Mr. Brown is already 89 years old. He used to sell ice-cream in New York. Last month, his daughter died and left him two grandchildren. He had to look after them.

“What should we do? We have to make money.” Mr. Brown said to his wife. Then he decided to sell ice-cream again. He got up early every morning and worked until midnight.

Steve is a reporter. He often bought ice-cream from Mr. Brown. Soon, he learned about his story.

Long ago in India, there was a man named Sessa. He made a chess game for the emperor. The emperor loved the game. Then he said he would give Sessa anything he liked. Anything! The emperor enjoyed boasting (吹嘘). But instead of something expensive, Sessa said he wanted only some grains (粒) of rice.

“What?” The emperor was surprised.

“My wants are few,” replied Sessa. “On the first day give me a grain of rice on the first square (棋盘上的方格). On the second day give me two grains on the second square. On the third day cover the third square with four grains. Each day double (翻倍) the number of the grains.”
