There’s a phrase in Australia that is still widely in use today, “you’ve got Buckley’s”. It relates to a man named William Buckley.
Born in Cheshire, England, Buckley had served in the Napoleonic Wars where he was wounded in action, before being accused of receiving stolen goods (a roll of cloth) and sentenced to transportation (流放) for life in 1802. Buckley arrived at Port Phillip Bay with more than 300 soldiers, settlers and prisoners in 1803, aged 23.
However, the settlers failed to settle at Port Phillip Bay and they gave up the site they chose for their settlement. As the settlers prepared to leave for Tasmania, Buckley escaped with 2 other men. But after reaching the other side of Port Phillip Bay the two tired, hungry and frightened men turned back for Sullivan Bay.
Buckley would not give up and he wandered on alone, eating shellfish and fruits for several weeks before he was befriended by the Wathaurong people. Over the next 32 years Buckley lived with the Wathaurong and learnt their language and customs.
When John Batman, a leading member of the Port Phillip Association, arrived with new settlers in 1835, Buckley finally decided to meet them. At first he couldn’t remember his own language or name but managed to identify himself by the letters “WB” on his arm. He tried to work for the settlers and was employed as an interpreter between the settlers and the aborigines (土著人). But he felt he wasn’t trusted by either side. After less than 2 years he left for Hobart where he died after an accident in January 1856.
Buckley’s story has been reinterpreted many times over the years. His name lives on in Australian English with the saying “you’ve got Buckley’s”. It means very little chance—despite the fact that the real Buckley took his impossible chance for freedom and survived.
4. Why did William Buckley leave England?
A. He was found guilty. B. He tried to escape war.
C. He was caught stealing. D. He hoped for a better life.
5. What happened to the three prisoners during their escape?
A. They suffered many hardships. B. Two of them died of starvation.
C. They met the Wathaurong people. D. Buckley gave up on the other two.
6. What do we know about Buckley’s last years?
A. He worked as an interpreter.
B. He earned his living in Hobart.
C. He got on well with Batman’s settlers.
D. He stayed with the Wathaurong people.
7. In which situation will you say “you’ve got Buckley’s”?
A. When a person survived a disaster.
B. When a person isn’t trusted by people.
C. When a person tries to do something interesting.
D. When a person wants to take a flight on a stormy night.

Co-sleeping under any circumstances is not safe for newborn baby sleep, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) stressed Tuesday in the first update to its safe sleep guidelines (指南) for babies since 2016.
“We know that many parents choose to share a bed with a child, for instance, perhaps to help with breastfeeding (喂奶) or because of a cultural preference or a belief that it is safe. But the evidence is clear that co-sleeping significantly raises the risk of a baby’s injury or death. And for that reason AAP cannot support bed-sharing under any circumstances.” said Dr. Rebecca Carlin, who co-authored the guidelines and technical report from the AAP Task Force on Sudden Baby Death Syndrome and the AAP Committee on Fetus and Newborn, in a statement.
Some 3,500 newborn babies, many of whom are in socially disadvantaged communities, die from sleep-related baby deaths in the United States each year, the AAP said. “The rate of sudden unexpected baby deaths (SUBDs) among Black and American Indian Native babies was more than double and almost triple (三倍), respectively, that of white newborn babies (85 per 100,000 live births) in 2010—2013,” the AAP noted in a statement.
While the AAP strongly advises against co-sleeping, its updated guidelines say babies should sleep in the same room with their parents for at least six months on a separate sleep surface with a firm, flat surface.
Based on new Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations that will go into effect this week, the only products which can be marketed for baby sleep include cribs (婴儿床) and bedside sleepers—the separate small cribs that attach to the parent’s bed but allow babies to sleep alone. Parents should not use products for sleep that aren’t specifically marketed for sleep, the AAP said.
8. What results in AAP’s disagreement with co-sleeping?
A. Breastfeeding. B. Circumstances.
C. Cultural preferences. D. Babies’ personal safety.
9. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The rate of newborn babies.
B. The rate of socially disadvantaged babies.
C. The rate of sudden unexpected baby deaths.
D. The rate of Black and American Indian Native babies.
10. What are parents recommended to do according to the updated guidelines?
A. To sleep in separate rooms with their babies.
B. To put babies to sleep on a soft and flat surface.
C. To provide separate cribs for babies to sleep alone.
D. To recognize the products that are marketed for sleep.
11. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To present a guideline. B. To clarify a problem.
C. To explain a phenomenon. D. To make a comparison.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. A

Humans often find their way around by using a technology system called GPS. This system uses a device to work out the position of individuals or things from any place on the ground or in the air. Now, scientists have found that some sharks may have a sort of natural GPS.
Scientists have known that animals such as birds and sea turtles use magnetic (磁性的) fields to find food and nesting sites. So, they wanted to know if bonnethead sharks — a type of small hammerhead shark — could use magnetic fields in the same way.
In an experiment the scientists caught bonnethead sharks off the coast of Florida. Next, they exposed the sharks to magnetic conditions. These conditions were similar to ones that the sharks usually encounter hundreds of kilometers away from the Florida location. The simulated (模拟) conditions made the sharks think they were further south than they actually were. The sharks responded by swimming north, proving that they could respond to magnetic fields.
Robert Hueter, a senior scientist, who was not involved in the study, said that he would like to see more research on how the sharks use the magnetic fields to determine their location and whether larger, long-distance migrating(迁徙) sharks use a similar system to find their way. “The question has always been: Even if sharks are sensitive to magnetic orientation, do they use this sense to find their way in the oceans, and how?” he added.
The information learned from the study could also help scientists keep track of and manage different sharks throughout the world’s oceans. It may help them understand why shark populations are declining. Knowing how sharks find their way in the oceans could be one step toward saving them.
12. Why isGPS mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To state an opinion. B. To introduce a finding.
C. To provide basic information. D. To confirm a prediction.
13. What did scientists do to prove sharks’ response to magnetic fields?
A. Observing sharks’ natural habitats.
B. Analyzing sharks’ different response.
C. Placing sharks further south of Florida.
D. Modelling conditions familiar to sharks.
14. What can be learned from Robert Hueter’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. He is eager to participate in the further research.
B. He is optimistic about the future about the research.
C. He is doubtful about the accuracy of Keller’s experiment.
D. He is curious about sharks’ response to the magnetic fields.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A Magnetic Field — Sharks’ Natural GPS
B. GPS — an Effective Positioning System
C. Sharks — an Endangered Species to Protect
D. Byran Keller — a Pioneer in Magnetic Study
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. A

Like millions of parents, we all hope that our children can be both physically and mentally healthy. We want them to study hard to achieve what the whole society is struggling for. We want them to obey what it thought to be right. However, what is really going on in the teenager’s mind is always confusing, which will always challenge your bottom line.
When my son was a little boy? I was once a very happy mother. He was adorable, willing to do anything I asked him to do. He was smart, always finishing the task ahead of schedule. He was kind, attending to me when I wasn’t feeling myself. I felt how lucky I was to be his mother. To tell the truth, I didn’t expect parenting a teenager to be this hard.
However, everything changed when he entered the middle school. We seemed to become totally strangers. In the recent days, my son and I battled every corner. About schoolwork. About his attitude. About his friends. About screen time. So on and so much. It seemed as if everything I had said was just met with an eye roll or “why”. I didn’t know whether it was so-called “the eye-roll stage”.
On a recent drive home, after picking up my son from school, we went for a grocery pickup. As soon as the food was put into the grocery cart, he grabbed from the shelf a box of snack cakes, a processed food I’d allowed. As he stuffed yellow cakes and frosted coating into his mouth, I couldn’t help wondering if this decision would come back to punish me with a teenage stomachache later in the evening.
But before we had even exited the parking lot, he asked me to pull over. I just wanted to get it done quickly. But then my son surprised me.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
“Can I share something with the homeless man, Mum?” He asked. “Of course, you can”. Though out of expectation, I agreed without hesitation. The moment I pulled over, my son, who seemed simply to have cared about the characters in his games, quickly grabbed some cakes and rushed towards a homeless old man standing outside the store. The poor man in rags with a matted beard bent his head, afraid to make an eye contact with others. When my son reached out and handed him some cakes, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Holding the cakes, he thanked my son again and again. My son shyly came back and we continued our ride.
On our way home, we frankly discussed how hard it must be for the homeless people. It was a rare conversation between us without push or pull negotiation. It was merely a time to reflect how much we had to be thankful for what we had. When we eventually went into our garage, the same teenager, expressing concern for my recent illness of waist, said, “You are not unloading any of these bags. I got them, Mom.” He dragged all the bags upstairs and carefully placed them on the kitchen table. Seeing the sweat streaming down his faces, I found the barrier between us melting, and sometimes parenting a teenager sweet.
