Now 68, Swale, a former chemist, travels around the world as a pet-sitter Last year, she spent only 23 nights in her own bed. Pet sitting stops include places all over the world and she enjoys visiting them while working.
Swale had always wanted to travel. However, after her marriage, life got busy just raising her kids. To give them as table base, she had set all those travel wishes aside. But having been divorced twice, Swale had finally reached a different understanding of herself: “I can discover the most joy in life myself.” She decided to do some pet-sitting, living on her pension (养老金) .
The first pet-sitting job was half an hour from home. “I loved animals. But I thought: you don’t know whose house you’re going into, what treats you’ll get, if the dog will bite you or the cat run away...Is at in the car for about 10 minutes, working my courage up to ring the doorbell.”
But everything turned out well. Although her money was tight — there is no pay for pet-sitting, only free accommodation — she made it work. Now, Swale doesn’t stop to think. She has cycled around Sanibel Island with a little dog in her basket and taken a kitty out for dinner in New Zealand. Her next stop is Florida, where she will look after a cat and three geckos (壁虎). “So long as my heath holds out, so long as I get joy out of it, I will keep doing it.”
Doesn’t she miss having a fixed home? “The world is my home,” she says. “You’re living in their home, you’re walking in their neighborhood, you have their pets and chat to their neighbors — you are living as if you live there. It’s like borrowing somebody else’s life for a minute. And I learn something from every sit I do.”
    1.Why did Swale start pet-sitting?
    A.To understand herself.
    B.To find pleasure in life.
    C.To earn some extra money.
    D.To realize her travel wishes.
2.What can we learn about Swale’s first pet-sitting?
A.It went quite smoothly. B.She got high pay for it.
C.She was unfairly treated. D.It totally changed her life.
3.What does Swale think of her job?
    A.Skilled. B.Creative. C.Rewarding. D.Challenging.

The trend towards larger cars is obvious in recent years. Electric SUVs (越野车) have also been growing in popularity, representing roughly 35 percent of electric car sales in 2022, according to the latest figures released by the International Energy Agency. But although electrification of the global vehicle brings climate benefits, there is also cause for concern.
Electric SUVs are still greener than the petrol (汽油) ones, but their size and weight removes some of the climate gains. Their larger batteries require more raw minerals (矿物), like cobalt and lithium, putting extra pressure on global supplies. “New policies to encourage people to choose smaller electric vehicles (EV) may be needed, such as increasing taxes for Electric SUVs. We could reduce hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) overtime.” says Christian Brand at the University of Oxford.
Air pollution is another worry. In poorer countries like India, electric vehicles will lead to significant improvements in urban air quality. But in richer countries, where petrol cars tend to be cleaner, the situation isn’t so clear. “The benefit of moving to an electric vehicle, from a certain point of view, is actually pretty small,” says Frank Kelly at Imperial College London. And since electric vehicles still produce pollution from their tires, brakes and road wear, air pollution won’t fully go away. “We’re still going to have a pretty big problem in our cities,” says Kelly.
As such, governments must do more to reduce car dependency, particularly in urban areas. Clean public transport is the solution to our air pollution problem in urban areas. We should be reducing the number of all private vehicles as much as possible, not celebrating the increased figures.
4.What can we learn about the Electric SUVs?
    A.They greatly improve air quality.
B.They are not as green as expected.
C.They will not become globally popular.
D.They sold better than petrol ones in 2022.
    5.What do Kelly’s words suggest?
A.The trend towards EVs is not clear.
B.Petrol cars produce less air pollution.
C.EVs may not have the desired effects.
D.Petrol cars are cheaper in rich countries.
6.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.Start an argument and call on action.
    B.Express concerns and suggest solutions.
    C.Introduce products and attract attention.
    D.Compare products and offer suggestions.

In the 1950s, researchers found that bus drivers were twice as likely to have heart attacks as bus conductors. Since then, dozens of studies have found links between sitting and a variety of illnesses, with a 2013 analysis of studies concluding: “Higher amounts of daily siting time are linked with greater risk of death.”
Too much sitting will cause postural(姿势的) problems, including knee pain and lower back pain. Studies have found a connection between long-time sitting and different forms of bone and muscle pain as well as neck pain.
You can ease this problem to some extent by making some movements. However, being very active doesn’t entirely protect you from siting too long. You could run for an hour every morning and meet the government guidelines for physical activity, but then sit down for the rest of the day -which would mean sitting too long, in terms of risk.
There’s also the cardio-metabolic(心血管代谢) problem caused by long sitting. It’s not completely understood why sitting seems to be related to a range of health conditions, but the most reasonable explanation is that it puts your body at rest. When you do it for long enough, your metabolism slows. You are actually switching off some of your body’s largest muscles, with results that range from increased waist size to risks of illnesses.
So, what should you be doing? I’m proving your posture can be effective. At work, keeping your screen at eye level and your feet flat on the floor is a good start. The easiest way to make a significant difference, though, is to get up every 15, 30 or 60. Best of all, of course, is standing for a while once you are up. Ask yourself: Is there something you’re doing that doesn’t require you to sit down? Could you read your emails standing up? Could you go for a walk while you think?
Were you standing comfortably while you read this? Maybe you should have been.
7.Where is this text probably from?
    A.A sports guidebook.
    B.A science magazine.
    C.A newspaper advertisement.
    D.A working-instruction brochure.
8.What can we know about postural problems?
A.They feature pain in various body parts.
B.One-hour exercise can help to solve them.
C.They can be entirely corrected by movements.
D.Long runs can contribute to their development.
9.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning cardio-metabolic problem?
    A.Scientific research into it.
    B.Its harmful effects on health.
C.How it leads to people’s thick waists.
D.Why it is connected with long-sitting.
10.What is the best title for the text?
A.When Do You Need to Stand Up?
    B.Long Sitting: Negatives and Positives
    C.Long Sitting: Effects and Suggestions
D.How Long Do You Spend Sitting Down?

We all know that studying is boring. Every time you have to read a textbook or review for a test, you may start thinking of a million things you’d rather be doing like watching TV. 12
Let’s go through them, shall we?
Get interested in the topic. To be able to dive into different aspects of any topic, you can’t jump straight into the details. 13 That’s why we should teach children how to build something in a video game before encouraging them to read through History and Theory of Architecture.
Change your environment. Having an environment that’s helpful to focus can make you enjoy your work. One tip is to add in things that you enjoy. For example, I have carefully selected some music that can help me focus. Another thing you can try is to go to your favorite coffee shop or your own secret spot in the library when you need to study. 14
Get a study partner. Studying with a partner is great for making the act of studying less boring. 15 You might distract(分散注意) each other. For example, I tried to study with my roommate, but we usually ended up playing online games. Besides, if you have some super-smart study partners, they will do all the homework and then you won’t learn anything.
16 Your desire to do a task partly depends on the reward you’ll get for finishing it. Your pre-planned rewards can encourage you to work harder because you know you’ll get something fun after completing it.
A.Instead, you have to be excited about it first.
B.Provide rewards for those who do jobs well.
C.Create mini-rewards for studying in advance.
D.The key to finding study partners is to get those who focus on learning.
E.Personally, I’ve also found that having a good drink next to me helps a lot.
F.Today, we’ll be covering some tricks you can use to make studying more fun.
G.However, there are two main points of failure that you have to watch out for.

根据第二段第四句“But having been divorced twice, Swale had finally reached a different understanding of herself: “I can discover the most joy in life myself.”(但经历过两次离婚后,斯维尔终于对自己有了不同的认识:“我可以自己发现生活中最大的快乐。”)”
根据第四段前两句“But everything turned out well. Although her money was tight — there is no pay for pet-sitting, only free accommodation — she made it work.(但一切都很顺利。 故选A。
根据倒第二段最后一句“So long as my heath holds out, so long as I get joy out of it, I will keep doing it.(只要我的健康还在,只要我从中得到快乐,我就会继续做下去。)”和最后一段第三句中的“It’s like borrowing somebody else’s life for a minute. And I learn something from every sit I do.(这就像借用别人的生活一分钟。

根据第二段中的“Electric SUVs are still greener than the petrol(汽油) ones, but their size and weight removes some of the climate gains. 和第三段中的“And since electric vehicles still produce pollution from their tires, brakes and road wear, air pollution won’t fully go away.
根据第三段中Kelly的话“The benefit of moving to an electric vehicle, from a certain point of view, is actually pretty small (从某种角度来看,转向电动汽车的好处实际上很小)”可知,Kelly认为在一定程度上电动汽车带来的好处并不大,由此可推测出,电动汽车并没有达到想要的效果。故选C。
通读全文可知,第一段中的“But although electrification of the global vehicle brings climate benefits, there is also cause for concern. 引出论点,讲述了电动汽车有让人担心的地方,接下来第二、三段分别从体积和重量、空气污染两个方面谈论了让人担心的问题,并在最后一段“As such, governments must do more to reduce car dependency, particularly in urban areas. Clean public transport is the solution to our air pollution problem in urban areas. We should be reducing the number of all private vehicles as much as possible, not celebrating the increased figures.
    7.B 8.A 9.D 10.C

根据第一段“In the 1950s, researchers found that bus drivers were twice as likely to have heart attacks as bus conductors. Since then, dozens of studies have found links between sitting and a variety of illnesses, with a 2013 analysis of studies concluding: ‘Higher amounts of daily siting time are linked with greater risk of death.’(在20世纪50年代,研究人员发现公交车司机患心脏病的可能性是公交车售票员的两倍。
根据第二段“Too much sitting will cause postural(姿势的) problems, including knee pain and lower back pain. Studies have found a connection between long-time sitting and different forms of bone and muscle pain as well as neck pain.(久坐会导致姿势问题,包括膝盖疼痛和下背部疼痛。 故选A。
第四段首句“There’s also the cardio-metabolic(心血管代谢) problem caused by long sitting.(还有久坐引起的心血管代谢问题。)” 后文“It’s not completely understood why sitting seems to be related to a range of health conditions, but the most reasonable explanation is that it puts your body at rest. When you do it for long enough, your metabolism slows. You are actually switching off some of your body’s largest muscles, with results that range from increased waist size to risks of illnesses.(目前还不完全清楚为什么久坐似乎与一系列健康状况有关,但最合理的解释是久坐会让你的身体处于休息状态。
第一段中的“Since then, dozens of studies have found links between sitting and a variety of illnesses, with a 2013 analysis of studies concluding: ‘Higher amounts of daily siting time are linked with greater risk of death.’(自那以后,数十项研究发现了久坐与各种疾病之间的联系,2013年的一项研究分析得出结论:‘每天久坐的时间越长,死亡风险越大。’)” 第五段首句“So, what should you be doing?(那么,你应该做什么呢?)”

【详解】D项“When I began to teach English at a high school, I found that many of my students were hard-working on their own, but shy and not active in communicating with each other, even with their parents. C项“As Mother’s Day approached that year, my plan for the day was to give each of my students the opportunity to standup in front of the class and express his or her feelings towards his or her mother.(那年母亲节临近,我的计划是让我的每个学生都有机会站在全班同学面前,表达他或她对母亲的感情。)”具体讲述了作者改善学生与父母沟通的活动计划,与前文的“but shy and not active in communicating with each other, even with their parents”对照,所以应位于D项之后。B项“When the day of the event finally came, I observed in awe as my shy students each beautifully expressed their genuine love for their mothers.(当活动的日子终于到来时,我敬畏地看着我害羞的学生们每个人都美丽地表达了他们对母亲的真诚爱。)”讲述了这项活动进行的场面,选项中的“When the day of the event finally came”承接C项的“my plan for the day”,应位于C项之后。E项“I watched many of the mothers hold back tears as they were overcome with emotion and love for their children. Frankly, I could not hold back my own tears. I was so proud of my students. At the end of the event, most parents expressed their thanks to me, which inspired me to continue holding the event every year.(我看到许多母亲强忍着泪水,因为她们充满了对孩子的情感和爱。 讲述了这项活动产生的影响,选项中的“At the end of the event”承接B项的“When the day of the event finally came”,显示了时间先后顺序,应位于B项之后。A项“I realized then that my greatest joy in life was to share a connection and bring joy to others’ lives. I knew I would seek more ways to do that.(那时我意识到,我一生中最大的快乐就是分享一种联系,给别人的生活带来快乐。

Every time you have to read a textbook or review for a test, you may start thinking of a million things you’d rather be doing like watching TV.(我们都知道学习很无聊。
13.本段的主旨句是首句“Get interested in the topic.(对这个话题感兴趣。)” 前文“To be able to dive into different aspects of any topic, you can’t jump straight into the details.(为了能够深入到任何主题的不同方面,你不能直接进入细节。)” 故选A。
14.前文“For example, I have carefully selected some music that can help me focus. Another thing you can try is to go to your favorite coffee shop or your own secret spot in the library when you need to study.(例如,我精心挑选了一些可以帮助我集中注意力的音乐。
15.本段首句“Get a study partner.(找一个学习伙伴。)” 后文“You might distract(分散注意) each other.(你们可能会分散彼此的注意力。)”和“Besides, if you have some super-smart study partners, they will do all the homework and then you won’t learn anything.(此外,如果你有一些超级聪明的学习伙伴,他们会做所有的家庭作业,然后你什么都不会学到。)”
后文“Your desire to do a task partly depends on the reward you’ll get for finishing it. Your pre-planned rewards can encourage you to work harder because you know you’ll get something fun after completing it.(你想完成一项任务的欲望在一定程度上取决于你完成任务后会得到什么奖励。
