The US writer, J.D．Salinger (1919-2010), was one of the most influential(有影响力的) writers of the last century. His writing is popular with all age groups, but young people are especially big fans of his.
The reason he has such a following is undoubtedly because of his novel, The Catcher in the Rye(《麦田里的守望者》), which was published in 1951. The hero of this story is named Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troublemaker at school and has difficulty fitting in with others, whether they are adults or people of his own age. However, Holden has a heart of gold. Many readers have been moved by the protective attitude he has toward young children, especially his little sister Phoebe. Millions of people all over the world have taken the troubled 17-year-old Holden into their hearts.
Salinger didn’t actually write that much in his life. Besides The Catcher in the Rye, he published only a few other shorter works, and then, after 1965, nothing at all. The reason for this seems to be that he hated publicity(关注). He had become famous with the success of this novels and didn’t care for the fame(名望). He refused to give interviews and did not allow anyone to write his biography(自传). He came to hate publicity so much that he stopped publishing his writing.
But Salinger still kept on writing. It’s said that he wrote eight other novels. Fans of his work hope that one day they will be able to read these “lost” Salinger books.

As climate change gets worse, global temperatures increase, and so does the risk of wildfires. A recent report from the United Nations shows that wildfires are becoming more common and severe. Wildfires have caused many problems across countries. These fires destroy (毁坏) homes and businesses, take lives and also damage the environment.
A wildfire in New Mexico, a state in the southwestern US, burned for nearly two months in 2022, damaging more than 1,275 km2 of land—an area about the size of the city of Los Angeles. Wildfires have created seasonal pollution in the northwestern US. Between 2002 and 2018, carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) levels increased every year for the month of August in the area.
In 2019 and 2020, Australian wildfires filled the air with deadly clouds of smoke and killed thousands of koalas. Around 437,000 people had to take in air with a PM2.5 concentration (浓度) of at least 25 mg/cm3 of air. That’s more than the 15 mg/cm3 of air that the World Health Organization (WHO) considers acceptable.
In the last 10 years, the total number of forest fires in China every year has increased to more than 2,000 cases. Wildfires lead to great loss of animals, forests and people. What’s worse, some animals become endangered and some people have to move to other places to live. Greater Hinggan Mountains (大兴安岭) is one of the important forestry places in China. The government uses mountain watchtowers, forest cameras and aerial drones (无人机) to prevent forest fires in summer.

There are three famous snow mountains standing in Daocheng Yading, protecting the people around them. Yangmaiyong is the greatest one. Back in 1928, an American named Joseph Rock first took photos of it and introduced it to the world, “She is the most beautiful snow mountain I have ever seen,” he wrote.
