In a room full of glass of all shapes and sizes, Benjamin Revis creates objects of purpose. Revis is an artist, but not in the traditional sense. As the University of lowa's professional scientific glassblower, he designs and repairs glassware for students and teachers. He makes most pieces by hand.
“Often, people take for granted (视...为理所当然) how technical and challenging scientific glassblowing is. It is a lot more than just making test tubes,” says Revis, one of just two professional scientific glassblowers in the
    state of lowa.
Revis’ shop is located in the Chemistry Building, but he has clients across the university. “Having a scientific glassblower on campus is wonderful. I can visit the shop anytime and talk with Revis about the piece and any changes needed,” says Monica Correia, a professor at the Ul. “It is also more cost-effective. He has the capability to make custom pieces, something that would be much more expensive if I contacted an outside glass producer.
Revis stepped into his trade by accident. He was a senior at Purdue University when he saw an artistic glassblowing demonstration at a local fair.“I couldn' t pull myself away and ended up watching the glassblower for over two hours," he says.
Later in his senior year, Revis took a scientific glassblowing class and stayed at Purdue for two more years to receive on-the-job training in the glass shop. And though he got a nuclear engineering job at Purduc, Revis’ passion for glassblowing never waned. When an opportunity to return to the profession arose, Revis didn' t hesitate to move to lowa to succeed Pete Hatch, who had been the UI' s scientific glassblower for 34 years. From repairs to custom pieces, Revis pushes himself to learn something new from each project. “There is still so much to be learned," he says. “I continue to grow with each new job request and challenge myself to improve every day."
    4. What does Revis do?
    A. He customizes laboratory glass equipment.
    B. He creates artwork out of glass.
    C. He sells test tubes to universities.
    D. He docs artistic glassblowing demonstrations.

Cactus(仙人掌) leather is a bio-based material famous for its breathability, an area in which other vegan leathers fall short. This unique material has been used for handbags, shoes, clothes, and furniture. Even car companies are following the trend.
Cactus leather is made from the nopal cactus, which is harvested twice a year by cutting off only mature leaves so that the cactus can continue to grow. The leaves are then cleaned, broken into smaller pieces, and left out in the sun to dry. Fibers are separated from the dried pieces. Then, a powdered (粉来状的) protein is extracted (规 取), taken to a laboratory, and mixed with varying materials that include colorants to form a liquid substance, which is then poured on top ofa carrier material to form cactus leather.
The nopal cactus used to make cactus leather is a fast-growing plant that doesn' t need much water. It is easily grown in dry conditions and is considered drought tolerant, an important quality for water conservation. Its hardiness also makes it ideal in an industry that is reliant on weather and climate conditions, creating a good income source for farmers. The most promising part of cactus farming is the plant' s ability to store carbon in the soil, allowing it to play apart in dealing with climate change.
Leather has a long and troubled past, The poisonous substances used to make leather are often under fire as well as the treatment of animals. The cactus avoids these problems and also reduces carbon from the atmosphere. As the fabric is relatively new, it is not known exactly how long it will last. That said, there is a study that shows the performance of the fabric is comparable to conventional leather.
Cactus leather appears to have a bright future ahead. Its adaptability and ability to draw in carbon are ideal features among the growing concerns for climate change and greenhouse gases.
    8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. Why the nopal cactus is perfect for making leather.
    B. Why cactus leather is setting new trends.
    C. What cactus leather is used for.
    D. How cactus leather is made.

    B. It can store much water in its roots.
    C. It grows slowly in wet conditions.
D, It is low in protein.
    10. What advantage does cactus leather have over conventional leather?
    A.It is softer.
    B. It is more durable.
    C. It is cruelty-free.
    D. It is cost-effective.
    11. What is the author' s attitude to the future of cactus leather?
    A. Doubtful. B.Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.

    D
Empathy (共情) is an important human quality that allows us to show care for others, Yet empathy is also a complex construct, and it isn' t as simple as more empathy is better". There are different types of empathy, and some are more important than others.
Psychologist Mark Davis has suggested that there are three important types of empathy. Let' s explore each type and the implications for each.
The first type of empathy is perspective-taking, which is also referred to as cognitive (认用的) empathy. It involves being able to see things from another's point of view. This helps us understand other people' s attitudes, viewpoints, and emotions, to some extent. Our research shows that perspective-taking is very important in social interactions and for leaders because they need to understand the people they lead and manage to motivate them effectively.
The type we most commonly think of as being empathic is empathic concern. It enables us to “read” other people's emotions and feelings and moves us to act -- to help wherever we can. This is the kind of empathy that is important for consultants and doctors. They need to understand clients' feelings and also find a way to reduce their suffering. It is partly emotional and partly cognitive.
The third type of empathy is what Davis labels "personal distress" ("I feel your pain”). This is vicariously (感 同身受地) experiencing another's emotions. If' they are happy, we feel happy; if they' re sad, we cry with them. Some people feel others’ emotional states so easily that they become sad at the feelings and emotions of others, thus the label of "distress”These three types of empathy represent different aspects of our personalities. In reality, we all have some level of each type of empathy. The key is to understand how we are empathic with others and realize the strength sand limitations of each type of empathy.
    12. For whom does the empathy of perspective-taking matter a lot?
    A. Company managers.
    B. Baby doctors.
    C. Psychologists.
    D. Consultants.
13 What can we learn about empathic concern?
A It can extend to our physical sensations.
    B. It often leads to us being overcome with feelings.
C.It helps us understand others points of view.
    D. It pushes us to take action and support others.
    14. Which of the following empathy is the most emotional?
    A. Perspective-taking.
    B. Empathic concern.
    C. Personal distress.
    D. Cognitive empathy.
    15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. How can you become more empathic?
    B. What type of empathy do you have?
    C. Can empathy benefit your health?
    D. Why is empathy important?

    Volunteering in South Africa
The idea of having an opportunity to go and see the Great White Shark has always been a distant dream. 16 With it offering the Great White Shark Conservation project at an affordable price, I packed my bags to spend four weeks in winter time in South Africa.
I arrived at Gansbaai, a two-and-a-half-hour car journey away from Cape Town, where we had an early start to head onto the first trip. 17 It was the most incredible feeling. All the fear I once had towards them was outweighed by the sense of amazement I felt when I saw them face to face.
Meeting all of the other volunteers was also fantastic. I made some goodfriends in my four weeks there. 18 There were activities most evenings, not to mention no sea days, which involved visiting the whale capital, a quick visit to a shark sanctuary (保护区) and relaxing in the hot springs.
Typically there are two or three shark trips a day and around three or four whale trips -- weather dependent. 19 I was volunteering on the shark boat the whale boat, as well as at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary which does fantastic work with ill or injured penguins and seabirds.
20 I managed to go on an exclusive (豪华的) boat trip that had fewer clients on board, giving me more opportunities to shoot some great videos of the incredible activities displayed by the sharks.
It was very rewarding knowing that our contribution as volunteers makes a difference to the conservation of the Great White Shark. I cannot wait to comeback in the future!
    A. Hard work pays off.
    B. I will never forget this experience.
    C. However, GoEco made my dream come true.
    D. Socially, we as volunteers were never left bored.
    E. I could identify the sharks who visited the sanctuary regularly.
    F. Therefore, there are plenty of opportunities to get onto the boats.
    G. Within minutes of arriving at our dive location we saw our first White Shark.

"Grandpa” Chuck started, "this year. we decided not to give you a cake for your birthday." He smiled.“Really? You broke your years-long tradition of giving me a' chocolate cake?! How could you?!"Stan joked. “Ah, wait and see, Grandpa. I think you' re going to like this a lot better than a chocolate cake," Chuck replied.
At that moment, Peter excitedly brought out his laptop and flashed a 3D model of a modern farmhouse. Kyle and Stan stared at the computer screen. "What are we looking at?"Stan asked his grandsons."We know how much your dad valued his farm and how much you wanted to honor him by maintaining it. Chuck and I raised money to fix the farmhouse AND the farm," Peter said with a smile.Stan covered his mouth with his hand. Tears instantly streamed down his face. "You' d do that for me?" he cried. “Grandpa, you' re the best grandfather on earth,” Chuck told him. “We' d do absolutely anything for you. There' s nothing else you need to say but to assure usthat you' Il help us rebuild the farm, Grandpa! You too, Dad!"
