People introduced the idea of smart cities many years ago in the Unites States. Since then, it has spread to more and more countries. People hoped new technologies could help them live happier lives in cities.
Governments are interested in building smarter cities. Many companies see the smart program as a great opportunity to make money. Leading technology companies like Tecent and Microsoft have offered their smart-city solutions. However, not all the project designers have a clear idea of what they are going to achieve. They may proudly show off exciting new technologies like 5G, but they don’t know how to use them to solve real-world problems. In other words, they sound more like technology salespeople than city builders.
Things can cause problems. City planning should always center around one question: What do we need to do to improve the living conditions of the citizens? However, here comes another question: Would companies take care of their business interests first?
Sometimes, the problem is not about we don’t have smart technologies. What we need may be smarter decision-making. Smart cars are certainly smarter than bicycles. However, are they really more enjoyable? Do they really make the city a better place to live? City managers should think about what kind of life they want the cities to provide for their citizens. Planners and technology developer should think about that too. They should think about making the cities better while they are worrying about making them smarter.
31. What does the underlined word “spread” probably mean in Chinese?
A. 议论 B. 试行 C. 传播
32. What does building smarter cities mean to many companies?

B. City planning should be about improving citizens’ quality of life.
C. All the project designers know what they’re going to achieve.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Smarter cars are more enjoyable.
B. Everyone sees smarter cities as better places to live.
C. Smart technologies are not the only things to consider in building smart cities.
35. What does the author try to tell us?
A. We should build more smart cities.
B. We should help smart technology companies.
C. We should make smarter decisions while building smarter cities.

Have you ever told a lie? Scientists found that lying can harm your brain(大脑). It may stop you from doing other important tasks.
When you tell the truth, your brain doesn’t have to do any extra(额外的) work. 36. __________________.
37. __________________. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. So you say: “I picked up a book from the library.” Your teacher asks: “The book I suggested last time?” Then you must decide how to answer the question. If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. So you might say: “No.” 38. __________________. You need to make sure it’s a book from the library. See? When you lie, your brain works a lot more to keep the lie from falling apart.
You just gave your brain a lot of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex(前额皮质) does the work. It’s the part in charge of(掌管) short memory. That area also takes care of planning, problem solving and self-control.
Using too much brainpower(脑力) to lie means you may not use it to do other things, like solving math problems. 39. __________________. The prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until age 25. So when young people are busy with lying, they’ll have a harder time doing other things, like making study plans or eating a healthy diet. 40. __________________.
A. Imagine you’re late for class B. But lying takes much more work C. Now you have to think of a book title D. Lying is even harder for young people E. So please think twice before lying next time |
第三节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
When you throw a plastic bottle into a recycling(回收) bin, it probably doesn’t get recycled. According to one report, only 14% of plastic packaging(包装) is collected for recycling. One reason is that not all plastic can be recycled. Sometimes, that’s because of the type of plastic.
Experts say companies should stop using single-use containers(容器). They should use containers that can be used over and over. These could be metal(金属) or glass. And people can refill(重新装满) them at a store or at home. Reuse will also have to be an important part for solving the problem.
Can reusable packaging help us save the environment? Yes, but there’s a “payback” time with any reusable item. That’s the number of times it must be reused before it’s actually better for the environment than the single-use packages. What consumers(消费者) do is also important. If someone buys a metal shampoo bottle, gets lazy, and throws it into the garbage instead of refilling it, that might be worse for the environment than a single-use bottle. That’s because it takes more energy to make the reusable metal bottle.
For a reuse program to work, experts say making it simple is the best. A company called Loop used to sell its products online, and customers sent empty containers back for a refill. The company made a change to allow customers to return their bottles in person. Now they don’t have to mail them back to Loop. This makes returning even easier.
41. According to a report, how much plastic packaging is collected for recycling?
42. Where can people refill their containers?
43. Is reusable packaging better for the environment?
44. What do experts think is the best for a reuse program?
