The US plans to build a base camp for astronauts on the moon. They’ll study how long-term space travel affects (影响) humans. The possibilities are exciting. But now that we have so many technologies for safely exploring (探索) space, do we really need to send people there? Some students give their opinions.
Elisha: The earth could become overpopulated (人口过多的). One day we may need to go to space to survive (生存). The moon base would be a step toward the bigger goal of reaching Mars. We need to find out if it’s possible to live on other planets. Robots can send back a lot of information, but it won’t be enough to help us understand how we’d survive on another planet. Only human exploration can prepare us for that future.
Kellen: Robots can collect information, but they can’t respond (回应) like humans in all situations. We couldn’t depend on them to develop a space colony (聚居地) that would be fit for humans.
Shaivi: Astronauts could become tired and stressed because of living in a spacecraft (航天器) for a long time. Robots can also perform well, or better than humans. They could stay on the moon or Mars for tens of years, doing research, with no danger to human life.
Lino: Sending robots costs less than sending humans. Robots can stay in space longer and don’t make mistakes. And robots’ lives are not at risk. If they break, they can be repaired or replaced.
16. What’s the US’s main purpose in building the base camp?
A. To collect information about Mars.

When I was a new junior high school student in autumn, 1980, God gave me a gift, and it was happiness.
One weekend, I went to visit my grandparents in the countryside. On my way home a car ran over me and cut off my arms because of its high speed. Several days later when I woke up at the hospital, I realized I had to spend the rest of my life without arms. How sad I felt at that time!
At first I was full of fears. But slowly I knew I had to face the fact and got over it. I couldn’t get my arms back even though I cried every day.
However, it’s easier said than done. It took me nearly half a year to get out of the sadness completely.
In our daily life, I often see my classmates get worried about little things: they get a bad grade on a test; their bus comes late; they don’t have a mobile phone but others have and so on.
But I only enjoy life. I was lucky to realize from the accident: It is a waste of our life to think about what you have lost. We should always think of what we have. Happiness depends on what we have! It’s in our heart.
It’s a state of mind (心境), even though you own the whole world, you may still feel unhappy.
Happiness comes from mastering the art of appreciating (感激) and taking pleasure in what you really have.
19. How old is the writer now according to what you infer (推断) from the story?
A. In his thirties. B. In his forties. C. In his fifties. D. In his sixties.

A. Several days. B. A week. C. The rest of his life. D. Almost six months.
21. How many little things that his classmates get worried about are mentioned?
A. Three. B. four. C. Five. D. Six.
22. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Happiness is a state of mind.
B. As long as we have the whole world, we will feel happy.
C. If we take pleasure in what we really have, we may get real happiness.
D. If we master the art of appreciating, we may know what real happiness is.

Morgiana, remembering Ali Baba’s orders, got his bathing linen (亚麻布澡巾) ready, and ordered Abdalla to set on the pot for the meat soup; but while she was preparing it the lamp went out, and there was no more oil in the house, nor any candles. What to do she did not know, for the meat soup must be made. Abdalla, seeing her very uneasy, said, “Don’t be worried, but go into the yard, and take some oil out of one of the jars.”
Morgiana thanked Abdalla for his advice, took the oil-pot, and went into the yard; when she came near the first of all the thirty-eight jars, the robber within (里面的强盗) said softly, “Is it time?”

On the late night of Christmas Eve, Mr. Smith, a shoe store keeper, went to close the door when he saw a poor boy through the window. Mr. Smith came close and said kindly, “Merry Christmas. May I help you?”
I’m begging God to give me a pair of shoes, Sir,” the poor boy said after a long time with hope in his eyes. Mrs. Smith asked her husband to give the boy what he wanted. But Mr. Smith shook his head and asked his puzzled wife to bring a pair of cotton socks and a basin (盆) of warm water.

What Is International Women’s Day?
The IWD has its roots in the social and labor movement in the United States.
It began in New York City on March 8, 1857, when women workers marched (游行) in protest (抗议) of unfair working conditions and unequal rights in clothing factories. The workers called for a shorter workday and better pay.
On March 8 of 1908, women workers again marched through New York City to protest child labor and poor working conditions, and call strongly for women’s right to vote (投票).
The first recorded celebration internationally was on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. At that time, over a million people came out to support women’s rights.
After World War II, several countries started to celebrate women’s day on March 8. Two years later, the U. N. officially regarded that date as International Women’s Day in 1977. Some countries, including China, Russia and Uganda, also regard it as a public holiday.
Past U. N. celebrations have included the important subjects of climate change, rural (农村的) women and HIV/AIDS.
And, since 2007, the U. S. State Department has presented the International Women of Courage Award to more than 180 women in 80 countries.
For this year’s International Women’s Day, U. N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (联合国秘书长安东尼奥·古特雷斯) said, “Let us work together-across governments, the private sector (私营部门) and civil (国内的) society-to build a more inclusive (包容广阔的), just, rich and successful world for women, girls, men, and boys everywhere.”

One possible version:
Mother Stops Him
This morning, I was riding my bike to school when I saw an old woman with a walking stick fell down to the ground in the street ahead. She couldn’t get up by herself. A (small) boy happened to walk by and wanted to lift her up. Just then, his mother stopped him and said, “Don’t do that, or others may think she was knocked down by you.” Hearing this, the boy left. I stopped in time to lift her up and went on to school.
I keep on thinking about this. In my opinion, Mother shouldn’t stop her son helping others. If people don’t trust each other, they won’t give a hand to people in trouble. If this happens, what will our world be like? I believe helping others is helping ourselves. I hope everyone can give out his love to make our world more beautiful.
