    Canyoning
The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.
It was first done in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people jump from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).
    Diving
Diving is not popular with British people. The difficulties of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough, but the coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have some of the best diving in the world.
The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133, www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688, www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills.
    Surfing
The best surfing places in the UK are on the southwest coast where it is warmer, especially in Cornwall. The best time of year to surf in the UK is late summer and autumn.
The British Surfing Association (01479 861256, www.britsurf.co.uk) has a list of famous surf schools around the country.
    Rock climbing
The most popular natural rocks in Britain include the Peak District, the Lake District, while large areas of Scotland are a climber’s ideal place. Climbing courses and climbing walls can be found on the website of the British Mountaineering Council (0870 010 4878, www.thebmc.co.uk).

An American teacher who helped make college education accessible to low-income, immigrant, first-generation American, and refugee (难民) pupils has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Keishia Thorpe, an English teacher in Maryland, was selected from more than 8,000 teachers in 121 countries.
Ms. Thorpe teaches English to 12th-graders at the International High School Langley Park, where 95 percent of pupils are from low-income families. She redesigned their courses for the English department to make it culturally relevant to her pupils who are from mostly Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and South America. Since then, her English language learners have shown a 40 percent increase in their reading.
Ms. Thorpe spent a lot of time encouraging her pupils to apply for college and helped them with their applications and accessing fully-funded scholarships. She helped her senior pupils in 2018–2019 win more than $6.7 million in scholarships to 11 colleges, with most of them not having to pay for their education.
She plans to use the prize money to give less well-off pupils an opportunity of receiving a third level education. “Every person deserves the right to education and I want to be that person who champions that for them. I plan to use the money to help students worldwide access higher education,” she said. “Students are the reason I’m here, so I plan to use that to promote them and create a better future for them.”
Organized by UNESCO and first awarded in 2015, the Global Teacher Prize is an annual award to a teacher who has made a vast difference to the profession. The winner of this year was announced at a virtual ceremony in Paris on November 10th, 2021.

The world is on a fast track toward an autonomous future. From off-road tractors and rural transit systems to air vehicles and space exploration, automation will enhance safety, increase efficiency and improve people’s lives. The more we can automate, the more we can protect people’s life and happiness.
To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division. At the HxGN LIVE Global 2022 event, he gave an overview of assured positioning and demonstrated how it provides the foundation for safe autonomy.
Ritter explained how positioning technologies can enable the future of autonomy for good publicity across industries including agriculture, mining and automotive. “We’ve all heard about autonomy,” he said. “What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.” He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, the non-consumer world, we can’t have that,” he added. “We need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” “If that is not a hundred percent waterproof, crystal clear, and protected from outside interference (干扰) and cybersecurity threats, you can’t trust that positioning,” he said. “We have to know where we are at all times, and we cannot have that signal falsified (歪曲).”
While Ritter doesn’t think he’ll see the universal use of autonomous vehicles in passenger traffic during his lifetime “because laws will be in the way,” he said applications in “off-road autonomy—construction, mining and agriculture—are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem,” he said. “This is happening right now. We don’t have to wait 10 to 20 years for that.”
However, a big safety challenge in expanding autonomy is anticipating all the corner cases, or “all the stuff that could happen once in a lifetime,” Ritter said. Those can be overcome by real-life testing, multiplying that with simulation (模拟) “a hundred million times over,” and then going “back into real life” and performing “real, extreme Testing.”
    28.What’s Ritter’s purpose of mentioning Tesla’s AutoPilot?
A.To show its good publicity. B.To advocate its assured positioning.
C.To put forward reliable autonomy solutions. D.To serve as a reminder for the non-consumer world.
29.What is Ritter’s attitude towards the development of autonomy according to paragraph 4?
    A.Cautious. B.Optimistic. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.
30.What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Real and extreme testing. B.Real-life testing.
C.A big safe challenge. D.Expanding autonomy.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.Big challenges for future automation. B.The impact of automation on daily life.
C.Necessary regulations for safe automation. D.Different fields of automation development.

The robots are alive, and now they can reproduce.
That’s not a continuation to “The Terminator” It's the latest result of research among scientists at Harvard and the University of Vermont. These xenobots, named for the African frog Xenopus laevis, could move around and display collective behavior.
The researchers took stem cells (干细胞) from the skin of frog and put them in salt water, where they came together into balls with a covering of cilia, which are similar to small hairs and enable the organisms (生物体) to move. The scientists noticed that these organisms, xenobots, would collect any particles (粒子) placed in the dish to make piles. They started to wonder whether the tiny robots would do the same thing with individual stem cells, so they conducted a test.
Knowing that xenobots5 shapes affect their behavior, the researchers tried to figure out which form would help the organism to reproduce repeatedly. They discovered that a “C” shape seemed to be the best. The C-shaped xenobots gathered individual stem cells into groups, which became xenobots of their own. This type of reproduction is based on the organisms’ movement, rather than growing and then forming a new being as other animals and plants do.
Xenobots are on an unusual line between living organisms and robots. They are organisms because they are made of stem cells and can reproduce. But they are also robots because they can move on their own and perform physical labor. Although most robots are made of metal, robots are given the definition not by their material, but by what they can do.
Before now, Kriegman, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, said, “no one has been using living materials as self-moving, self-powered robots.” The researchers hope that the xenobots can help them better understand the process of reproduction —a fundamental quality of life —and how to control it. Faced with a world full of self-reproducing problems, such as Covid-19, Kriegman said studying xenobots could lead scientists closer to solutions.
32.What inspired the researchers to perform an experiment?
A.The position of particles. B.The gathering of stem cells.
C.The movement of organisms. D.The collective ability of xenobots.
33.What is special about the C-shaped xenobots reproduction?
A.It's repeated constantly. B.It generates new beings.
C.It separates individual stem cells. D.It's based on xenobots’ motion.
34.How are xenobots defined as robots?
A.By their function. B.By their reproduction.
C.By their unique component. D.By their physical appearance.
35.What can be inferred about the research from the last paragraph?
A.It could make a breakthrough. B.It would bring scientists closer.
C.It could find the secret of reproduction. D.It would discover the solution to Covid-19.

I am not sure how many books I have reread, but perhaps it is fewer than the average person. 36 The reading material, though, is of course not new.
I used to take the same approach to books as I did to travel: don’t go to the same place twice. Life is too short. 37 Then I realized that the fact that life is short might work the other way around too: if you know you enjoy something, or somewhere, then why not return?
Recently I reread Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. I was inspired to do so when reminded of how he’d respond when people rudely asked him why he’d never written anything as good: “Who has?” Catch-22pretty much saved my life when I first read it. 38 I had dropped out of school twice, didn’t leave the house at all and didn’t have a life. It felt as though I hadn’t laughed in such a long time.
39 It managed to take me out of the dark world, and though its themes are, of course, serious its cleverness cheered me greatly. I related to its characters who are themselves trapped. I am now planning to reread the sort of books that inspired me in my own writing.
I won’t take a break altogether from reading the most recent releases. I love the smell of new books fresh from the printers. 40 .
    A.Catch-22 had me laughing.
    B.My favourite are secondhand editions.
C.There is discomfort in reading recently-released books.
D.At that time, I was an extremely depressed 17-year-old.
E.For me, the pleasure of rereading is a newly discovered one.
F.There is so much to read and so much to see and experience.
G.However, I have determined to read the old ones more frequently.

Given what we know about colors and their many symbolic 61 (mean), it seems like it’d be safe to assume that each color featured in the Olympic rings would stand 62 something specific, like a continent. 63 in reality, that’s not the case at all. Coubertin 64 (choose) the six official Olympic colors——blue, yellow, black, green, red and white (featured in the background)——because when he introduced the symbol in 1913, every single flag of the nations 65 (participate) in the games could be reproduced using the colors in the Olympic symbol. Matawan River by himself. But he had the idea that someone or something was watching him.
And then he saw a large gray fin(鳍)slicing through the water like a knife. What was that? Could it be a shark? That was impossible! Elm Hills was miles and miles from the ocean. How could a shark find its way into this little river?

The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open and its white teeth shining in its blooded mouth. Those killer eyes stared at Chet. And then, with a flick of its tail, the shark pushed itself backward into the water, and disappeared down the river.

M: So Lucy, what do you think of the people working here in the news office?

W: Yes, and Carol’s fun to be with. I really look forward to hearing her jokes every day. What do you think of Tom?

W: Welcome to Swaleford Museum. Our exhibition “The History of Swaleford in Ten Objects” is very popular. We chose ten significant objects from the museum.
    M: How did you choose?
W: We concentrated mostly on the objects that have made a big impact on people’s lives. For example, you’ll see an old blackboard. This is an object that changed the lives of hundreds of people. It helped children learn how to read and write. These skills helped them find interesting jobs. The present display is half of the final exhibition. The second part will be held next month.
M: Is there any difference between them?
W: For the second part, we are asking local residents to lend us items that they feel are significant. It might be a photo of your grandparents’ wedding, an old teapot that has been in your family for years, or a football shirt the local team used to wear twenty years ago.
M: Oh, I’ll tell this news to my grandfather. He was on a football team years ago.
W: Thanks. Our local newspaper will print photos of your objects. Residents can vote for the top ten significant objects for the other half of the exhibition. The results will be available on the museum website.

M: Don’t you have to buy any green vegetables? Oh, no, what a long checkout line! Do we have to stand in that line?
W: Yes, we do, but don’t worry. The cashier can deal with each customer very quickly. But today, since we came in your Mini Cooper, I’m afraid both of us and the groceries can’t fit in your car. Could we please take the taxi back instead?

Welcome to the Funky Farm. This open-air museum gives you an experience of agriculture and rural life in the English countryside in the 19th century. Before we go any further, first I must remind you that if you have brought dogs with you, please keep them in the car park. Now let me tell you about the arrangements of the farm. The building where you bought your tickets is the Wish Barn. And now we’re at the beginning of the main path to the farmland -and the car park is on your left. If you want to go to the cafe, go towards the bridge and the cafes on the first bend you come to. The building was originally a schoolhouse, and it’s well over 100 years old. As you may know, we run skills workshops here, where you can learn traditional crafts like woodwork and basket-making. Now I shouldn’t forget to tell you about picnicking. 26. Thorpe spent a lot of time encouraging her pupils to apply for college and helped them with their applications and accessing fully-funded scholarships. She helped her senior pupils in 2018–2019 win more than $6.7 million in scholarships to 11 colleges, with most of them not having to pay for their education.( Thorpe女士花了很多时间鼓励她的学生申请大学,帮助他们申请并获得全额奖学金。她在2018-2019年帮助她的高年级学生赢得了11所大学超过670万美元的奖学金,其中大多数学生无需支付学费)”以及倒数第二段“She plans to use the prize money to give less well-off pupils an opportunity of receiving a third level education. “Every person deserves the right to education and I want to be that person who champions that for them. It doesn’t always work as advertised.(其中的一个大问题是什么?它并不总是像宣传的那样有效。)”以及“ He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, the non-consumer world, we can’t have that,” he added. “We need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” (他以特斯拉的自动驾驶仪为例。“在我们这个行业,在非消费领域,我们不能这样做,”他补充说。“我们需要我们可以信任的自主解决方案。”)”可知,此处Ritter提到Tesla’s AutoPilot的目的是给消费者提醒,Tesla’s AutoPilot实际提供的功能并不如所宣传的那样有效。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段中“he said applications in 'off-road autonomy—construction, mining and agriculture—are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem,' he said.'This is happening right now.

They started to wonder whether the tiny robots would do the same thing with individual stem cells, so they conducted a test.(科学家们注意到,这些有机体,异种机器人,会收集放在盘子里的任何颗粒并堆积起来。
根据第三段的“They discovered that a “C” shape seemed to be the best. The C-shaped xenobots gathered individual stem cells into groups, which became xenobots of their own. This type of reproduction is based on the organisms’ movement, rather than growing and then forming a new being as other animals and plants do.( 他们发现“C”形似乎是最好的。这种 C形异种机器人将单个的干细胞聚集成一组,形成了自己的异种机器人。这种类型的繁殖是基于这个有机体的运动,而不是像其他动物和植物那样生长然后形成一个新的生物。)”可知,关于C形异种机器人的再创能力,其特殊之处是它基于运动。故选D。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“Although most robots are made of metal, robots are given the definition not by their material, but by what they can do.(虽然大多数机器人是由金属制成的,但机器人的定义不是根据它们的材料,而是由它们能做什么来定义的。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段的“Before now, Kriegman, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, said, “no one has been using living materials as self-moving, self-powered robots. (在此之前,哈佛大学的博士后研究员克里格曼说,“还没有人使用生命材料用作自动移动、自动供电的机器人。”)”可推断,这项研究可能会取得重大突破。故选A。

故选A。
40.根据上文“I won’t take a break altogether from reading the most recent releases. However, I have determined to read the old ones more frequently.(然而,我决定更频繁地阅读旧的)能够衔接上文,符合语境。故选G。

The shark was closer to the surface now, its black eyes almost glowing. They all screamed at Sid, but Sid still didn't move. The shark was getting closer.
Before he had a chance to think, Chet was in the water, leaving Monty and Dewey on the dock. He swam as fast as he could toward Sid, grabbed hold of Sid's arm and pulled him. Monty and Dewey were at the edge of the dock, reaching down for them. Sid lifted himself up and Chet planted his hands on the dock. Chet was almost out of the water when something caught his leg "It's got my leg!" Chet screamed. “Pull!" Sid shouted. They pulled until Chet's leg finally came free! Chet was injured, but to his relief, his friends were safe.
