School bus drivers have to keep the kids safe on their way to and from school. But one driver, Patricia Reitz, goes way above and beyond. She has made it her mission to give each child a handmade hat to keep them warm in the winter.
Miss Patty—the name students, teachers and parents call her—has given away more than 7,000 hats in the nearly three decades she worked for the Clarence Central School District in New York, reported WGRZ.
“She cares about her students,” third grade teacher Deborah Bosworth told WGRZ. “Any student that has been on Miss Patty’s bus gets a hat, and they also get a friend. Miss Patty is one of the favorites.”
This tradition began when Reitz took up crocheting (针织). She would work on items while she waited for students to get on the bus after school. One boy got on the bus, and he asked what she was doing. He said wearing a hat would be great going down ski slopes (斜坡). So Reitz asked him what color he liked. “That started everything,” said Reitz. And it snowballed from there.
Reitz specializes in Santa hats, but she will make other hats too. The hats are two colors that the students choose and always have two tassels (流苏) Reitz buys all needed for the hats but she also receives gift cards from families especially around Christmas. This is a gift that comes from the heart. Despite the amount of work involved, Reitz has no intention of stopping. In fact, she has already began working on next year’s hats. “I’m going to do it until I can’t do it anymore,” she said.
While other school bus drivers will purchase hats and gloves for their charges, a homemade gift made with love brings warmth even during the coldest winter days.
    24. What did Patricia Reitz do for the students?
    A. She gives away hats to students on her bus for free.
    B. She made hats for students in exchange for gifts.
    C. She gives away hats to students with low charges.
    D. She made crocheting items on school bus
    25. What do students get along with a hat from Miss Patty?
    A. The way to make friends. B. The chance to help others.
    C. Love and warmth in cold winter. D. A different experience on school bus.
    26. Which of the following can best describe Miss Patty?
    A. Generous and absent-minded. B. Addicted and energetic.
    C. Calm and warm-hearted. D. Loving and determined.
    27. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
    A. Students have no choice of the hats.
    B. Making the hats demands great efforts.
    C. The hats are of the same color and style.
    D. Reitz has no intention of continuing the tradition.
    C
For centuries, people thought that fish did not feel pain or emotions. Now research has shown that fish not only have feelings but can also sense others’ moods.
When a human understands and shares the feelings of another person, this is called empathy (共情). Scientists have found that a chemical in the brain called oxytocin (催产素) is involved in our ability to connect with others.
A team of researchers tested zebra fish with a series of experiments. First, they placed the fish in two separate containers and gave one group a material that caused them to act fearful—either freezing or swimming irregularly. Even though the fish in the nearby container had not touched the material, they also began to freeze in fear. “They respond to other individuals being frightened… just like us,” said Ibukun, a co-author of the study. The scientists tried the experiment again with the changed fish whose brains would not produce oxytocin. These fish were much less likely to act anxious when they saw other fish showing fear. If researchers gave them an injection (注射) of oxytocin, their ability to empathize returned.
Finally, researchers played videos of fearful fish on one side of the container and relaxed fish on the other side. Normal fish moved closer to the side that showed the fearful fish, which might have been an attempt to comfort them. The changed fish did not move toward either side.
Looking at the normal fish’s brains, researchers saw activity in an area similar to the one humans and other mammals (哺乳动物) use when empathizing with others. This could mean that the ability to have empathy developed more than 350 million years ago, when fish and mammals shared a common ancestor.
    28. How many experiments did the researchers do?
    A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
    29. How did the researchers get the result of the experiments?
    A. By modeling. B. By comparison. C. By describing. D. By investigation.
    30. Which of the following is correct according to the passage?
    A. Fish and humans use the same brain area when empathizing.
    B. Fish always ignore others’ emotions.
    C. It wasn’t long before fish had empathy.
    D. Oxytocin plays a key role in empathy.
    31. What is the purpose of the research?
    A. To test whether fish and mammals share a common ancestor.
    B. To test whether fish have the ability to empathize.
    C. To test whether fish can comfort other fish.
    D. To test whether fish can produce oxytocin.

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter has completed its first test flight, marking a major milestone for the agency’s efforts to explore the red planet. The 4-pound helicopter took off from the Martian surface on Monday, hovering (盘旋) for about 30 seconds before landing back down.
The flight was powered by four lithium—ion (锂离子) batteries, which were recharged using solar panels on the helicopter. Because of the distance between Earth and Mars, engineers had to program the flight ahead of time and wait for the results to come back, making the entire process autonomous.
“This is a Wright brothers moment,” said MiMi Aung, project manager for Ingenuity at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “I can’t imagine what it took for Orville and Wilbur Wright to do their first flight, but I sure can tell you that the helicopter team poured their heart and soul into this and did everything they could imagine to make this successful.”
The helicopter was transported to Mars attached to NASA’s Perseverance rover (探月车), which arrived on the planet in February. Over the next few weeks, the team will test different sides of the helicopter’s capabilities, including up-and-down flights and flying longer distances.
The final goal of the mission is not only to show new technologies and gather more data on Mars, but also to pave the way for “searching missions” that can explore terrain that is inaccessible to rovers.
“This really sets the stage for us to introduce an aerial dimension (空中维度) to our exploration of planets in the solar system in the future,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
    32. What can we learn from the text?
    A. The helicopter flew from the Earth to Mars.
    B. The helicopter can deal with data on Mars.
    C. NASA may draw a more exact Mars map in the future.
    D. Wright brothers did their first flight effortlessly.
    33. How was the flight of the helicopter controlled?
    A. By remote control from Earth. B. By four lithium-ion batteries.
    C. By programming it in advance. D. By the perseverance rover.
    34. What does the underlined phrase “Wright brothers moment” mean in Paragraph 3?
    A. A highlight in aviation (航空) history.
    B. An ordinary moment in aviation history.
    C. A magic in aviation history.
    D. A tough moment in aviation history.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. A Demanding Mission
    B. A Major Milestone In History
    C. NASA’s Mars Helicopter Shows New Technologies
    D. NASA’s Mars Helicopter Completes First Test Flight

Michelle and I had been best friends since the fourth grade. She was a beautiful girl inside and out, one of the kindest I’d ever met. We were like paper and glue—completely inseparable.
It was in the eighth grade that things slowly started to change between Michelle and me. I became a social butterfly, flying around to different groups of friends, discussing the hottest gossip (八卦). Although I made many new friends that year, I still loved Michelle and wanted her to hang out with my new, fairly large social group. I tried to drag her along to my social gatherings, . but I soon noticed the disapproving (不赞成的) looks and whispers about Michelle—a clear message that she was not cool enough to hang out with us.
One night, one of my new friends, Jamie, came over after school. I was excited that she wanted to come over to my house and spend time with me. After a couple of hours of laughing and having a great time, Michelle’s name came up in our conversation. Slowly, a mischievous (恶意的) smile formed on Jamie’s face. Jamie ordered that I tell Michelle that Jamie was my best friend then. Afraid that my new friends would dislike me if I refused, just like they did to Michelle, I picked up the phone, dialed Michelle’s number and said it out to her without hesitation. She was more sad, heartbroken and angry than I’d expected, and as I listened to her cry over the phone, I remembered how close we used to be. At that moment, I realized how much I treasured her friendship, and how cruel my actions were. Needing to think about what I had just done, I got off the phone.
I soon called Michelle back and told her the truth and I was deeply sorry that I ever decided to betray (背叛) her. I was sorry for not being there for her in the last few months, and I was sorry for letting my friends pressure me into situations like these. I wanted to be her best friend again.
