My son’s seventh birthday is approaching, so conversation at my house has naturally turned to organizing his party.
For his sixth birthday, we booked the local trampoline(蹦床) park. This worked out well. But the whole event cost us hundreds of pounds. This year, I’m trying to convince him that the dinosaur-themed park down the road offers just as much fun—and you don’t even need to wear special socks! This will be cheaper, because we aren’t required to hire a space—we can simply buy tickets for his mates.
But I still keep pondering over one thing—party bags. Why should a bunch of seven-year-olds, who have already been treated to a day out and a mountain of sugar, also be handed a bag full of pound-shop gifts for simply bothering to show up?
Party bags are an environmental disaster. I reckon my son attends 20 parties per year, and at each party there are 20 kids in attendance, which means 400 plastic bags in total. Within these 400 bags are perhaps 800 plastic toys, almost all of which fall apart on the journey home and then get binned instantly. The waste is shocking, and I don’t want to be part of it.
I know there are some party bag alternatives: one couple I know covered a table with Mr. Men books and got the kids to choose one each. At another party, I saw the hosts fill a bucket with soft toys and crumpled newspaper, and do a lucky dip (抽奖). Admirable efforts.
Even if that is a nice try, and even if the contents in the party bags don’t fall apart, so what? Will our guests think more highly of our child because of the party bags from our party? Will my child’s ability to make and keep friends be improved?
Well, the tradition for kid’s party bags ends with me, and it ends here, and it ends now. Who’s with me?
24.Why does the author recommend the dinosaur-themed park?
A.Because it’s more enjoyable. B.Because it provides socks.
C.Because it can reduce cost. D.Because it offers free tickets.
25.What may be put in party bags?
A.Gifts brought by guests. B.Gifts prepared by hosts.
C.Gifts distributed by parks. D.Gift a donated by charities.
26.What is the author’s attitude towards party bags?
A.Intolerant. B.Objective. C.Favorable. D.In different.
27.What do the underlined words “get binned” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Be recycled. B.Be repaired. C.Be thrown away. D.Be given away.

In 2000, famed evolutionary theorist Stephen Jay Gould said,“There's been no biological change in humans in 40,000 or 50,000 years. We’ve built everything we call culture and civilization with the same body and brain.” Now, 22 years later, most evolutionary biologists beg to differ. Natural selection is still operating on humans, they say---and they have evidence to back up the claim.
Sarah Tishkoff, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Pennsylvania, cites an example of natural selection still going on today. Some people have a genetic variant that protects them from malaria(疟疾), which infects and kills millions of people every day. These people will be more likely to live and pass on that variant to their children.
Scientists have been able to discover many examples of ongoing natural selection thanks to a technology: the ability to sequence(测定序列)the human genome quickly and inexpensively. But not all the tools that uncover such evidence are so high tech. Church records that list births, marriages, and deaths offer a unique window into evolution on a population.
Scott Solomon, an evolutionary biologist at Rice University, dug into this type of data and found that natural selection favors an earlier start to reproduction---in other words, more time to have children. The more children, the more chances are for evolution.
There’s another important actor in this evolutionary play: culture. When people move from one population to another, they take their genes with them, and that changes the genes in both the populations they leave and the ones they join. “That is actually one of the most important systems for modern human evolution,” Scott says. “In the last couple of hundred years, and certainly in the last century, human populations have been mixing like never before.”
28. Why does the author mention genetic variant in the second paragraph?
A. To explain a biological phenomenon.
B. To prove an evolutionary theory.
C. To stress the seriousness of malaria.
D. To highlight efforts by scientists.
29. What may contribute to the discovery of ongoing natural selection?
A. Rapid genetic changes. B. Increasing research budget.
C. Birth records from the government. D. Advancement in technology.
30. What can we infer from Scott Solomon's study?
A. Church records show a trend of early reproduction.
B. Population movement has reached the peak.
C. More children will benefit the whole society.
D. Culture influences evolution greater than technology.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To present a new point of view. B. To argue against natural selection.
C. To defend Stephen Jay Gould. D. To explore a new method.
D
People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps , which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient rich fruit and nutrient poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.
Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health and wellbeing, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental lapses, which in turn reduces psychological health.”
“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental wellbeing. Conversely, it is also possible that the forthcoming restriction of processed snacks at checkouts, due to come in this October, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”
“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”
32. Which may lead to greater level of anxiety?
A. Vegetables. B. Fruit C. Savoury snacks. D. Grain.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. There is a relation between the nutrient poor snacks and mental health.
B. The more fruit people eat, the lower they scored for depression.
C. Rich fruit appear not to be linked to psychological health.
D. There was a direct link between eating vegetables and psychological health.
34. What does the underlined word “causality” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The relation between fruit and vegetables.
B. The close relation between exercise and health.
C. The relation between snacks and mental health.
D. The relation between diet and mental health and wellbeing.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Eating habits can prevent disease
B. Eating unhealthy snacks often is harmful to health
C. Eating vegetables often can improve mental health
D. Eating fruit often may contribute to positive mental wellbeing

If you really don't want anyone to know, but still feel the need to talk about the issue and get help, there are hot lines in your area that you can call. Until a few years ago, I was a calm person. If you were going to offend me or verbally 41 me, I almost never lost temper 42 ; of course I felt hurt, but I didn’t show it.
Then, one day, I met my husband and I fell in love with him, a proud 43 who loudly discusses things even with himself when he’s not happy. Things, however, got worse for me when we started 44 on things. He seemed really angry while I seemed polite. Truth is that I was
45 too, but I was used to not showing it on the outside. Fight after fight, he always acted as if nothing had happened a few minutes after each quarrel, while my moments of 46 discontent started to expand until they became hours, sometimes even days.
I felt this had to change and the conversation went 47 like this:
Me: “Either you change your 48 when we fight or I will start avoiding any discussion, otherwise this will 49 our relationship.”
Him: “Did you 50 the Mpemba Effect? If you put two 51 containers filled with the same amount of the same water into the freezer except that one has boiling water in it while the other one has water at ambient (周围的) 52 , the boiling water will 53 faster than the ambient water. Baby, you got to boil first, to cool down faster. That’s why the Italians live longer than Canadians.”
The connection he suggested is to be 54 , but I have learned a fact I didn’t know, one that has inspired me to understand that if I’m angry about something or someone, for that anger to disappear, it has to be towards the outside or otherwise it is like hiding 55 under the carpet: your house might look clean, but it is not.

第二节(满分25分)

续写的词数应为150左右。
Aram and Rossi’s Bakery
Walking along the narrow brick sidewalk, Aram took a deep breath. The air smelled of lemons and baked bread and coffee, coming from Rossi’s Italian Bakery. He was almost there.
Aram still couldn’t believe his luck. All his friends were working boring summer jobs — waiting tables and babysitting. And here he was about to start as an actual baker’s assistant, doing what he loved. It was all thanks to his Aunt Rita. She knew Mrs. Rossi and had arranged everything. It would be a perfect experience for his future career. Rossi’s Bakery, he was sure, would one day be known as the place where he got his start.
Ah, here he was — the bakery. A faded wooden sign over the door read “Rossi’s Bakery”. Aram straightened his shoulders and entered. Mrs. Rossi was sitting at the counter: looking old and wise. Aram greeted her and stuck out his hand. Mrs. Rossi looked at it for a second before turning around and waving him inside. “I’m ready to learn everything,” Aram said.
“Great. Let’s start with the cash register (收银机),” Mrs. Rossi said, “because that’s what you’ll be doing.” She showed him how to use the cash register. It wasn’t hard. The cakes and bread were all marked by price, and there weren’t that many choices anyway. “That’s it?” Aram said, his heart sinking! “But when do we bake?”
“Bake? I order wholesale (批量购买) now. No more baking. I’m too old.” Then Mrs. Rossi silently held up her hands. Aram saw her swollen (肿胀的) fingers, and he understood. A wave of disappointment struck him. Sadness washed over him so suddenly that he couldn’t think of a word to say.
He sighed, and Mrs. Rossi sighed, too. “I used to bake it all. Bread and cakes. And no one did it better than me. But that was when these things worked,” said Mrs. Rossi holding up her hands once more and glancing across the shelves filled with empty bottles labeled with names of the various ingredients(配料) she once used. Suddenly she came alive, waving her arthritic (关节炎的) hands. “People used to line up around the corner. Everyone wanted my baked bread.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then a thought occurred to Aram that he could ask Mrs. Rossi to teach him.

Then a thought occurred to Aram that he could ask Mrs. Rossi to teach him. Hesitating for a while, he plucked up his courage to speak to Mrs. Rossi, “Mrs. Rossi, I’m not here to be a cashier. I am here to learn to be a baker. Could you please teach me?” Raising her eyebrows in surprise, Mrs. Rossi froze, as if rooted on the ground. Scratching her knotted, swollen fingers, she sighed, “I am too old to do this now. Look at my hands!” “But I can be your hands!” Aram replied with a trembling but determined voice. Moved by his words, Mrs. Rossi nodded her head slowly.
Mrs. Rossi finally said, “Let’s buy the ingredients first.” Aram jumped up in happiness, with his eyes sparkling like shining stars. With all the ingredients prepared, Mrs. Rossi taught Aram how to make a cake step by step. When the cake was taken out of the oven, the shop was flooded with the sweet fragrance. Aram said, “Mrs. Rossi, thank you for teaching me how to make a cake.” Mrs. Rossi said, “It is you who teach me how to stick to my dream.”

W: I recommend it. China is a great country.
Text 10
More and more people today are going back to school as older adults. Why are people doing this? The main reason is that they aren’t satisfied with their present careers. Maybe they are tired of their busy, stressful life in business and want to be a teacher — a job that helps others. Maybe they want to make more money. Or maybe they want to try something new.
