Every February for two weeks, the Nice Carnival in France brings almost one million visitors. The carnival has three main things.

The Main Carnival Parade

An English learner may not understand a native（本地的）speaker of English. Native speakers say lots of things that you can't find in a dictionary. A lot of British people can't understand each other, either.

Across the UK, a number of areas have different dialects（方言）. Language and accents（口音） are also different because of different social classes and education.

As a result, a new accent was created at the end of the 20th century —Multicultural （多元文化的）London English.

Other reasons are also important in the new accent and the way of speaking. These include the people's habits from different places and different age groups.

“Yoof culture” is an example. The word “yoof” is a slang spelling of “youth”. Young people are creating their own language. By using words that their parents don’t understand, children can talk about things that their parents might not agree with. For example, instead of saying something like "That's good!” or “I understand”, the yoof will use a single word like “Safe!” or "Sorted!” The yoof would use “kind-a-thing” to say “if you understand what I’m saying”. In this way, they're starting to find self-expression.

As English learners, we may wonder how well we can talk to a native speaker, but perhaps we should worry less about this. Research shows that 94% of the English spoken in the world today is spoken among non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about "international English”, there's no such tiling as a native or non-native speaker.

Lions are special animals to Chinese people. They can often be seen in front of the gates of traditional buildings.

Actually, there were no lions in ancient China until the Han dynasty. With increased trade and cultural exchanges through the Silk Road, lions were introduced to China, Before the Han dynasty, most people in ancient China had never seen a real lion. Therefore, the stone Hons looked different from the real lions.

Stone lions of different dynasties are not the same. The ones of the Han and Tang dynasties look very strong, while the thin but powerful ones are from the Yuan dynasty. As to the stone lions of the Ming and Qing dynasties, they appear meek (温顺的). Also, stone lions have local styles in different parts of China. In traditional Chinese culture, the lion is a mythical figure (神话形象) rather than a real animal. It is believed that the lion can drive away bad luck and bring safety. That is why people used to put stone lions in front of their gates. What’s more, the lion is regarded as the king of the forest, so it has long been used as a symbol of power.
