Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank(存钱罐)onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack.
"That aroused my curiosity," Jackie told CBS News. "Nobody messes with the piggy bank." After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings.
"What are you doing with that money?" Jackie asked her granddaughter.
"I'm taking it to school," Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. "I'm going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn't get milk—her mom doesn't have milk money and I do."
Jackie's heart melted at Sunshine's words. Choked with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms.
Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher, Rita Hausher, and handed her the﹩30 the kindergartner had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine's class and about half don't get milk. It costs $ 0.45 a carton(纸盒). The total adds up to about $180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day.
After dropping Sunshine off at school, Jackie posted a tearful video on Facebook to explain her granddaughter's plan. To her surprise, dozens of people offered to donate toward the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine's class can get free milk for the rest of the year.
Jackie said Sunshine doesn't see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to look out for her friends. "She doesn't understand the effect she's brought about," Jackie said." But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to."
    24. Why did Sunshine empty her piggy bank?
    A. She intended to pay for her friend's milk. B. She needed to train her counting skills.
    C. She wanted to play with the coins. D. She hoped to show off her savings in class.
    25. How did Jackie feel upon hearing Sunshine's words?
    A. Proud B. Curious C. Touched D. Relieved
    26. In Jackie's eyes, what did Sunshine learn from the experience?
    A. Many hands make light work. B. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
    C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Two heads are better than one.
    27. What is the best title for this passage?
    A. Jackie's Piggy Bank. B. Piggy Bank and Carton Milk.
    C. A Moved Grandmother. D. Small Coins, Big Deeds.

When driving, Clara-Marina Martinez makes a note of any unusual behavior she sees on the road. She then feeds these into machine-learning algorithms (算法), a form of AI, which she is helping develop for Porsche(保时捷) Engineering.
Those algorithms are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself. Such a fully autonomous(自动的) car, known in the industry as Level 5, should be able to complete an entire journey without any operation from the driver, and deal with all situations on the road. But this is proving hard to achieve, and many attempts to do so are being abandoned. Last year, for instance, Uber sold off its unit developing self-driving cars.
Autonomous vehicles are said to be not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time to learn how to drive safely, so do machines. And machines are not quick learners. The RAND Corporation predicts that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver, a fleet of 100 self-driving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Carmakers such as Porsche therefore speed up the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach software about dangers only encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her workmates use “game engines” to do this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive. Objects in these virtual worlds feature their physical characteristics (ie, buildings are hard, people are soft) so that the sensors in vehicles respond in the appropriate way. Once the software has been trained, it is tested in real autonomous vehicles by re-creating those situations on a test track.
How quickly all this will translate into reality remains to be seen. Both regulators and customers will need to overcome the doubt that a software driver really can be safer than a human being.
From Porsche’s point of view, though, there is another question. Given that much of the reason for owning a sports car is for owners to show off their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a sports car where software takes those bragging rights (炫耀的权力) away?
    28. What is the problem with self-driving cars?
    A. They learn as slowly as human beings.
    B. They have to be monitored by human drivers.
    C. They can operate for a very short period of time.
    D. They need a long time to reach a certain safety level.
    29. What are Dr Martinez and her workmates doing?
    A. Fixing sensors in autonomous vehicles.
    B. Re-creating road situations on a test track.
    C. Enabling software to identify road dangers.
    D. Separating the real world from the virtual world.
    30. What worries Porsche according to the last paragraph?
    A. The reliability of car software.
    B. The quality of self-driving cars.
    C. The driving skills of human beings.
    D. The future of its sports car market.
    31. Where can you find this piece of reading in a newspaper?
    A. Travel B. Science fiction C. Science D. Health
    D
In the Beijing Winter Olympics, we were treated to incredible displays of athletic talents as competitors took to the snow and ice. As a popular sport at the Winter Olympics, ski jumping is one of the best examples to showcase the “superhuman” power of athletes.
Ski jumpers soar into the air and appear to be almost flying in the sky. How do they achieve this? Physics can offer us an explanation of how they make it. It involves the use of the laws of aerodynamics(空气动力学) to fight against gravity and increase lift while reducing drag.
To understand how ski jumping works, we need to consider three elements: gravity, lift and drag. Gravity is the force that pulls us towards an object. Lift occurs when an object is moving through the air — as its surface comes into contact with air particles(微粒), the particles are pushed down and away from the object, allowing it to move up. At the same time, this interaction creates drag, and slows down an object’s movement.
While there is nothing that the skiers can do about gravity, they can twist their bodies into positions to allow them to achieve greater lift and avoid as much drag as possible. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, “To do this, athletes try their best to make their skis and body nearly parallel to the ground and place their skis in a V-shape just outside the form of the body. This position increases the surface area that produces lift and puts them in the ideal angle that will also maximize(最大化) lift.”
Because of how the sport works, athletes’ equipment is strictly controlled according to weight and height in order to avoid any unfair advantages. This means suits must be tight in order to ensure athletes cannot use them as a way to gain more lift. For athletes, minor day-to-day water weight changes as little as 300 grams. It can mean that suits will not be tight enough according to their body mass indexes(体重指数).
    32. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in the second paragraph?
    A. Athletic talent. B. Ski jumping. C. Physical science. D. Superhuman power.
    33. What contributes to lift in ski jumping?
    A. The interaction between force and drag. B. The interaction between gravity and balance.
    C. The interaction between skiers and air particles. D. The interaction between air particles and gravity.
    34. What is required to ensure fair play in ski jumping?
    A. Standardized equipment. B. Specially made suits.
    C. Strict control of athletes’ height. D. Much daily water intake.
    35. What’s the main focus of the text?
    A. The techniques used by ski jumpers. B. Rules of the ski jumping competition.
    C. Excellent performances in ski jumping. D. The scientific principles behind ski jumping.

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s well-known by all the people to greet friends with a smile and a wave. __36___ However, what happens if your face and body send mixed messages? Would someone tend to believe the look on your face or the way you behave?
Recently, scientists have dealt with these questions. They found that when a person is staring at your face, he might not believe what he sees if your body doesn’t match the feeling that your face shows. ___37___ Previous study had showed that the tone of a person’s voice can be more important than the words spoken. For example, most people are more likely not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, "I’m so excited."
When talking about emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated faces and isolated bodies that showed anger or fear, __38___
An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A frightened face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth, ___39__ A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square, as if ready to fight back.
These results told the researchers that mixed messages can confuse people. Even when people
pay attention to the face, body language surely influences the emotion they read.___40___ And if you want to be understood it helps to avoid sending mixed messages.

A.Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists.
B.So, your body language is important for telling people your feelings.
C.Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that puzzles people,
D.An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight.
E.Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds.
F.They also showed pictures where angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies.
G.When doing this, your face and body work together to show your friends that you are happy to see them.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone, Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.
Recently the company was making corporate brochures in which achievers would share their success and thank their parents as well. For this, the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.
Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a photographer.
Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.
Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.
The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos, copied the rest on a flash drive (闪存盘) and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged (耸肩) helplessly and said nothing. Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina in the fairy tale.”
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Finishing her words, Kelsey’s mother turned and went out of the studio.

Kelsey felt so ashamed that she came near to tears.

    Dear Jim,
Learning that you are interested in the short video about innovative exercises posted on Tik Tok. I'm writing to share with you some detailed information.
As you can see, Chinese students do group exercises between classes every day to stay fit. Interestingly, some school exercises have grown popular online due to their local and innovative designs. For example, some school combine Tai Chi, an ancient martial art, with daily exercise while others blend the elements of local culture like folk dance and Sichuan Opera. Apparently, I am strongly for the idea to adopt innovative exercises between classes. It not only promotes students' enthusiasm about workout but also help students appreciate traditional culture.
What do you think of it? If you want to learn these new type of exercises, you can follow the video on Tik Tok to practice them.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    续写【答案】
Finishing her words, Kelsey’s mother turned and went out of the studio. Kelsey quickly followed her. After a few minutes’ silent walking, Kelsey’s mother stopped and looked straight at her daughter. “I know your feelings,” her mother said. “You are ashamed that people will find such a beautiful and successful Kelsey has such a fat mother. The fact is that I had no time to look after myself when I had to work two jobs to pay for your education. I’ m sorry for not being perfect.”
Kelsey felt so ashamed that she came near to tears. She hugged her mother and asked for her mother’s forgiveness. She admitted that her mother was the best and greatest woman in the world. Later Kelsey submitted the photos and proudly told almost everyone who saw the photos that she was grateful to this great woman for giving her a happy life. Time and life are not always on our parents’ side. Being ashamed of their appearance is one of the silliest things. So love our parents and appreciate their devotion.
