why did you change jobs?
W: Well... Two years ago I was working so hard that I never had any time to be with my kids. They were growing up really quickly, but I was always driving around from one project to the next. So I was hardly ever spending time at home.
M: Well, it’s better now, I expect. You’re working for the city, I suppose.
W: You mean in the planning department? No, actually I’m running my own company.

【答案】17.B 18.A 19.B 20.A
M: Hello everyone and welcome to the garden seminar. We all know that plants grow well in warm and sunny places, but we aren’t all lucky enough to live somewhere like that. Bill and Sally Jones live in a high, windy area — not ideal for gardening — but they are also champion vegetable growers. How do they do it? Well, we all know that vegetables need plenty of water — not just a few drops or a few pints, but gallons of it. It rains a lot where the Jones family live, so they have a good water supply. It’s also very open, so they get enough sunlight. The real enemy is the wind. They tried different ways of protecting the plants — planting trees for shelter and building fences — but what they use now for the more delicate plants are glass houses. With several of these they are able to grow plants which would not normally survive in their location. By adapting to the conditions in which they live, Bill and Sally have developed a winning way with their crops. And their experience can serve as a lesson for other growers who experience similar difficulties.

French writer Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature on Oct 6. She is the first French female to win the prize.
In the words of the Nobel committee, Ernaux was given the award “for the courage and clinical acuity (敏锐的洞察力) of her writing”. Having spent over 50 years as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books. Rather than consider herself a writer of fiction, Ernaux has used the term “an ethnologist (民族学者) of herself”.
Born in 1940 in a village in Normandy, France, Ernaux grew up in a working-class environment. Her parents ran a combined grocery store and cafe. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer.
Two books by other French writers inspired her to be a writer: The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu. The former led her to write about feminism, and the latter raised her awareness of the huge gap between her and the environment she grew up in. Besides her reading influences, her “upbringing and experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood” also inspire many of her works, noted CNN.
Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always written in plain language. Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories objectively, “unshaped by florid (过多修饰的) description or overwhelming emotions”, noted Fox News.
“She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth. I mean, really hard experiences.” Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said after the award announcement in Stockholm.
24.What can we learn about Annie Ernaux?
A.She is the first French person to win the Nobel Prize in literature.
B.She was awarded for the courage and insights shown in her writing.
C.The Nobel committee described her as “an ethnologist of herself”.
D.She worked as a full-time writer right after graduation.
25.What does the underlined word “navigating” mean in paragraph 4?
A.find the right way to deal with B.be treated badly when someone was a child
C.educate people to be kind D.lose hope for the future
26.Which of the following best describes Ernaux’s writing style?
A.Plain and relaxing. B.Descriptive and serious.
C.Humorous and sharp. D.Objective and easy to understand.
27.Why is Annie Ernaux different from other writers, according to Anders Olsson?
A.She focuses on serious matters. B.She suffered a lot of hardships.
C.Her works are short and moving. D.Her works are about unexplored subjects.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.A
根据第二段“In the words of the Nobel committee, Ernaux was given the award “for the courage and clinical acuity (敏锐的洞察力) of her writing”.(用诺贝尔委员会的话说,埃诺被授予“她写作的勇气和敏锐”)”可知,安妮·埃诺因在写作中表现出的勇气和洞察力而获奖。故选B。
根据划线词上文“Two books by other French writers inspired her to be a writer: The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu. The former led her to write about feminism, and the latter raised her awareness of the huge gap between her and the environment she grew up in.(其他法国作家的两本书激励了她成为一名作家:西蒙娜·德·波伏娃的《第二性》和皮埃尔·布迪厄的《区别》。前者让她开始写女权主义,后者让她意识到自己与成长环境之间的巨大差距)”以及后文“adolescence and adulthood” also inspire many of her works”可知,本段主要在说明安妮的写作经历,她的阅读经历影响了她的作品,她正确处理成长经历、青春期和成年期的方式也激励了她许多作品。故划线词意思是“找到正确的方法来处理”。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories objectively, “unshaped by florid (过多修饰的) description or overwhelming emotions”, noted Fox News.(福克斯新闻指出,埃诺将她的风格描述为“平淡的写作”,她旨在客观地讲述她的故事,“不受华丽的描述或压倒性的情感的影响”)”可推知,埃诺的写作风格客观易懂。故选D。

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend(倾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don’t like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you prefer to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
28.According to the text, young people prefer to __________.
A.ask for advice before they really start to do anything
B.think in the same way as their parents do
C.be very strict with themselves
D.do things without thinking carefully ahead
29.Why do young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way?
A.Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
B.Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.
C.Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.
D.Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.
30.According to the text, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because _________.
A.they feel they are cleverer than old people
B.they do not want to get into trouble with their parents
C.they don’t feel they belong to the world of the old people
D.they want to show the new is better than the old
31.If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to __________.
A.do everything according to his own wish
B.hold himself responsible for everything he does
C.do everything beyond his parents’ control
D.do everything the way his parents do
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.B
根据第三段的“young people like to act right away without much thinking”可知,年轻人喜欢不加思考就马上行动。故选D。
根据第五段“ they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off (隔绝)from the older people’s world, 可知,年轻人并是不想制造麻烦,他们只是感觉跟年级大的人不在同一个世界里,与他们不同。由此可知,他们想尝试新东西,不同于老人。故选A。
根据第五段 “they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off (隔绝)from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted.”(他们无意制造任何麻烦;他们只是觉得自己与还没有被接受的老年人的世界隔绝了。)
根据最后一段“If you prefer to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.”(如果你喜欢控制你的生活,你最好赢得你的父母,并试着让他们理解你。

On the day he almost died, Kimbal Musk had food on the brain. The Internet startup talent and restaurateur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This made Musk think a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry—but beyond expanding his farm-to-table movement along with his restaurant, Musk hadn’t yet broken the code. Then he went sailing down a snowy slope (坡) and fell over, breaking his neck.
Musk eventually made a full recovery, but it involved spending two months on his back, which gave him plenty of time to come up with a plan. Since then, he has launched an initiative to put “learning gardens” in public schools across America; attracted Generation Z to the farming profession by changing shipping containers into high-tech, data-driven, year-round farms; and this year, is kicking off a new campaign to create one million at-home gardens.
Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people’s lives. “We were getting a lot of inquiries about gardening from people that had never gardened before,” says Musk. “People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to save money on groceries, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown.”
The program offers free garden kits that can be grown indoors or outdoors, and will be distributed through schools that Musk’s non-profit, Big Green, has already partnered with. It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons. “It’s not difficult. Anyone can do this, no matter where you come from, no matter where you live. We are all able to grow something,” says Musk.
32.What inspired Musk to make a difference to food industry?
A.The pandemic. B.A skiing accident.
C.Jamie Oliver’s speech. D.The farm-to-table movement.
33.What is a cause of people beginning gardening according to Musk?
A.To get access to healthy food.
B.To make their house beautiful.
C.To make money by selling garden produce.
D.To build up their strength during the pandemic.
34.What does the Million Gardens Movement focus on?
A.Encouraging people to preserve nature.
B.Providing free food for low-income families.
C.Promoting “learning gardens” across schools.
D.Educating new gardeners to grow their own food.
35.Which of the following best describes Musk?
A.Charity-minded. B.Stubborn. C.Easy-going. D.Scholarly.
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.D 35.A
根据文章第一段“The Internet startup talent and restaurateur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This made Musk think a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry(这位互联网创业天才和餐馆老板刚刚参加完Jackson Hole的一个会议抵达Jackson Hole,会上主厨Jamie Oliver谈到了健康饮食的好处。这让马斯克思考了很多——他如何能对食品行业作出改变)”可知Musk是在参加完Jamie Oliver的演讲之后开始考虑对食品行业作出改变,即受到了这个演讲的启发。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to save money on groceries, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown.(“人们之所以注意种植花园,原因有很多: 为了在杂货上省钱,为了改善饮食的营养质量,或者仅仅是为了消除封锁带来的无聊感。”)” A“To get access to healthy food(为了获得健康的食物)符合题意;其余三个选项文章并未提及;故选A项。
根据文章第三段“Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people’s lives.(旨在惠及低收入家庭的百万花园运动受到流行病的启发,因为渴望与自然建立更多联系的愿望和粮食的不安全一直处于许多人生活的最前沿。)”可知渴望与自然的联系和粮食安全问题是人们咨询百万花园运动的主要原因;根据文章最后一段“It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons. “It’s not difficult. Anyone can do this, no matter where you come from, no matter where you live. We are all able to grow something,” says Musk.(它还提供免费课程,介绍如何让花园生长以及在不断变化的生长季节提供新鲜种子和材料。“这并不难。任何人都可以做到这一点,无论你来自哪里,无论你住在哪里。 我们都能够种植一些东西,”马斯克说。)”可知,百万花园计划是专门教人自己种植的;与前面人们咨询百万花园运动的原因结合起来,可推断,百万花园重点是教人们如何种植自己吃的食物,使人们吃的食物更健康,并增加人与自然之间的联系。故选D项。

(2022秋·江苏苏州·高二苏州中学校考期中)How to be more organized
You’re in danger of missing a deadline, your important files are never where you thought they were, and it’s a lottery (彩票) whether you’ll even have clean clothes to wear tomorrow! Sound familiar? You can lose a great deal of time to disorganization. The more you can live and work in an organized way, the sooner you’ll change your habits for the better. 36 .
Celebrate small wins. For example, if you complete three things on your to-do list, treat yourself to a cup of coffee, or allow yourself 10 minutes of free time.
Use one calendar. If you record some things on your desk planner, and others on your email calendar, it’s going to be hard to organize everything. 37 . If you do it digitally, you’ll find that the technology can pull everything together for you.
Schedule small tasks. If a task or project requires action beforehand (like sending out an agenda before a meeting), make sure that you schedule those into your day, too. 38 .
Get organized at home. Don’t just restrict your organized approach to work. 39 . Declutter (简化) where you live to make mornings easier. Plan your whole day carefully. And talk to the people you live with, so that they know how they can help.
40 . Whether you’re prioritizing your professional tasks for the week, or mapping out your family commitments, think about how to make every second count. Try to delete low-value tasks where you can to make time for what’s really important.
A.Put a high value on your time.
B.Strike a balance between your work and life.
C.Here are five everyday strategies worth trying.
D.A chaotic home life will bring its own problems.

It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in front of the children.
My wife, Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts. This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders of the wrapping paper.
Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement of the moment just beamed across her face. It was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally, I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I decided to go ahead and get it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and blurted out (脱口而出), “A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”
Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag before I opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag, my heart sank.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
On the tag were the letters that read, “To Dad, Love Christy”.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Staring at the gift, I suddenly thought of a way to cheer her up.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the tag were the letters that read, “To Dad, Love Christy”. Seeing her joy replaced by a look of total embarrassment and humiliation, I was seized by a strong sense of regret and pain. She slowly lowered her head down, seemingly praying that nobody would discover whom the gift came from. Without hesitation, I knelt down and embraced Christy tightly, trying to take back those words. I explained I had thought it was from Mom, but since it came from her, that made it different. However, no matter what I said , it could hardly remove the disappointment in her eyes and hurt in her heart. Confronted with the embarrassing situation, I was at a loss what to do.
Staring at the gift, I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up. I took that toy airplane in my hand, turned on its switch and flew the plane. At the sight of the flying plane, I yelled with excitement, which amused other children who eagerly asked for a try. My eyes resting on Christy, I deliberately ignored their enthusiasm, flying the plane around her. “Let me try it first!”. It wasn’t long before Christy believed it was really a charming gift and grabbed for the plane, a big smile radiating from her lightened face. From then on, I kept the little plane as a reminder of my girl’s love and also, the power of words.
