A Harvard nutritionist shares 4 brain foods that will help your kids stay
“sharp and focused“.
Home-made hummus
Beans are healthy, plant-based sources of iron, zinc, protein, omega-3s and fiber, benefiting brain development. Home-made hummus is a good way to include beans into your child's diet. It can be served in so many ways, such as a dip paired with apple slices, carrot sticks or sugar snap peas. Adding some color to your hummus can make it more attractive to kids. Think: a bright orange carrot hummus topped with a monster face made out of vegetables.
Salmon
Introducing your child to fish at a young age can increase their likelihood of enjoying it and eating low-fat, vitamin-rich proteins for the rest of their life. Salmon is soft and mild enough for young children, and is also a good source of vitamin B12 and omega-3s, which promotes healthy brain development and happier moods.
Eggs
Whole eggs are an excellent source of brain-boosting vitamins A, D and B12, along with choline (胆碱). Choline is especially important for young children, as it has been shown to improve brain development and long-term memory. One study found that pastured eggs can have twice as much vitamin E and almost three times as many omega-3s as caged eggs.
Meatballs
Add some powerful plant-based fiber and nutritious vegetables to your child's diet through meatballs. Start with a base of beans or ground turkey. Then add grated celery and flax seeds full of omega-3s. Of course, don't forget your favorite spices. Cook and serve.
21. Which food can enhance brain development and happier moods?
A. Home-made hummus. B. Salmon.
C. Eggs. D. Meatballs.
22. What do these four foods have in common?
A. They all have plant fibers.
B. They all have low fat.
C. They all have vitamin B 12.
D. They all have omega-3s.
23. Who is this passage targeted at?
A. Those who want to lose weight.
B. Those who desire to put on weight.
C. Those who intend their kids to be more focused.
D. Those who expect their students to be more hard-working.
B
It may sound like the plot of a Disney movie, but Todd, a fox, really does think he’s a dog. The animal was tamed after being rescued as a 4-month-old baby and was raised as a pet by owner Emma D’ Sylva. Since then the lovable fox has picked up a number of dog characteristics such as tail wagging (摇尾巴), playing with toys and even walking on a lead.
The 11-month-old animal accompanies Emma’s pets Sky and Oakley on walks, drawing double attention from other dog-walkers when they see Todd moving quickly through the local park with Sky and Oakley. They thought as a fox, he has too many dog characteristics. He also sleeps and plays with the other dogs and even wags his tail during its feeding time.
“I’ve had Todd since he was about 4 months old because his previous owners couldn’t look after him anymore. He was a bit crazy when he first came to me last year, but now he has a really strong bond with me. He will run up to me wagging his tail when I go to feed him. “Emma, 25, from Stanfield, said.
“Sometimes he comes into my room, but he prefers being outside. He gets on well with my two dogs, and wants to play with them all the time. If people or dogs come up to him in the park, he will lie down at first and freeze but after a few seconds he will sniff around the dogs or sit patiently.”
Emma takes some of her 40 pets into schools and care homes to enable children and the elderly to interact with a range of animals. Emma’s husband, Steve Johnson, added, “Todd went out on his first school visit the other week and the children really enjoyed playing with him.”
24. The author mentions “like the plot of a Disney movie” in Paragraph 1 to ________.
A. attract readers to know more about Todd
B. introduce a Disney movie’s actor
C. inspire people to treat foxes more friendly
D. share his favorite movie with readers
25. Todd catches more attention than dogs because ________.
A. he’s considerate and warmhearted B. he’s successful and patient
C. he acts like a dog instead of a fox D. he gets along well with dogs
26. What can be inferred about Todd from Paragraph 3?
A. He is very aggressive in public.
B. He misses his previous owners.
C. He used to sleep in Emma’s room.
D. He leads a happy life at Emma’s home.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. How to raise dogs and foxes B. A lovely dog-like fox
C. Emma and her pets D. To be a good pet owner

Eating out seems to have been as popular 5,000 years ago as it is today, with archaeologists (考古学家) in Iraq uncovering an ancient tavern dating back to 2,700 BC. Researchers working in the ancient city of Lagash discovered that the pub, hidden just 19 inches below the surface, was split into an open-air dining area and a room containing benches, an oven, ancient food remains and even a 5,000-year-old “fridge”.
They initially found themselves in the open courtyard space, an area that was difficult to dig, being “open and exposed to the outdoors, “ according to Reed Goodman, an archaeologist from the University of Pennsylvania. After returning to the mysterious courtyard a few months later, field director Sara Pizzimenti from the University of Pisa, widened the trench(沟渠)instead of digging straight down vertically in one spot.
The team then discovered the industrial-sized oven, an ancient “fridge” to keep food cool, and dozens of bowls, many containing fish remains, revealing the purpose of the courtyard to be an outdoor dining area.
Previous digs focused on religious architecture and understanding the elites(上层人士), but Holly Pittman, director of the Lagash Archaeological Project and curator of the Penn Museums Near East section, concentrated on non-elite areas during these latest digs to make people have a broader understanding of ancient cities. “Uncovering the tavern supports the perspective of Pittman and her team that society was not organized into just elites and enslaved people — the previous common view — but included an ancient middle class,“ Goodman said.
The discovery provides insight into how people lived in this ancient city-state. It shows that even thousands of years ago, people enjoyed gathering in public places to socialize and enjoy food and drink.
28. What does the underlined word “tavern” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. City. B. Pub. C. Bench. D. Container.
29. How did Sara Pizzimenti conduct further digging?
A. By broadening the trench in the courtyard.
B. By digging straight down vertically in one spot.
C. By making a hole in the middle of the outdoor space.
D. By splitting the open-air dining area into different parts.
30. What is special about the latest digging project?
A. It reveals the earliest settlers in Lagash.
B. It shows the social activities of the elites.
C. It reflects the life of the ancient non-elite class.
D. It focuses on studying religious architecture.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To share a travel experience.
B. To analyze a historical event.
C. To show the wisdom of ancient people.
D. To introduce an archaeological discovery.
D
Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. But researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found a new use for bricks: as energy storage units. A team of engineers and chemists have found a way to transform an ordinary house brick into a pseudo(伪) battery — allowing it to conduct and store electricity. The bricks are powerful enough to light an LED light bulb and cost only about $3 to make.
“I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted,” said Julio D’Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project.
The brick battery relies on the red pigment(色素) known as iron oxide, or rust, that gives red bricks their color. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.
“What we’re trying to do is: we’re trying to make specialized plastics that are only used on the nano(纳米) scale — where we use very little of the plastic, and we can actually insert that plastic inside construction materials.” The study is in the journal Nature Communications.
In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.
The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low — about 1 percent of a lithium(锂) battery. But the team is now testing ways to improve brick performance — because it looks like you can teach an old brick new tricks.
32. What attracts Julio D’Arcy to list bricks as their subjects?
A. Their additional value.
B. Their common existence.
C. Their low expense.
D. Their internal composition.
33. What is the last process enabling bricks to conduct electricity?
A. Pump the brick with gases.
B. Color the brick red.
C. Produce microscopic fibers.
D. Cover its inner empty space with microscopic fibers.
34. What will the future bricks be like according to the passage?
A. Construction materials possessing low energy storage capacity.
B. Construction materials generating renewable energy resources.
C. Construction materials used for electricity storage.
D. Construction materials with built-in common plastic.
35. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the technology?
A. Favourable. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.
