(2020·广州高三年级调研测试)Entering adulthood is an important step in everyone's life.It means that a young person must soon leave childishness behind and start to shoulder grownup responsibilities.
In Germany,“Jugendfeier”is a comingofage ceremony for 14yearolds.They go to school to prepare for the occasion, studying lessons with topics like cultural respect and social responsibility, which will help them become worthy citizens. The hope is that the young people taking part in the ceremony will take on these values for themselves.
In Latin America,a“quinceañera”is a celebration for girls on their 15th birthday, marking a girl's entry into womanhood. In the past,a“quinceañera”was intended to ready girls for marriage and they were taught cooking, sewing and other household skills in preparation.Today,it's similar to how one's 18th birthday is considered an important day in other cultures.
In India, the sacred thread ceremony is performed when a boy is grownup. He is given three sacred threads representing three promises he makes:to respect knowledge,to respect his parents and to respect society. After the ceremony, the boy, traditionally, leaves his family to live with a guru (teacher). At this point the boy becomes“twice born”—first his physical birth and second his intellectual birth through the teacher's care.
In Vanuatu, young boys come of age by jumping off a 98foottall tower with a bungeelike rope tied to their ankles, just barely preventing them from hitting the ground. At the ceremony, the boy's mother will hold something representing his childhood, and after the jump the item will be thrown away, representing the end of childhood. He is now a man, ready to protect the family.

(2022·湖北十一校高三第一次联考)As 16yearold Torri'ell Norwood drove through Florida, last February, the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached an intersection, another car crashed them, sending their car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree.
As smoke rose from the car,a bystander shouted,“It's about to blow up!Get out!”Shaken but OK,Norwood crawled out through the window as the driver's side door couldn't be opened.Along with two of her friends, who'd also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life. But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend,Simmons, wasn't with them.Norwood ran back and found Simmons unconscious in the back seat. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out.She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. After checking her pulse and found there was no sign of life, she started CPR.
Had the accident happened a few weeks earlier, she might not have known what to do.But just the day before,Norwood, who wanted to pursue a career in medicine, had earned her CPR certificate by learning on her own.Kneeling on the lawn and looking down at her dying friend,Norwood knew she had precious little time to practice what she'd learned.
She started pumping Simmons's chest with her interlocked fingers and breathing into her friend's mouth in the hope of filling her lungs with the kiss of life. After quite a while,Simmons began coughing and taking quick deep breaths for air.The CPR had worked!Soon, the ambulance arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. And then she heard how her best friend had saved her life.“I am not shocked,”Simmons told others.“She will always help any way she can.”
