Shanghai's First “Forest Library”
On February 20th, 2023, the first “forest library” in Shanghai opened to the public. It’s known as Read & Joy Forest. Now readers can relax and read in a natural environment.
The “forest library” was started by Pudong New Area and Shanghai Library. It is in a green space area near Shanghai Library East, which opened in September, 2022. With an area of 20, 546 square meters, it allows visitors to take an enjoyable walk in the quiet forest.

Seba and his family live in Memphis, Tennessee—a place famous for music. He grew up with music all around, but he especially loved the drumming(鼓声) of Mr. Copeland from the band The Police.
Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. “Drums!” he answered. They bought him a junior drum kit(击鼓用具). It was a huge step. “He didn’t stop playing,” says his dad, Everett.
But soon Seba grew upset. He couldn’t get his junior drum kit to make the sound she heard Mr. Copeland making. So his parents bought him a professional drum kit and sent him to have drum lessons. In just a few months, his drum teacher reported that Seba was learning very quickly and needed a higher level of training. He was four years old then.
Seba’s parents encouraged him to learn more music. Seba learned bass, guitar and piano. He faced some challenges but he kept on practicing. To his parents’ surprise, Seba started a band in kindergarten(学前班). By the first grade, he was making money by playing music. In 2020, Seba joined a summer music program at Berklee (伯克利) at the age of 8. He studied bass and practiced up to 36 hours a week. In 2021, Seba spent four months in Utah, performing in “School of Rock the Musical”. Since he could play so many instruments, he was in almost every scene.

If you’ve ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think that they’re always sleeping. But in fact, they spend about seven months of the year in the ocean. So how do they sleep while they’re in the ocean?
Even though elephant seals are large animals they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface, some dangerous animals like sharks might attack(攻击) them. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(下潜) deep underwater, looking for food.
To find out how they sleep in the deep, a scientist named Jessica Kendall-Bar created a special cap. She and her team put the caps on thirteen female young elephant seals. The caps recorded the elephant seals brain activities. They also collected information on the elephant seals’ heart rates(心率), how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were.
The scientists learned that elephant seals sometimes sleep for a short time while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. As they begin to sleep, the elephant seals can control their bodies. But when they are deeply asleep, they simply begin to fall, spinning(快速旋转) in a circle “like a falling leaf”. The elephant seals wake up in time to go up for more air. In shallower(较浅) areas, the elephant seals sometimes wake upon the seafloor.
Using the information they collected from the cap-wearing elephant seals, the scientists created a computer program to study older records of elephant seal trips. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they’re in the ocean. That means that the rest on land is very important for them. Back on land, they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day.
The scientists hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they’re on land.

September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony(入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4—7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Seba and his family live in Memphis, Tennessee—a place famous for music. He grew up with music all around, but he especially loved the drumming(鼓声) of Mr. Copeland from the band The Police.

To find out how they sleep in the deep, a scientist named Jessica Kendall-Bar created a special cap. She and her team put the caps on thirteen female young elephant seals. The caps recorded the elephant seals brain activities. They also collected information on the elephant seals’ heart rates(心率), how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were.
The scientists learned that elephant seals sometimes sleep for a short time while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony(入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4—7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow(叩头) to the statue of Confucius(孔子像) 9 times and then to their teacher 3 times to show their deep respect(尊敬). During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on the students’ forehead(前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school earlier than their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name, which was used for future Imperial Examination(科举考试) .
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like they did in ancient times. Students put on traditional costumes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this moment, they take a step in the lifelong journey of learning.
