It’s likely that you don’t think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed, whether it’s a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you’re watching.
Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups like the ones you see on your computer.
You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to sign away your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.
When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.
You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It’s not always so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click “off”, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”. With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.
Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that's a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.
4. What might the marketers use your viewing habits to do?
A. To improve the quality of smart TVs.
B. To collect some suggestions about shows.
C. To recommend shows or advertise products.
D To build a strong relationship between produces and customers.
5. How does Consumer Reports find the comment made by an LG representative?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Reasonable. D. Approving.
6. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. How we learn to use TVs’ settings. B. How we can become wise customers.
C. How we send personal information to others. D. How we stop our viewing from being tracked.
7. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. It’s worthwhile to turn marketing features off.
B. People should keep their watching habits a secret.
C. TVs’ marketing features should be further developed.
D. TV producers should apologize to customers for their misbehavior.
C 5. B 6. D 7. A
根据第二段“Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups like the ones you see on your computer.(你的观看习惯对于营销人员来说是很有价值的信息,他们可能想要利用这些信息来介绍新的节目,或者在你已经在观看的节目中添加关于某些产品的额外内容。这些广告主要是弹出式广告,就像你在电脑上看到的那样)”可知,营销人员会利用你的观看习惯推荐节目或宣传产品。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time. (当《消费者报告》向制造商发送电子邮件询问他们如何使用这项技术时,三星和Vizio的代表没有发表任何评论。LG的一位代表说,公司没有使用任何数据发送个性化广告,也没有这样做的计划。但《消费者报告》表示,这种情况随时可能改变)”可知,《消费者报告》对LG代表的评论表示怀疑。故选B。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It's not always so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click "off”, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”. With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.(你可能会想,“为什么我不把那些营销功能关掉呢?”这并不总是那么容易。为了阻止制造商的跟踪,你必须通过菜单设置来争取。在LG手机上,点击“设置”,然后是“选项”,然后是“Live plus”,点击“关闭”,然后关闭。Vizio通过三个菜单来关闭“智能交互”功能。对三星来说,要找到“SyncPlus and Marketing”的盒子来禁用它也需要类似的过程)”可知,第五段的主要思想是我们如何阻止我们的观看被跟踪。故选D。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that's a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.(《消费者报告》表示,禁用该营销功能可能会导致你失去与你正在观看的节目相关的额外场景。但也许这是一个小小的代价,因为你知道你所看到的仍然是隐私)”可知,A选项“关掉营销功能是值得的”作者会同意。故选A。

He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin's mazurkas(马祖卜舞曲). Almost overnight, he became a national hero. To China, Mr. Fou's recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West. Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr. Fou, while many others sought out his father, Fu Lei, for advice on child-rearing.
In 1981, a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr. Fou, was published in China. Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Lei's Family, Letters became a best-seller in China. Besides influencing a generation of Chinese, Mr. Fu's words resonated(共鸣)long after his death with the person for whom they were intended.
"My father had a saying that 'First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist.'" Mr. Fou once recalled in an interview. "Even now, I believe in this order-that it should be this way and that I am this way."

根据第二段的最后一句话“To prepare for the fifth Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955,he practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition,”(为了准备1955年在华沙举行的第五届肖邦比赛,他刻苦练习,结果在第一轮比赛中伤了手指,差点被切伤。)

Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for two of the country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use liners (活衬里) from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and portable,” Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and it created 110 sleeping bags last December.
Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of saving bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty are often closely related. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com: “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The final goal of Chip Bag Project. B. The basic rules of Chip Bag Project.
C. The main work of Chip Bag Project. D. The significance of Chip Bag Project.
13. What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project?
A. Its size is adjustable. B. It is easy to carry around.
C. It has the function of heating. D. It is only made of old coats.
14. Which of the following statements does Oleita probably agree with?
A. Making sleeping bags is easier than buying new ones.
B. Poverty and environmental problems go hand in hand.
C. Making sleeping bags is the best way to help the homeless.
D. Environmental problems have little impact on the homeless.
15. Which of the following best describes Oleita?
A. Caring and creative. B. Brave and optimistic. C. Honest and determined. D. Talented and easy-going.
C 13. B 14. B 15. A

根据文章第一段“The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.( 这位来自底特律的26岁学生兼环保主义者请求当地小吃爱好者帮个忙:与其把你的空薯片袋扔进垃圾桶,不如把它们捐了,这样她就可以把它们变成无家可归者的睡袋。)”可知,用空薯片袋给无家可归的人做睡袋,这是很有创造力的想法;根据文章最后一段“It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty are often closely related. Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. ___16___
Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. In the same way, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear.___17___ By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of year ago, which is really quite exciting.
___18___ You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.___19___ Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotion. How do you know that I am angry? Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.___20___ Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down. I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
A. Both vary with culture.
B. Here are some of their similarities.
C. They have some distinguishing characteristics.
D. So just as you read English, you can read music.
E. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.
F. This also means that there is something for everyone!
B 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. E
根据上文“Both language and music play a huge role in our culture.”(语言和音乐在我们的文化中扮演着重要的角色),下文讲语言和音乐的共同点。
根据标题“Both language and music have a writing system.”(语言和音乐都有书写系统,它们分别有自己的书写符号)再根据上文“Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear.”(正如你在屏幕上阅读这组字母并从中找到意义一样,音乐家们阅读笔记并以我们能听到的音乐形式创造意义。)
根据下文“You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use.In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation”(通过听某人使用的语言,你可以很好地猜测他来自哪里。 故选A。
根据上句“In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation”(同样,我们知道,世界各地的音乐风格各不相同,这让我们有机会通过他们的音乐探索许多不同的文化,并为我们提供适合各种情况的音乐)”可知,不同风格的音乐给我们了解不同文化的机会,所以选项承接上文,说明上文所述内容的意义是什么。
根据上句“Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.”(我们可以通过面部表情和语言来判断一个人的情感),根据下文“Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion.”(音乐可以向你展示作曲家的真实感受)。 angry, sad or happy呼应故feeling。

Earlier this week I was at a store after the holiday season, and while waiting in line I ___21___ a very stressed-out Dad with his two sons waiting in line to purchase a car seat for the younger child.

The cashier was _____31_____ in the same mood as I was in wanting to help this young family; and took the money toward his order with a smile on her face—the seat _____32_____ coming to around $50 instead of the original $90.

Pumpkin(南瓜)carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞)forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1. 所续写短文词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 2:
That video was posted the day before Halloween.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Dad was summoned-less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned, said Mom; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video to Facebook, but it was only then I realized she’d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue-Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mom could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp.
Paragraph 2
The video was posted the Monday, before Halloween. By the end of that day, it had over 1, 000 views. People asked Mom to put it on Youtube, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5: 00 am call from TV breakfast shows and then the international media-the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin? ”before taking selfies with it.
