Travel 2023: Summer holiday ideas
Summer is fast approaching, and with it, holidays. If you’ve not decided on your destination yet, here are some ideas for a great summer holiday this year.
Wild and Welsh
With its wonderful scenery, Wales has so much to offer. There are some extremely beautiful beaches and coastlines. The clear blue waters are perfect for a paddle. Wales also has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe, so if the weather does turn, take shelter in grand style-the great medieval Pembroke Castle offers fun for all the family.
A quiet time in Portugal
Madeira, which is located in the coast of Africa, is a Portuguese autonomous region, consisting of 4 islands. If you’re keen on good weather, it doesn’t disappoint, with a lovely warm climate hitting average highs of 27 degrees in August. It’s also known as ‘the floating garden in the Atlantic’. The Botanical Garden, just outside Funchal, offers more than 2000 exotic(奇异的)plants and is well worth a visit.
Croatian Cruising
Lying on the Adriatic looking over to Italy, Croatia is a fantastic holiday destination. Split or Dubrovnik offer rich culture, along with some outstanding shops and restaurants. Plus having joined the Euro earlier this year, it’s a great opportunity to spend the coins and notes you’ve had lying around since your last European adventure.
So what’s stopping you? Book now and say ‘oes!’ to a summer adventure.

Giant panda Ya Ya returned home to Beijing Zoo early on Monday after spending 20 years in the United States. Ya Ya will not be on show to the public for the time being as the 23-year-old panda needs to rest and get used to her new environment.
In 2003, Ya Ya, who was born at Beijing Zoo, and male giant panda Le Le, born at Shanghai Zoo in July 1998, traveled to Memphis Zoo in the US state of Tennessee as part of a China-US giant panda protection and research program. On April 27, Ya Ya arrived in Shanghai Zoo, and was then quarantined (隔离检疫) for a month before moving to Beijing. During the quarantine period, experienced keepers and vets from Beijing Zoo provided Ya Ya with all-day care, due to her old age and changed living environment. Shanghai Zoo offered support and ensured her safety and health. Beijing Zoo has prepared a special feeding place for Ya Ya as well as specially-made feeding measures, care, medical support and nutrition plans.
On Sunday afternoon, Beijing Zoo received a special delivery of fresh bamboo from Chengdu, Sichuan province.

Music can move people in many ways. But for people with dementia(痴呆症), music can do much more. Listening to music or singing can help calm people with dementia and can even help revive some memories. This is why this unique choir was formed by Anne Gemmell, a Lourdes Hospital dementia counselor in Dubbo, Australia.
The choir was formed in July, 2022 with just 25 singers but it has grown to 80 people. And it is already making a difference for the participants. “With the Sing Out Choir, we are seeing social relationships improve,” Gemmell told Dubbo Photo News. “The choir is bringing together a community of like-minded people with similar personalities and common interests.” Gemmell added that there are many positive changes in the behavior of the choir members with dementia. “Singing and music fire neurons(神经元)in the brain and we actually see people come alive,” Gemmell told ABC News. “We are seeing language skills improving with conversation and just mood changing. We’re seeing people more cheerful and happier in their behaviour,” she said.
The choir spent nine months practising for its first major performance on April 30, 2023 at the Dubbo Regional Theatre. The theater was packed with families and friends from around the region. One choir member, retired railway worker Les Orton, 77, said he made new friends at the choir practice and reconnected with old friends he hadn’t seen for years.
Singing in choirs has become increasingly popular in recent years and the benefits of improving brain function and promoting community is not just limited to people with dementia. Anyone of any age can enjoy all the benefits.
8. Why was the Sing Out Choir formed?
A. To move people in many ways. B. To assist people with dementia.
C. To improve people’s singing skills. D. To develop people’s interest in singing.
9. What have the members benefited from the choir?
A. They have become more confident. B. They have learned how to sing well.
C. They have developed a strong personality. D. They have become happier and more social.
10. What is Les Orton’s attitude towards the choir?
A. Uninterested. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
11. What can be a suitable tile for the text?
A. A Unique Choir in Australia. B. A Choir Benefits Dementia Patients.
C. A Community for Dementia Patients. D. A Kind-hearted Woman Founded a Choir.

With summer just around the corner, hot weather is sure to follow. It means that staying hydrated (含水的) while exercising or working outdoors is a must. But many people don’t drink enough water or are even aware of how much or little they are consuming. A company Israel named ImpacX has a solution for that, a new smart water bottle that tells you when you have to drink.
It relies on a smart cap that measures how much water is left in the bottle and reminds you to drink by vibrating (振动), changing colors, or sending a message to your phone. All the technology fits into the ordinary looking bottle cap. What ImpacX has developed is a kind of smart packaging platform that includes three elements.
First, the technology that tracks the water level is embedded (嵌入) in the cap. The amount you drink is worked out by sending a beam of light inside the bottle and then measuring how long it takes to reach the cap. But the second element is even more impressive. The smart cap is connected to an app that helps you personalize your hydration needs. You need to input your weight and age. And, you can even connect your smart bottle to a fitness app. “If you have a particular target, let’s say you practice some sport activity or you want to meet some other goals, there are particular modules in the app that you can say, “I’m now about to run,” or you can even connect it to your sports tracker.
ImpacX has launched the smart bottle in Israel and plans to introduce it into other countries. The company has already signed an agreement with a sports drink company.
Staying hydrated is serious business and smart water bottles can help you stay healthy and feeling your best even in the summer heat
12. How does the smart water bottle remind users to drink?
A. By making a nice sound. B. By connecting to an app.
C. By changing colors of the water. D. By sending a message to the phone.
13. What do we know about the three elements of the smart packaging platform?
A. The technology that tracks the water level is placed on the cap.
B. The smart bottle can not be connected to a workout application.
C. The amount you drink is worked out by measuring the temperature.
D You need to input your weight and age to meet your hydration needs.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. The smart bottle may have a bright future.
B. The smart bottle is still being tested in Israel.
C. The smart bottle has been on sale in several countries.
D. The smart bottle is just intended for sports drink companies.
15. What is the text mainly about?

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
From the time I was seven, I had a dream of becoming a member of the Students Union. I always admired my school leaders for taking responsibility for all of us. So I dreamed of being a leader.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to take part in the elections, hoping I would win. But the reality struck that I hadn’t had a chance. I wasn’t pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was upset.
As I cried in my room that evening, I suddenly took a deep breath and decided I wouldn’t stop dreaming. I decided that I would enter for elections again in my final year at school — and I would win.
I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. What were the points that would work in my favor? I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strengths was the faith I had. I would not allow my plain appearance to hold me back from putting my best foot forward. That evening, I began my election plans a whole year in advance.
I realized that girls would have to get to know me and recognize that I had the ability to represent them. I loved making friends and I liked being helpful, so I decided that perhaps I could use these qualities to work to my advantage. In order to learn how to give a great election speech, I also attended a course on public speaking. When the election came, I had a good speech and I delivered it with more confidence than I had the year before.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
The day after the election, every minute seemed like an hour while I waited for the results.
