As a work-from-home mother of three, I’ve spent my life avoiding uncomfortable situations. One fall morning, I was on a routine walk with a friend, when I mentioned that I felt trapped by my commitment to familiarity but didn’t know how to be brave and branch out.
“Starting today, do something small every day that terrifies you,” she suggested. Knowing that something in my life needed to shift, I gave myself perm ii on to explore new and frightening chances.
My profession as a heath coach centered on work with individual clients in my home office. When asked to do a presentation on healthy eating for the school board, I recognized that as a signal not to shy away from growth, learning and overcoming my limitations. My wise friend’s advice became my life guideline. I felt confident and capable for the first time in my life.
This newfound bravery was challenged one day when my husband presented me with the possibility of working in Turkey. For years, he’d dreamed of moving our family overseas to pursue a different career. Held back by fear, never before would I have considered taking this giant leap of faith. But I was capable of anything.
I knew the moment I said it that we’d move to Turkey. Every day leading up to the arriving trucks was filled with opportunities to practice hugging fear. Six months later, we unpacked our bags in our small city apartment and showed our children the view from their new bedroom window. One year into our life abroad, in a country where I don’t speak the language, I get to try and fail, feel fear and be brave every day.
Accepting and seeking opportunities that scare me has taught me that, regardless of the comfort of my surroundings, I’ll be okay. Without fear, I’d still be at my regular drive-through asking for the sandwich instead of sitting in a café telling the waiter to “surprise me”.
    24. What was the cause of the fear the author felt?
    A. She lived a hard and unpredictable life.
    B. Her days were packed with small worries.
    C. Everything was familiar and safe for her.
    D. She suffered when pursuing her career.
    25. What had the author’s husband dreamed of doing?
    A. Starting a different career abroad.
    B. Helping the author out of her fear.
    C. Having his children study abroad.
    D. Doing remote work as a health coach.
    26. How did the author react to her husband’s suggestion?
    A. She turned to her friend for some advice.
    B. She felt capable of living alone at home.
    C. She refused the offer for fear of a change.
D She took it as a way of self-improvement.
    27. What lesson does the author draw from her experience?
    A. Comfort zone is a block to one’s progress.
    B. It’s beneficial to step into the world of fear.
    C. It takes great skills to overcome one’s fear.
    D. Knowing the language is a must living abroad.
C 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据第一段“As a work-from-home mother of three, I’ve spent my life avoiding uncomfortable situations. One fall morning, I was on a routine walk with a friend, when I mentioned that I felt trapped by my commitment to familiarity but didn’t know how to be brave and branch out.
根据第四段“For years, he’d dreamed of moving our family overseas to pursue a different career. 故选A。
根据第五段“I knew the moment I said it that we’d move to Turkey.
根据最后一段“Accepting and seeking opportunities that scare me has taught me that, regardless of the comfort of my surroundings, I’ll be okay. Without fear, I’d still be at my regular drive-through asking for the sandwich instead of sitting in a café telling the waiter to “surprise me”.
    C
The painting “Portrait(肖像) of Omai” was finished in 1774 and was sold to John Magnier in 2001. When he wants to take the painting out of the country, the government believes it’s important for Britain and stops him doing so. Yet British buyers can’t raise the money needed to get it from Mr. Magnier before the deadline of a ban one exporting it. A solution may now involve Getty Museum in Los Angeles; it could be a model for her treasured artworks too expensive for the nation to buy.
Most countries have export restrictions on their cultural treasures. Many European counts a low the government to step in and buy any work offered for sale. Britain operates a system called Waverley standards, balancing the aims of keeping important pieces and protecting the rights of their owners. Valuable pieces are evaluated at monthly meetings of a committee of owners, dealers and art historians. The most important works are kept in Britain temporarily while institutions at home try to raise the funds to buy them.
Mr. Magnier paid £10.3 million for “Portrait of Omai”. Now he wants £50 million for it, a fair value. The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London has been trying to raise the cash, but only half the money had been raised. The NPG’s answer is to buy the painting together with the Getty Museum, spending half its time in London and the other half in California. In 2015 a similar arrangement was agreed between France and the Netherlands to share ownership of a pair of important portraits by Rembrandt.
The Waverley standards were meant to keep Brit in’s cultural treasures at home. But protecting an artwork for the nation for some time maybe all that can be achieved. Closed for three years for repair, the NPG hopes it will open its doors again with “Portrait of Omai” as its glory.
    28. What can we learn about Magnier from Para. 1?
    A. He painted a portrait of an Englishman. B. He wanted to take the painting abroad.
    C. He illegally took hold of the paining. D. He solved the problem with a portrait.
    29. What do the Waverley standards do to keep cultural treasures at home?
    A. They set aside time for home purchase.
    B. They checkout annual export licences.
    C. They decide a ban on the rare treasures.
    D. They advertise the sales of the treasures.
    30. What will be the final solution to “Portrait of Omai”?
    A. Britain takes it for permanent ownership.
    B. Mr. Magnier takes it abroad after the deadline.
C Britain works with France to share its ownership.
    D. NPG and the Getty Museum share its ownership.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. The Cooperation of World’s Galleries B. The Protection of Galleries’ Paintings
    C. A New Way to Save Art for the Nation D. A Clever Way to Stop Loss of Paintings
B 29. A 30. D 31. C

根据第一段“When he wants to take the painting out of the country, the government believes it’s important for Britain and stops him doing so.

故选A。
根据第三段“The NPG’s answer is to buy the painting together with the Getty Museum, spending half its time in London and the other half in California.
根据第二段“Most countries have export restrictions on their cultural treasures. Many European counts a low the government to step in and buy any work offered for sale. Scientists are working to understand how and where so many birds make annual migrations(迁徙). In some cases, what they have uncovered is more surprising than they could have predicted.
Assessing the progress and its effects is the task of science writer Rebecca Heisman’s first book Flight Paths, providing a look into the drama behind some biggest discoveries in migration research.
In its nine chapters, Flight Paths soars through the history of migration research, from counting passing birds against the moon in the 1950s to the recent use of wearable trackers.
Most people are now familiar with the idea that some birds travel thousands of kilometres seasonally for climate, food or mates, but the scientists first explaining the phenomenon were often laughed at. Advances in technology are finally allowing research to confirm or debunk those early words.
In the 1960s, scientist Ian Nisbet proposed that blackpoll warblers(黑顶白颊林莺) were taking a far more impressive autumn journey than anyone had thought. As Heisman reports, Nisbet believed they were making the long fight from eastern Canada to South American countries such as Colombia and Brazil. Some thought it strange: how could a bird weighing just 12 grams fly so far over the Atlantic Ocean in days of nonstop flying? Five decades later, researchers confirmed Nisbet’s opinion with a device that uses sunlight to work out a bird’s place at a given time.
Understanding how, why and where birds migrate is more than solving a mystery. It’s critical for future conservation efforts. Migratory species are especially at risk because they rely on a network of healthy, connected habitats. In 2019, a study found that North America alone had lost around a quarter of its birdlife since 1970 when they were migrating, which amounts to around 3 billion individual birds. “If we know where birds are going, we’ll have the information we need to save them,” says Heisman.
Flight Paths is a vital wake-up call to birders, ornithological(鸟类学的) societies and governments.
    32. What can we know about the book Flight Paths?
    A. It has some wrong predictions about bird migrations.
    B. It contains findings that may surprise bird scientists.
    C. It looks into the scientific findings about bird migrations.
    D. It has many effects needing scientific confirmation.
    33. Which of the following best explains “debunk” underlined in paragraph 4?
    A. Support a discovery.
    B. Prove a correct opinion.
    C. Draw attention to a topic.
    D. Expose the false statement.
    34. What was Ian Nisbet’s opinion about blackpoll warblers?
    A. They made along migration journey.
    B. They could fly for long without as top.
    C. They were the smallest migratory birds.
    D. They used sunlight to locate their places.
    35. What did a 2019 study find?
    A. Knowing where birds go will help us protect them.
    B. Many birds have died on migration because of risks.
    C. Most of bird species in North America have died out.
    D. Heisman’s book has drawn attention to protecting birds.

根据文章第二段“Assessing the progress and its effects is the task of science writer Rebecca Heisman’s first book Flight Paths, providing a look into the drama behind some biggest discoveries in migration research.(科学作家丽贝卡·海斯曼的第一本书《飞行之路》的任务是评估这一进展及其影响,该书让我们得以一窥迁徙研究中一些重大发现背后的戏剧性故事。)”
根据文章第四段“Advances in technology are finally allowing research to confirm or debunk those early words.(技术的进步最终使研究能够证实或debunk这些早期的话。)”
根据文章第五段“In the 1960s, scientist Ian Nisbet proposed that blackpoll warblers(黑顶白颊林莺) were taking a far more impressive autumn journey than anyone had thought. As Heisman reports, Nisbet believed they were making the long fight from eastern Canada to South American countries such as Colombia and Brazil. Some thought it strange: how could a bird weighing just 12 grams fly so far over the Atlantic Ocean in days of nonstop flying? 故选A项。
根据文章第六段“In 2019, a study found that North America alone had lost around a quarter of its birdlife since 1970 when they were migrating, which amounts to around 3 billion individual birds. “If we know where birds are going, we’ll have the information we need to save them,” says Heisman.(2019年,一项研究发现,自1970年鸟类迁徙以来,仅北美就失去了约四分之一的鸟类,相当于约30亿只鸟。

根据后文“It forces you to concentrate and think of interesting and positive things that have happened in your life.(它迫使你集中精力,思考生活中发生的有趣和积极的事情)”下文提到手写书信的好处:这能让写信人集中思想去想生活中发生的有趣和正能量的事情。
根据后文“It’s a pleasant surprise to receive a letter from a friend or relative, knowing that someone cares about you, thus enriching a relationship to grow healthily.(收到朋友或亲戚的来信是一个惊喜,知道有人关心你,从而丰富了关系健康发展)”可知,本空位于段首,后文说的是收到书信一方的快乐。
根据上文“When I was 12, my mum made me write letters to a few randomly selected relatives. One of them was my uncle who I’d only met a few times. I wrote along letter detailing my life and interests. Then I forgot about this until I suddenly got a reply from him. “How lovely to hear from you,” he said, and went on to tell me all about his life.(当我12岁的时候,我妈妈让我给几个随机挑选的亲戚写信。
根据上文“He turned out to be the most fascinating man. When he died, my mum was sad, as they had not been in touch for years.(他原来是最有魅力的人。他去世的时候,我妈妈很伤心,因为他们已经很多年没有联系了)”以及后文“The last one was written a few days before he had died. My mum comforted herself read ng them.(最后一封是在他去世前几天写的。
根据上文“Although they hadn’t been in touch, I had grown closet to him by writing to him.

Public places have been difficult for my family since Myles was diagnosed with autism(自闭症) at two. He had quickly turned into a silent child frozen in a world completely inaccessible to us. One time, I got up the courage to take Myles out to Golden Corral without my husband. Lots of people and noise caused overload for him. First came the screaming, and then more noises. With my nerves stretched thin, I noticed a sweet old lady coming my way.
“Can you keep him quiet?” she snapped. “I’m trying to eat!”
I held my tongue out of respect for my elders. I apologized and left with as much dignity as I could. I had to escape the weight of the eyes around. After that, I built a wall around my heart to protect my heart from other people’s opinions about my family. I still had the great privilege of raising this very special child. It didn’t matter what anyone thought, but I had lost something. I stopped looking for the opportunity to help them understand. I assumed the worst about them.
So when I was back at Golden Corral with my son, who started shouting and hitting the table again, I looked up at the middle-aged woman approaching. Her face was calm as she assessed the situation. If she complained about my son’s behavior, I was prepared to fight back.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking,” she said. “But does your son have autism?”
“Yeah,” I replied to the lady, who was waiting patiently.
“Well, I raised a child with autism. My name is Pam,” she said. “If you ever need any help, please call me. I have connection with a lot of people like you and me.” I looked at the hands she extended, holding a slip of paper with her name and number on it.
“Thank you,” I managed to whisper.
“Call me,” she said, smiling at me, and saving a special, knowing smile for Myles before walking away.

Later I called her, and she became as close as family. The moment we met at her home, she greeted me with a sweet smile on her face. I was struck by her patience when dealing with Myles and her kid, who was also suffering from autism. Together we sat in the kitchen, sometimes out in the open, talking and laughing happily. On sunny days, the four of us would hike or go camping in the open. Meanwhile, the two kids seemed to enjoy the company of each other, and things began to improve for them.
Of course, there are moments when we simply felt hopeless. Usually at this time, we would hug each other, saying encouraging words to each other. Pam managed to contact some doctors and experts on autism, and we shared experiences and our vision of the future, believing that things would be all right as long as we stayed positive. Luckily, with our common efforts, the two kids are improving significantly. And I begin to look forward to each day filled with hope.
